Chapter 4

The letter came three days after Stefan walked out of the mourning room.

It was formal, stamped with the Lycan Council's seal—a crescent moon over crossed claws—and delivered by courier to the neutral packhouse at dawn. The woman at the desk handed it to me without comment, her eyes flicking once to the open mark on my neck before looking away. I took it upstairs. Buster followed close, his shoulder brushing my calf every third step.

I sat on the floor and opened it slowly.

*Petition accepted. Tribunal convened. Presiding authority: Lycan Prince Dominic Ashford. Date: seven days hence. Location: Council Hall, North Territory. Charges: psychological manipulation of pack hierarchy, fraudulent mourning ritual, threat to pack stability as wolfless rejected mate with no legitimate standing.*

I read it twice. Then I set it on the windowsill beside the healer's documentation lens and pressed my palms to my knees.

Seven days.

Inside my chest, my wolf stirred—faint, so faint I had to hold my breath to feel her at all. A flicker. A warmth smaller than a candle. She had been quiet since the rejection, dormant in a way that felt less like sleep and more like waiting. Now she surfaced just enough to press one word into my ribs.

*Truth.*

I closed my eyes. Truth was all I had. No pack allies. No witnesses who could testify without risking Stefan's retaliation. Enoch was alive, but he was wolfless and Omega-ranked—his word carried no legal weight against an Alpha's formal petition. Sera had already risked too much by bringing me the candles. I would not ask her to stand in a Council chamber and be destroyed for my sake.

I had my memories. I had the photographs on the lens. I had the scent I had carried in my nose since childhood, the scent Stefan had never bothered to check.

It would have to be enough.

---

The note came two days later.

I found it slipped under the door when I returned from a walk with Buster. No envelope. No signature. Just a single folded sheet of paper, the handwriting small and careful.

*They are pressuring the Deltas. Marcus Veil, Tomas Harrow, Jenna Cross. All three will testify that you refused the mission voluntarily. That no Alpha-tone command was issued. That you were erratic, unstable. Heidi met with each of them separately. She cried. She told them you would destroy the pack if they didn't tell the Council what "really happened." Marcus agreed, but his hands were shaking when he left.*

*I cannot testify. I am sorry.*

*—S.*

I read it once. Twice. Three times. Then I folded it and set it on the table beside the tribunal letter.

Buster's head lifted. He watched me, his eyes dark and steady, the way he used to watch me in the healing ward when I worked through the night and forgot to eat. I reached down and ran my hand over his ears, feeling the warmth of his skull under my palm.

"They're going to lie," I said quietly. "All three of them. And the Council will hear their testimony before they hear mine."

Buster did not answer. He simply leaned into my hand, solid and warm and unmoved by the machinery of pack politics.

I sat on the floor beside him and let my head rest against the wall. Inside my chest, my wolf stirred again—not loudly, but with a warmth that surfaced like breath from deep water. She pressed a single sentence into my ribs, clearer than before.

*They cannot edit what the Council compels. Trust the truth.*

I opened my eyes. My wolf had been silent for so long that I had almost forgotten what her voice sounded like. Now she was speaking in full sentences, and the words carried a certainty I did not yet feel.

"What if the truth isn't enough?" I whispered.

She did not answer. But the warmth in my chest did not fade.

---

I spent the next four days preparing.

I reviewed the healer's documentation lens, memorizing every angle of the photographs. The silver coin at Alfredo's throat. The blackened chain. The specific way the metal had melted into what had been skin. I could not present the photographs as evidence—Stefan would claim I had fabricated them, and I had no pack authority to verify their authenticity. But I could hold them in my mind, and I could trust that the Council's compelled mind-link replay would show what I could not say aloud.

I practiced speaking in the flat, empty register I had learned over the years. No emotion. No performance. Just facts, delivered with the precision of a healer documenting a wound. *Stefan used Alpha-tone command through the mate bond to freeze me in place. Heidi touched the second wire. The hostage died. I scented the remains. The bloodline scent was Alfredo Cooper's.*

I said it aloud to Buster. I said it to the empty room. I said it until the words lost their weight and became simply sounds, clinical and cold.

On the sixth day, Enoch wheeled into my room without knocking.

He looked at me for a long moment, his hands resting calm on the armrests of his chair, his face composed with the dignity of a man who has already paid the highest price. Then he spoke, his voice quiet and final.

"You will survive this, Alana."

I looked at him. My throat tightened. "You don't know that."

"I do." He wheeled forward, just slightly, until he was close enough that I could scent the faint flicker of his dormant wolf—iron and patience and the specific warmth of a bloodline that had never stopped being exactly what it was. "Because the Moon Goddess does not make mistakes. And you are hers."

I closed my eyes. Inside my chest, my wolf stirred—faint, so faint, but there.

*Soon,* she whispered.

Enoch wheeled back toward the door. He paused at the threshold, his back to me.

"The Council cannot be lied to, Alana. Not when they compel the truth. Stefan has built his case on a foundation of arrogance. All you have to do is stand still and let it collapse."

He left before I could answer. The door clicked shut. Buster settled at my feet, his body warm and solid against my calf.

I opened my eyes and looked at the tribunal letter on the windowsill. Seven days had become one.

I stood slowly, my knees stiff, my hands steady. I picked up the healer's documentation lens and slid it into my inner pocket, next to the cold place where the mark used to be warm.

Tomorrow, I would walk into the Council Hall. Tomorrow, I would stand alone against an Alpha's testimony and three coerced Deltas and a chosen mate who had spent weeks weaponizing fragility.

Tomorrow, I would trust the one thing Stefan had never bothered to check.

The truth.
