Chapter 2

The neutral packhouse smelled like old wood and someone else's soap. No one asked my name when I arrived. The woman at the desk—gray-haired, tired—looked at the open mark on my neck, looked at Buster's lead in my hand, and slid a key across the counter without a word. Room seven. Second floor. No pack affiliation required.

I climbed the stairs slowly. My legs remembered how to move, but they had not yet remembered why. Buster stayed close, his shoulder brushing my calf every third step, the way he used to do when I came home late from the healing ward. Inside the room I set my bag on the bed and sat on the floor instead. The bed was too soft. The floor made sense.

I pulled the healer's documentation lens from my inner pocket and held it up to the window light. Three photographs. Three angles. The silver coin at Alfredo's throat, blackened but unmistakable, the chain melted into what had been skin. I had carried this evidence for two days and had not yet decided what to do with it. Stefan believed he had killed my father. The pack believed it. Heidi believed it. I was the only wolf alive who knew the truth, and the truth had no pack to protect it.

I set the lens on the windowsill and pressed my palms to my knees.

Inside my chest, my wolf was so quiet I had to hold my breath to feel her at all. A flicker. A warmth smaller than a candle. She had said *wait* two nights ago, and I had been waiting, but I did not know what I was waiting for.

Buster's head lifted.

I heard footsteps in the hall—measured, deliberate—and then a soft knock. I stood. My hand went to the door before I could think better of it.

Sera Okafor stood in the hallway holding my medical kit in one hand and a plain cardboard box in the other. She was mid-ranked Ironclad, a Healer who worked the night shift and kept her head down and had once told me, years ago, that my wolf's silence felt like waiting rather than absence. She had not elaborated. I had not asked her to.

She did not smile. She stepped inside, set the kit on the small table by the window, and placed the box beside it. I could smell beeswax and something green—ritual candles, the kind used for mourning.

"You left this," she said quietly, nodding at the kit. "And you'll need these."

I looked at the box. My throat tightened. "Sera—"

"I'm not here," she said, already turning toward the door. "I didn't see you. I don't know where you went." She paused at the threshold, her back to me. "But if you're going to do a vigil, do it right. He deserves that much."

She left before I could answer. The door clicked shut. Buster sniffed the box once, then settled at my feet.

I opened the box slowly. Twelve white candles. A bundle of dried cedar. A small vial of anointing oil. Everything required for a proper mourning rite, laid out with the precision of someone who had done this before. I pressed my fingers to the cool wax and felt something crack open in my chest that was not quite grief and not quite relief.

Alfredo Cooper would not go unhonored.

---

I arranged the vigil in the packhouse's common room that night. The space was neutral ground—no pack could claim it, no Alpha could forbid it. I set the candles in a circle on the low table, lit them one by one, and placed the cedar bundle in the center. The smoke rose thin and gray, carrying the scent I had known since childhood.

I did not say his name aloud. I could not, not yet, not when the pack believed someone else was dead. But I performed every rite owed to a former Alpha. I anointed the candles with oil. I spoke the old words, the ones my father had taught me, the ones that honored a wolf's passage whether or not anyone was there to witness it. Buster lay at the threshold, his body a line between the vigil and the door, watchful and calm for the first time since the crisis.

I was halfway through the second prayer when the door slammed open.

Stefan stood in the doorway with Heidi tucked half-behind his shoulder. His face was flushed, his jaw tight, and his eyes went straight to the candles on the table. He crossed the room in four strides and swept his arm across the wreaths I had set on the far side, scattering them across the floor.

"What the hell is this?" His voice was loud enough to carry into the hall. "You're performing grief for a corpse nobody wanted?"

I did not move. I stayed kneeling by the candles, my hands loose in my lap, and met his eyes without blinking.

"He deserves to be honored," I said quietly.

Stefan laughed—short, sharp, ugly. "Your father was a burden, Alana. He should have died decades ago when his wolf went dormant. Alfredo kept him alive out of guilt, and all it did was drain the pack. Heidi did everyone a favor."

Behind him, Heidi made a soft sound—something between a gasp and a whimper. Her hands trembled at her sides, her eyes downcast, performing distress with the precision of someone who had practiced it. She did not step forward. She stayed exactly where she was, letting Stefan's body absorb the room's hostility while she radiated fragility.

I looked at her for a long moment. Then I looked back at Stefan.

"You didn't scent-check the body," I said.

His expression flickered. Just once. Just enough.

"I don't need to," he said. "Enoch's belongings were at the site. His scent was everywhere. You're the only one pretending otherwise."

I held his gaze and said nothing. Inside my chest, my wolf stirred—faint, so faint, but there. A single word surfaced through the dark, clearer than before.

*Soon.*

Stefan turned and walked out, Heidi trailing behind him like a shadow. The door slammed shut. The candles flickered but did not go out.

I stayed kneeling. I finished the prayer. And when the last candle burned low, I pressed my palm to the floor and whispered the name I could not yet say aloud.

"Alfredo."

Buster's ears lifted. Outside, the wind picked up, carrying the scent of cedar and smoke into the night.
