Chapter 2

I did not sleep.

I did not need to.

By four in the morning I was at the desk in the archive, laptop open, the pack's training rosters pulled up on one screen and the Luna's authority protocols on the other. I worked the way I always worked—slowly, without hurry, with the kind of attention that leaves no seams for a lawyer to pry open later.

The Gamma-track combat program had eight open slots this cycle. Senior she-wolves qualified by combat record, tenure, and a written recommendation from a ranking warrior. There were exactly nine eligible candidates in Nighthollow. I knew every one of them by name, by shift weight, by the way they held a blade in the training yard.

Everlee was not among them.

She had no combat record. She had no tenure that counted. She had a Finn-signed internship placement and a scent that had begun to appear on his collar, and neither of those things was a qualification under pack law.

I drafted the reassignment order in the formal register. Luna's seal. Date. Line-item enrollment for each of the eight qualified she-wolves, plus a ninth provisional slot for Elena, whose record was strong enough to justify expanding the cohort by one. I signed the document at 6:47 a.m., printed two copies, and walked down to the pack house board myself.

The corridor was empty. The board was a wide slab of oak just outside the dining hall, the place every wolf checked before breakfast out of pure habit. I pinned the order in the center, at eye level, where no one could miss it.

I stood back and looked at it for a moment.

Everlee's name was not on the list. That was the whole point. Not a rebuke. Not a callout. Just an absence, placed in public, in pack-law language, where any wolf could count nine names and know exactly which one had never earned a place on that page.

I went to breakfast.

I took my usual seat at the Luna's end of the long table and ate slowly. Toast. Black coffee. I watched the room fill in the mirror over the sideboard.

Elena came in at seven-fifteen. She stopped at the board. I saw her back go still. She read it once. She read it again. Then she walked into the dining hall without a word, poured her coffee, and passed behind my chair on her way to the warriors' table.

She dipped her chin.

Not a bow. Not quite. Something older and quieter than a bow. The gesture a senior warrior gives to a commander she has decided to follow into terrain she cannot yet see.

I did not look up. I did not need to. I heard it in the air.

By nine, the whole pack had read the board.

By nine-thirty, I could feel Everlee's absence from the dining hall like a held breath. She had not come down. Someone had told her.

At ten-oh-four, Finn slammed open the door to the Luna's quarters.

I was already in my chair by the window, notebook open on my knee, waiting. I had known he would come. I had known within what half-hour he would come. Eight years of a mate bond teaches you the rhythm of a man's temper the way a fisherman learns tide.

He did not knock. He never had.

"Meredith."

I did not stand. I closed the notebook over one finger to hold my place and looked up at him.

He was already breathing hard. His hair was uncombed. His shirt was buttoned wrong at the collar, which told me Everlee had been in the room with him when she'd found out—had run to him crying, half-dressed, and he had come straight here without thinking about what the misbuttoned shirt would say to me.

It said everything. I filed it away.

"You want to explain what you just did?" His voice was low and grinding. The Alpha tone was there but held back, coiled. He knew, on some animal level, that using it in this room right now would not go the way it had gone in the ceremony hall. "You cut her out. In front of the whole pack. On the board."

"I enrolled the qualified candidates."

"You know what you did."

"I know what I did."

He took a step closer. His hand cut through the air. "This is petty. This is you being jealous over a girl who has done nothing—nothing—but her job. She came from nothing, Meredith. She's an omega background, she's finally getting a chance, and you're using your authority to—to—" He was searching for the word. He was not going to find it. "You're weaponizing your position against her. Do you understand how that looks? You are making me look like a fool."

I let the silence sit until he'd heard the shape of what he'd just said.

Then I asked him, in the voice I use when I want a room to go very quiet, two registers below my normal speaking tone:

"Do you intend to formally override a Luna's training authority in writing, before witnesses, on the pack record?"

The room changed temperature.

He stared at me. His jaw worked. His hand was still half-raised from the gesture he had not finished.

I waited.

I can wait a long time.

He did not answer. He turned and walked out and slammed the door so hard the frame rattled and a pen rolled off the desk and hit the floor with a small definite sound.

I opened the notebook.

I wrote the date. The time: 10:11 a.m. I wrote his accusations in his own words, phrased as directly as I could reconstruct them. Petty. Jealous. Weaponizing. Making him look like a fool.

I numbered the entry.

Four.

The fourth this month.

I closed the notebook and set it on the desk beside the pen I had picked back up, and I sat for a moment with my hand flat on the cover, and I felt the door in my chest press once against its frame and then go still, waiting.
