Chapter 3

Buster rose from the threshold.

He didn't stand the way dogs stand when they're curious or alert. He stood the way wolves stand when they've scented something wrong in the bones of the world. His head dropped low. His shoulders went tight. And then he growled—low, sustained, unperformable. The sound came from somewhere older than training, older than commands, a frequency that belonged to pack instinct and nothing else.

Stefan ignored it.

He stepped over the scattered wreaths and turned back to face me, his jaw set, his eyes hard with the particular certainty of a man who has never been meaningfully checked. "You're pathetic, Alana." His voice was conversational, almost gentle. "This grief is theater. You should have accepted the rejection with the silence of the Omega you truly are. Instead you're here, performing for an audience of no one, lighting candles for a man who was a burden to this pack for thirty years."

I did not raise my voice.

I went quieter.

I have learned, over the years, that quiet unnerves people more than volume. I stayed kneeling by the candles, my hands loose in my lap, and I looked up at him with the flat, empty calm of someone who has already paid every price and has nothing left to spend.

"Did you check the scent on the remains, Stefan?"

The question landed soft as ash.

His expression flickered. Just once. Just enough. His mouth opened, then closed. Behind him, Heidi's hand tightened on his sleeve—a small, reflexive gesture that told me she had heard the question too, and she knew exactly why it mattered.

Stefan did not answer.

He didn't need to. His silence confirmed everything. He had not scent-checked the body. He had not needed to, because Enoch's belongings had been at the site, because the narrative had been handed to him clean and complete, because arrogance is a perceptual filter that makes evidence unnecessary.

I held his gaze and said nothing.

Inside my chest, my wolf stirred—faint, so faint, but there. A single word surfaced through the dark, clearer than before.

*Soon.*

And then the air in the room changed.

It was subtle at first—a shift in temperature, a new scent threading under the cedar smoke. Living scent. Familiar scent. Iron and patience and the specific warmth of a wolf whose inner beast had gone dormant decades ago but whose bloodline had never stopped being exactly what it was.

Enoch Burke wheeled into the doorway.

He did not announce himself. He did not speak. He simply arrived, his chair's wheels silent on the wood floor, his hands resting calm on the armrests, his face composed with the dignity of a man who has already paid the highest price and has nothing left to prove. His scent filled the space—distinct, living, irrefutably not the bloodline scent on the burned remains.

The room went absolutely still.

I watched Stefan's face. I watched the exact moment his constructed reality developed its first visible crack. His eyes went to my father, then back to me, then back to my father, and I saw the question forming behind his teeth—*if Enoch is alive, then who burned?*—but the question did not make it to sound.

Arrogance sealed the crack with fury.

"What is this?" Stefan's voice went sharp, loud, filling the room the way Alpha tone fills a room when reason has left the building. "What kind of cruel psychological trick are you playing, Alana?"

I blinked. Once. Slowly.

"My father is alive," I said quietly. "He's been alive. He was never at the site."

Stefan's jaw worked. His hands curled into fists at his sides. He took a step toward me, then stopped, his body vibrating with the specific tension of a man whose wolf is telling him something his human mind refuses to hear.

"You staged this," he said. "You brought him here to destabilize Heidi. To make her think—" He stopped. He turned to Heidi, whose hand was pressed to her mouth in performative horror, her eyes wide and wet. "You see what she's doing? This is an attack on you. On us. She's trying to make you doubt yourself, to make the pack think I made a mistake."

Heidi's eyes cut to the doorway where my father sat. For just a moment—just a fraction of a second—they were not horrified at all. They were calculating. Measuring. And then the performance snapped back into place and she made a soft, broken sound that was meant to be a sob.

"I can't," she whispered. "Stefan, I can't be here. She's—this is too much."

Stefan's arm went around her shoulders, pulling her close, his body angling to shield her from the room's attention. He looked at me over her head, and his face was a mask of righteous fury.

"You are dangerous, Alana," he said. "You are unstable. You are a threat to this pack and to my mate, and I will not allow it to continue." He straightened, his voice dropping into the formal register he used for pack law. "I am petitioning the Lycan Council to strip you of your wolf and exile you as a rogue. You will answer for what you've done."

The candles on the table flickered but did not go out.

I stayed kneeling. I looked at my father, whose face was calm and still, whose hands had not moved from the armrests. I looked at Buster, whose growl had gone silent but whose body was still coiled tight, every muscle ready. I looked at Stefan, whose arrogance had just built the walls of his own cage.

And I said, very quietly, "The Council will want to see the evidence."

Stefan's expression went flat. "There is no evidence. There's only your word against mine, and you are a rejected, wolfless Omega with no pack and no standing."

I reached into my inner pocket and pulled out the healer's documentation lens. I set it on the table beside the candles, the small glass surface catching the light.

"Three photographs," I said. "Three angles. The remains. The scent. The silver coin at the throat."

Stefan stared at the lens. His face went pale.

I stood slowly, my knees stiff, my hands steady. "Petition the Council, Stefan. I'll be waiting."

He turned and walked out, dragging Heidi with him. The door slammed shut. The cedar smoke curled toward the ceiling.

My father wheeled forward, just slightly, and his voice—quiet, final—broke the silence.

"You did well, Alana."

I closed my eyes. Inside my chest, my wolf whispered one word.
