After My Alpha Husband Declared Another Heir Chapter 1

The Heir's Blessing was set to begin at nine sharp, and at 9:04 my husband called a name that was not my daughter's.

"Zain Reynolds."

I was standing at the altar with the ceremonial chalice in both hands. Two hundred wolves filled the hall behind us, elders in gray sashes, warriors in Crescent Hollow black. Chloe stood at my right in the pale green dress we'd picked out together three weeks ago. She had practiced her walk for the altar. She had practiced it in the hallway at midnight, barefoot, laughing at herself.

She didn't move. Nobody moved.

Then, from the back of the hall, footsteps.

A boy came up the center aisle. Dark hair, maybe eleven, twelve. He wore Reynolds colors — the black and deep red, tailored, fitted to him like someone had measured him for it months ago. Someone had. That was the first thing my mind grabbed onto. Not the boy's face. The fit of the jacket.

Elijah put his hand on the boy's head.

The Blessing lit.

It doesn't look like much from the outside — a shimmer over the altar stone, a shift in the air. But every wolf in that hall smelled it. Blood-scent, rising, matching, locking. Alpha's firstborn. Confirmed.

Someone in the third row made a sound like they'd been punched.

The bond in my chest tore.

I want to be precise about this, because I have gone over it many times since. It was not a snap. It was a slow horizontal rip, starting under my collarbone and dragging sideways through the meat of me. The mark on my neck went cold first — actually cold, like a coin left out in November — and then went empty. A door closing on a room with nothing in it.

My knees loosened. I locked them.

Chloe's hand closed around my wrist. Small fingers. Very tight.

And underneath the tearing, deeper than the mark, something else moved. Something in me that had not moved in twenty-six years. No voice. Just pressure — a slow, heavy pulse, like a great animal shifting its weight in a dark place.

Elijah was talking. His voice filled the hall, warm and easy, the voice that had gotten him out of every room he'd ever needed out of. "The Moon Goddess's design is not always the design we expect. But it is the design. The pack's strength has always come first—"

I set the chalice down on the altar stone.

The small click of it cut him off mid-word.

I smoothed the front of my gown with both hands. Slowly. There was nothing to smooth. Then I looked at him.

I don't know what my face did. I know that Elder Nadia Holloway, who has stood at that altar through four Alphas, took a step back. So did the two elders beside her.

Elijah's hand went to the back of his neck.

I took my daughter's hand and I walked out. Down the center aisle, past two hundred faces, past the boy in the fitted jacket. I did not hurry. Chloe matched my pace exactly. Neither of us said one word.

Behind us the hall stayed silent all the way to the doors.

***

That night I went to my chambers alone.

Chloe was asleep down the hall. I'd sat with her until she stopped pretending to be asleep, and then until she actually was.

There's a cabinet in the east wall of my dressing room, small, cedar-lined. I've opened it every morning for ten years at a quarter past five.

I opened it now.

Wolfsbane, dried and ground fine, in the blue jar. Silver-nettle in the brown one. The bark I have to order from a woman in Vermont who thinks I'm making tinctures for arthritis. Ten years of measuring. Ten years of tasting the steam to check the balance, because if the ratio drifted the scent-mask would thin and every Alpha within three hundred miles would smell exactly how diluted my mate's blood really was.

He never asked how I learned to do it. He never asked what it cost to get the bark.

I laid my palm flat on the lids. Cool glass. My hand did not shake.

I closed the cabinet.

Inside my chest, that heavy thing shifted again. Not a word. A weight leaning against a door.

I sat down, took my journal out of my gown pocket — leather, soft at the corners, dried wildflowers pressed flat between pages going back to my mother's time — and I wrote the date.

Then: **Zain.**

Then: **Blood-scent confirmed. Alpha's firstborn.**

I underlined it twice.

The next morning I did not brew the tea.

Elijah came into the kitchen at ten past six. I was slicing a pear for Chloe's plate. Everything in that room was exactly as it had been every morning of our marriage.

Except the stove. The clay pot wasn't on it.

He stopped in the doorway. I watched him find the empty burner. I watched him decide how to handle it.

"Rosie." Warm. Soft. He came in and set his hand on the counter near mine, not touching. "You've forgotten the blend."

I kept slicing. "No."

"Then—"

I put down the knife and looked at him. He'd shaved. His collar was crisp. Under the soap, faint but there, a smell that was not mine and not his: something sweet, warm, worn into the fabric over days.

"I've decided," I said, "to let things be what they naturally are."

His shoulders came down an inch. Relief. He thought that was grief talking. He thought I'd gone soft and quiet the way beaten women do.

"That's — good." He touched the back of his neck. "That's wise, Rosie. It's better for everyone if we don't make this ugly."

"Yes," I said.

He left for the training grounds at seven. His wolf must have caught it by then — that first faint thinning, the scent going a half-shade sharper. I saw it in the way he paused at the door and sniffed his own sleeve, frowning, like a man checking for smoke.

He didn't know what he was smelling.

He would.

At 7:20 I logged into the pack's financial archive with my Luna credentials.

Elijah has never once looked at those ledgers. He hates numbers. He told me that on our second night together, laughing, charming, handing me a decade of rope.

It took me under two hours.

Suppressed allocations, quarterly, going back nine years. A supply vendor called Hartline Provisioning that received forty to sixty thousand dollars a year and has no tax registration anywhere in this state. Delivery address: a set of border coordinates forty miles northeast. Nowhere I have ever been. Nowhere anyone has ever mentioned to me.

I photographed every page. Then I printed the paper copies and pressed them flat into my journal, in among the wildflowers, one entry after another.

That's when she moved again — hard this time, a lurch up through my ribs, and with it a sound. Not words. Low, long, deliberate. A growl in a room where I was the only one breathing.

I put my hand over my sternum and held very still until it passed.

Then I opened a blank document and typed: *Preliminary Inquiry — Bloodline Fraud Division, Lycan Council.*

At the bottom, where the seal goes, I did not use the Crescent Hollow crest.

I used my own. Silvermoon. The one my mother put in my hands the day I left home, when she said, *keep this somewhere he can't reach.*

I hit print. The machine hummed and started to feed.

And out in the hallway, Dorothy's voice, pleasant as a bell: "Rosalie, dear girl — open the door. The elders and I have set the Harvest Moon circle for the fourteenth. There's paperwork we'll need from you."
