Chapter 1

The arrow hit Marvin at 11:47 p.m., and I watched the silver tip punch through his chest before I could scream his name.

I'd been at the eastern perimeter for three hours already. The patrol anomalies I'd charted three days ago—scent markers moved six inches west, broken branches at wolf-shoulder height where no branches should break—had finally resolved into what I knew they would: a coordinated breach. Rogues, at least fifteen, pouring through the gap in our defenses like water through cracked stone.

I'd warned Damien. He'd looked at my field journal for exactly four seconds before handing it back. "You're seeing patterns that aren't there," he'd said. "The border's fine."

The border was not fine.

Marvin fought beside me because he was the only wolf who'd listened when I ran to the main hall shouting. He was seventy-three and retired, but his wolf moved like it remembered every campaign he'd ever fought. We held the pack house entrance together—me directing the scattered warriors into flanking positions, him covering the door with his body. I slammed a mind-link to Damien so hard it should have made his skull ring. *Reinforcements on the southern flank. Ten minutes and we cut them off.*

The link hit silence.

Not the fuzzy static of distance. Not the hum of a closed connection. Silence. The kind that only happens when someone severs the bond deliberately, like hanging up a phone mid-sentence.

I pushed harder. Screamed through it. *Your father is fighting. The pack house is breached. WHERE ARE YOU.*

Nothing.

Then the archer stepped out from the tree line, and Marvin saw the drawn bow before I did. He shoved me sideways. The arrow meant for my throat took him in the chest instead.

I caught him before he hit the frozen ground. The silver tip glowed faintly in the moonlight, already sinking into the wound. My hands pressed over it—warm blood, too much of it, soaking through his shirt and between my fingers. "Elena!" I screamed at the nearest warrior. "Get the healer NOW."

Marvin's hand closed over mine. His grip was still strong. "The flank," he rasped.

"I know." I repositioned two warriors with a series of hand signals—no time for links, no breath for words. They moved. The rogues broke and ran. We'd won, but it didn't feel like winning.

I dragged Marvin inside. His weight was heavier than it should have been, like the silver was already pulling him down. Elena met me in the main hall, her healer's bag already open. She took one look at the wound and her face went still in the way that meant bad news delivered quietly.

"The silver's in his blood," she said. "I can slow it. I can't stop it."

"Try."

She tried.

I stayed in the infirmary while she worked. Marvin's breathing went shallow, then steadier, then shallow again. My mind-link to Damien stayed silent. I tested it every ten minutes like pressing on a bruise. Still severed. Still nothing.

My wolf slammed against the inside of my chest.

It wasn't the dull, restless creature I'd known for ten years. It was something else—something that hit the walls of its cage with enough force to make me gasp out loud. The pressure built behind my ribs like a scream with no mouth. I forced it down. Forced my breathing steady. I had a pack to hold together, and falling apart in the infirmary wouldn't help Marvin.

But the wolf kept pressing. And pressing. And pressing.

At dawn, with Marvin stable but fading, I left Elena to monitor him and walked out of the pack house. I knew where Damien was. I'd known for months, actually—I just hadn't let myself finish the thought. But I knew his patterns the way I knew patrol routes. I knew which territories he crossed when he wanted privacy. I knew where the Silverpine Resort sat, three territories east, far enough that no Ironridge wolf would accidentally scent him there.

It took me four hours on foot. Buster followed without being asked.

I found Damien outside a private cabin. Tiffany Porter stood beside him, her hand tucked into the crook of his arm like she belonged there. A boy—maybe six years old, wearing Walker pack colors—played at their feet with a carved wooden wolf.

The scene looked domestic. Comfortable. Like they'd done this a hundred times before.

I stepped into the clearing. "Your father is dying."

Damien turned. He didn't flinch. Didn't drop Tiffany's hand. He squared his shoulders and lifted his chin—that same posture I'd seen a thousand times before he delivered a public humiliation, the one that meant he'd already decided how this would go.

"The pack was breached," I said. My voice stayed level. "Fifteen rogues on the eastern border. I called for you. Where were you."

"Here," Damien said. He said it like it was obvious. Like I was stupid for asking.

Tiffany's mouth curved. Not quite a smile. Something smaller and meaner.

My wolf threw itself against its cage so hard I felt something crack in my chest. Not the bond. Something deeper. Something that had been holding for too long.

"Your father took an arrow meant for me," I said. "He's in the infirmary with silver poisoning. Elena says—"

Damien's hand moved faster than I could track. He shifted—partial, claws extending—and struck me across the face. The blow snapped my head sideways. I tasted blood.

Then his voice dropped into Alpha tone. It came through the mate bond like a chain pulled tight. "Kneel."

My body obeyed before my mind could fight it. My knees hit the frozen ground. The bond was a fist around my spine, forcing me down, holding me there. I couldn't move. Couldn't stand. My wolf screamed inside its cage, but the cage held.

Tiffany looked down at me. The smile bloomed fully now.

"You're a barren, jealous omega," Damien said. His voice was loud enough for the boy to hear. Loud enough for anyone in the cabin to hear. "You're unfit to be Luna. This is my son. My heir. And you're going to crawl back to Ironridge, stay in your quarters, and sign whatever I put in front of you."

I didn't beg. I didn't explain. I met Tiffany's eyes and said nothing.

The Alpha tone released. My body was mine again.

I stood. Turned. Walked back toward Ironridge without a word.

Behind me, I heard Tiffany laugh.

My wolf pressed against its cage for four hours straight. By the time I reached the pack house, the pressure had become a sound—low, constant, like stone grinding against stone. Something was breaking open. I didn't know what yet.

Marvin died three hours after I returned. I was beside him. Damien was not.

His last words were, "Is the eastern border holding?"

"Yes," I said.

He nodded. His hand went still in mine.

I walked into the woods behind the pack house. Buster followed. I stood in the dark and felt the crack in my chest split wider—my wolf surging with a force that no longer felt like distress.

It felt like something waking up.

I pulled out my field journal. Opened to a fresh page. And began to write.
