Chapter 2

By morning, I'd written six pages.

The words came out clean and flat, like a field report. Rogue breach at 23:47, eastern perimeter. Fifteen hostiles, coordinated entry through gap at marker seventy-three. Mind-link to Alpha Damien Walker severed at 23:52. Retired Alpha Marvin Walker struck by silver-tipped arrow at 23:47, shielding Luna from archer positioned northwest of tree line. Alpha Damien Walker located at Silverpine Resort, three territories east, 06:15. Confrontation resulted in physical strike and Alpha-tone command to kneel. Witness: Tiffany Porter. Minor present: unidentified male child, approximately six years old, wearing Walker pack colors.

Retired Alpha Marvin Walker pronounced dead at 14:22 from silver poisoning.

I dated each page. Noted coordinates. Recorded exact phrases where I could remember them. My handwriting stayed level across all six pages. My wolf pressed against something inside my chest the entire time, but I kept writing.

When I finished, I closed the journal and sealed it with wax. Then I started organizing Marvin's Tribute Ceremony, because no one else would.

The ceremonial elders answered my calls within the hour. I coordinated with Elena on the infirmary's formal death report. I pulled the border rotation schedules Damien had left half-finished and reassigned the gaps myself. The eastern perimeter needed six wolves minimum. I put eight.

The pack watched me work. They always watched me work. But this time I felt their eyes differently—on the bruise darkening across my cheekbone, on the way I moved through the pack house like I'd been doing this alone for years.

Because I had been.

I passed Mabel in the main hall. Marvin's mate. Damien's mother. She looked at me for a long moment, her face carved from something harder than grief. She didn't say anything. Neither did I. But when I handed her the ceremony schedule, she took it without questioning a single line.

I worked until my hands stopped shaking. Then I worked longer.

Elena found me in the archives room just after noon. I was pulling the formal pack lineage records—Marvin's bloodline went back four generations of Ironridge Alphas, and the tribute required documentation. She closed the door behind her. Locked it.

That got my attention.

"I need to show you something," she said.

She didn't sit. She pulled a folded paper from her healer's bag and slid it across the table between us. Her hands were steady. Her face was not.

I unfolded it.

Blood-scent analysis. Formal lab certification. Subject: male child, approximately six years old, scent sample collected during routine pack health screening four months prior.

Conclusion: Zero Walker wolf lineage detected. Paternal genetic markers consistent with human DNA profile. No werewolf lineage present.

I read it twice. The words didn't change.

"The boy isn't Damien's," Elena said quietly. "He's human-born. I ran the analysis three times to be sure."

I looked up at her. "Why now?"

"Because Marvin's dead." Her voice stayed level, but something underneath it cracked. "And I watched you fight beside him while Damien was three territories away with a woman and a child he's been calling his heir for months. I'm a healer. I'm supposed to stay neutral. But I can't—" She stopped. Started again. "I collected that sample during a standard screening. I didn't plan to test it. But something felt wrong. The boy's scent. The way Tiffany watched me the entire time, like she was waiting for me to notice something."

"Did Damien ask you to verify the lineage?"

"No." Elena's mouth tightened. "He never asked. He just accepted it."

I folded the paper precisely along its creases. My wolf stirred—not the dull, restless thing I'd known. Something sharper. Colder.

"Can you present this evidence?" I asked. "Formally. At the Tribute Ceremony."

Elena didn't hesitate. "Yes."

"Keep it confidential until then."

"Understood." She paused at the door. "Reese—he hit you. In front of witnesses. Used Alpha tone through the mate bond."

"I know."

"That's not—" She stopped herself. "You deserve better than this."

I didn't answer. She left.

I sat alone in the archives room with the lineage records and the blood-scent analysis. The bruise on my face throbbed in time with my pulse. My wolf pressed against its cage again—that grinding, cracking pressure that had been building since Marvin died.

Something was breaking open. I still didn't know what.

But I was starting to want to find out.

I found Jonah on the eastern border at dusk.

He was standing near the fence post I'd repaired three years ago—the one Damien kept saying he'd assign a crew to fix, right up until I did it myself with zip ties and scrap wire. The repair had held. The rest of the fence looked worse.

Jonah saw me coming. He didn't run. Didn't speak. Just stood there with his shoulders tight and his hands empty.

I stopped six feet away. Waited.

"I blocked your messages," he said finally. His voice was flat. "During the siege. Damien commanded me—Alpha tone, direct order through the link. I had no choice. A Beta can't refuse Alpha tone. It's biological."

I said nothing.

"You sent four emergency links," Jonah continued. He was looking at the fence post, not at me. "The first one at 23:52. Reinforcements needed, southern flank. The second at 00:03. Marvin's injured, silver poisoning. The third at 00:17. The fourth—" His voice cracked. "The fourth was at 00:34. Marvin was already in the infirmary. You were asking where the Alpha was."

He finally looked at me. His eyes were hollow.

"I blocked all of them," he said. "Every single one. Because Damien told me to, and I couldn't—" He stopped. "I had no choice. But that doesn't make it right."

The wind moved through the trees. Buster sat beside me, silent.

"Will you say this before the pack?" I asked.

Jonah didn't hesitate. "Yes."

I nodded once. Then I walked to the broken fence post beside the one I'd repaired years ago and crouched down to examine the base. The wood was rotted through. It needed replacing.

I heard Jonah move behind me. He picked up the other end of the post without being asked and held it steady while I worked the damaged section free.

We didn't speak again. We didn't need to.

The fence held.
