Chapter 3

Mabel didn't knock.

She walked into my quarters two days after Marvin's death, moving through the door like she still owned every room in this pack house. Maybe she did. I was at the desk, cross-referencing patrol schedules with the ceremony timeline. The bruise on my cheek had darkened to purple-black. I didn't bother covering it.

She stopped three feet from the desk. Her face looked carved from stone—grief compressed into something harder, colder. She'd always been a woman who chose her words carefully. Now she wasn't using any at all.

I set down my pen. Waited.

Mabel's gaze moved to the bruise. Stayed there. Her jaw tightened.

Then she reached across the desk and took both my hands in hers. Her grip was warm. Steady. The kind of touch that said more than condolence ever could.

"You were the one who was there," she said quietly.

That was all. Four words. She held my hands for another moment, then released them and left without looking back.

I sat in the silence she left behind. My wolf stirred—that grinding, cracking pressure I'd been feeling since the woods. It pushed against something deep in my chest, and for the first time, I didn't try to force it down.

I understood what Mabel had just told me. Not condolence. A decision.

I went back to the schedules. The ceremony was in three days.

The Lycan court's message arrived the next morning.

I was in the archives room when Elena brought it—a formal scroll sealed with red wax and the Thornewood crest. She set it on the table between us like it might explode.

"This came through official channels," she said. "Lycan King Alaric Thornewood will attend the Tribute Ceremony in person."

I stared at the scroll. Lycan Kings didn't attend pack ceremonies. Ever. They sent representatives if the pack was important enough. They sent condolences if they were feeling generous. They did not travel three territories to honor a retired Alpha most of them had never met.

"Why?" I asked.

Elena shook her head. "The message doesn't say. Just that he'll arrive the morning of the ceremony with a small escort."

I broke the seal and unrolled the scroll. The language was formal, precise, and revealed exactly nothing about motive. At the bottom, beneath the King's signature, was a single handwritten line: *I have been following certain intelligence reports with interest.*

My wolf pressed harder. That cracking pressure spread through my ribs like fault lines.

"What does that mean?" Elena asked.

"I don't know."

But something in my chest knew. Something that had been caged and restless for ten years suddenly went very, very still.

I rolled the scroll back up. "Prepare for royal attendance. Adjust the seating. Notify the ceremonial elders."

Elena nodded and left.

I sat alone with the scroll and the pressure in my chest. My wolf wasn't restless anymore. It was waiting.

Damien came back on the third day.

I heard him before I saw him—his voice carrying through the pack house main hall, loud and commanding. Alpha tone threaded through every word, making the younger wolves flinch. I was in Marvin's study, finalizing the last of the ceremony documentation.

I walked to the hall.

Damien stood near the entrance with Tiffany on his arm. She wore a dress the color of fresh blood. Her hand rested in the crook of his elbow like it belonged there. Behind them, the boy—still in Walker colors—clung to Tiffany's skirt.

Damien saw me and smiled. Not warmth. Satisfaction.

"There you are," he said. He pulled a folded document from his jacket. "I need you to sign this. Formal rejection. You'll vacate the Luna quarters by tonight. Tiffany will be moving in."

I looked at the document. Didn't take it.

"The Tribute Ceremony is tomorrow," I said.

"I'm aware." Damien's smile thinned. "Some border patrol thing, right? We'll get through it, then handle the transition. Sign the document, Reese. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

Tiffany's mouth curved. That same small, mean smile from the clearing.

Behind me, I heard footsteps. Mabel emerged from the corridor, moving with the slow, deliberate grace of a woman who had made a decision and would not be turned from it. She looked at Damien. At Tiffany. At the boy.

Her face stayed carved from stone.

"The ceremony," she said quietly, "is for your father."

Damien blinked. The smile faltered. "What?"

"Marvin," Mabel said. Each word fell like a hammer. "Your father. Who died three days ago from silver poisoning. While you were at Silverpine Resort."

The hall went silent.

Damien's face drained of color. He looked at me. At Mabel. At the pack members gathering in the doorway behind us.

"He—" Damien's voice cracked. "When?"

"Three days ago," I said. My voice stayed level. "I sent you four emergency links during the siege. You severed the bond."

Tiffany's hand slipped from Damien's arm.

Damien stared at me like I'd struck him. "You're lying."

"Elena can confirm the time of death," I said. "Jonah can confirm the severed links. The eastern border patrol can confirm the breach. Your father's body is in the ceremonial hall. You're welcome to see him."

Damien didn't move. His mouth opened. Closed. His Alpha aura flickered—just for a second, but everyone saw it.

Mabel turned and walked back down the corridor without another word.

I looked at Damien one last time. At Tiffany. At the boy who wasn't his.

Then I walked past them toward the ceremonial hall. Buster followed.

Behind me, I heard Tiffany whisper something. Damien didn't answer.

The ceremony was tomorrow. The Lycan King was coming. And my wolf—caged, restless, cracking open—was finally done waiting.
