Chapter 5

I did not rehearse a defense speech.

The night before the tribunal, I sat on the floor of the neutral packhouse room with the healer's documentation lens in my hand. I opened it once, looked at the photograph—the silver coin glinting at Alfredo's throat, the blackened chain melted into what had been skin—and closed it. I slid it back into my inner pocket and pressed my palm flat against the cold floorboards.

The Council's compelled replay would show what no photograph needed to caption. My memories were unalterable. Stefan's were not.

Buster lay pressed against my side, his body warm and solid, his breathing slow and even. I ran my hand over his ears and felt the specific comfort of a creature who could not be gaslit, could not be coerced, could not be instructed to perform a feeling he did not have. He had growled at Stefan in the mourning room. He had recognized something I was only beginning to name.

I touched the mark on my neck—the cold, hollow scar where Stefan's claim had been. I had not covered it. I would not. Let the Council see what a formal rejection looked like when it landed on living skin. Let them see the biological consequence of a bond severed before witnesses.

Inside my chest, my wolf stirred. Faint. So faint I had to hold my breath to feel her at all. But she was there, and she pressed one word into my ribs with the patience of something that had been waiting a very long time.

*Wait.*

I closed my eyes. I did not know what I was waiting for. I only knew that my wolf had never lied to me.

---

Sera appeared at dawn.

I heard the soft knock and opened the door to find her standing in the hallway with a healer's wrap in her hands—clean linen, folded tight, the kind we used to hold wound edges together when stitches were not enough. She looked at the mark on my neck, then at my face, and held out the wrap without speaking.

I took it. "Thank you."

"I'm not offering to cover it," she said quietly. "Just to keep the edges clean. You'll want it visible."

I nodded. She stepped back, her hands loose at her sides, and for a moment I thought she would leave without saying anything else. Then she stopped. Her eyes met mine, and her voice dropped to something I had never heard from her before—something that sounded like confession.

"Your wolf isn't gone, Alana." She paused. "I've never been able to name what it is, but it isn't gone."

I blinked. My throat tightened. "Sera—"

"I can't testify," she said. "I'm sorry. But I needed you to know that before you walked in there."

She turned and left before I could answer. I stood in the doorway with Buster at my side, watching her disappear down the hall, and inside my chest the warmth flared—brighter than it had been since the rejection. Not loud. Not strong. But there.

My wolf whispered one word.

*Soon.*

---

I traveled to the Council tribunal location alone.

Buster walked beside me on his lead, his body calm and steady, his eyes scanning the territory with the instinct of a creature who had lived his whole life reading pack dynamics without needing language. The tribunal hall was North Territory, neutral ground, a stone building with high windows and the Lycan Council's crescent-moon seal carved above the entrance.

I paused at the edge of the tribunal grounds. The mark on my neck was cold and visible. My wolf was barely a whisper. I had no allies inside, no rank, no pack. I was a rejected, near-wolfless Omega standing alone against an Alpha's formal petition, three coerced Deltas, and a chosen mate who had spent weeks weaponizing fragility.

I straightened. I walked in.

The chamber was larger than I expected—high ceilings, stone walls, rows of benches for witnesses and pack observers. The air smelled like old wood and something sharper, something that made my wolf stir faintly in recognition. Authority. Power. The kind that did not need to announce itself.

Stefan stood near the front with Heidi tucked close to his side. He was dressed in formal Alpha attire, his posture commanding, his face composed with the particular certainty of a man who had never been meaningfully checked. Heidi's eyes were red-rimmed, her hands trembling at her sides, performing distress with the precision of someone who had practiced it.

The three junior Deltas—Marcus Veil, Tomas Harrow, Jenna Cross—sat together on the witness bench. Marcus's hands were folded tight in his lap. His eyes would not meet mine.

I took a seat on the far side of the chamber, alone. Buster settled at my feet. The cold mark on my neck pulsed once, faint and hollow.

And then the air in the room changed.

It was subtle at first—a shift in temperature, a new scent threading under the stone and wood. Something ancient. Something that made every wolf in the chamber go still without knowing why. I lifted my head and caught it: iron and snow and the specific gravity of a bloodline that had ruled long before any Alpha present had been born.

The door at the front of the chamber opened.

Lycan Prince Dominic Ashford walked in.

He was tall, composed, and moved with the stillness of someone whose power was so established he had no need to perform it. His eyes swept the room once—Stefan's performance of righteousness, Heidi's calibrated distress, the junior Deltas avoiding my gaze, and me, pale and alone with the cold rejection mark exposed on my neck.

He took the presiding seat without ceremony. His hands rested loose on the armrests. His face was unreadable.

But his wolf was restless.

I could feel it from across the chamber—a frequency that had no clear cause, a tension that did not match the stillness of his body. His nostrils flared once, briefly, as though catching a scent he could not place.

He looked directly at me.

For one suspended moment, his eyes held mine. I saw something flicker behind them—recognition, confusion, something older than either—and then it was gone, smoothed over by the composed mask of a presiding judge.

He opened the tribunal file and spoke, his voice measured and final.

"Petition accepted. We will hear testimony in the order submitted. Alpha Stefan Cooper, you may present your case."

Stefan stood. He smiled—thin, certain, the smile of a man who had already won.

And across the chamber, Dominic Ashford's wolf growled low enough that only I could hear it.
