Chapter 3

Kaden Bishop said yes the way a man says yes when he already knew he was going to.

No hesitation. No questions about who I was or why a woman with no pack flag was standing outside a bar in Cedar Hollow at two in the morning asking a packless bouncer to track rogue alliance networks. He just nodded, said he could start Thursday, and told me to meet him in the back office at nine.

That should have been suspicious. It was suspicious. I filed it under things to revisit and drove home with the windows down.

---

The back office smelled like old wood and cigarette smoke from a decade ago. There was a folding table, two chairs, and a single overhead light that buzzed faintly when it warmed up. Kaden was already there when I arrived, jacket off, sleeves rolled to the elbow, a cup of coffee in front of him that he hadn't touched.

I set my laptop on the table and pulled up the network map I'd built from Killian's files. Fourteen rogue contacts across the eastern corridor. Three active supply routes. Two territorial deals that violated inter-pack commerce law so cleanly that any Pack Council arbitrator would have to act on them.

Kaden leaned forward and studied it.

He didn't ask me to explain it. He didn't ask who the Alpha was or which pack the routes ran through. He just looked at it the way someone looks at a map they've seen the shape of before — not the specific details, but the structure. The logic of it.

After a minute he pointed to the middle route. "This one's the load-bearing connection. Cut it and the other two lose their cover."

I looked at him.

"How does a packless bouncer read an intelligence map like a Beta?" I asked.

He picked up his coffee. Took a slow sip. Set it down. "I pick things up."

The non-answer landed in the room and sat there, comfortable as a cat. He wasn't embarrassed by it. He wasn't defensive. He just looked at me with those steady eyes and waited to see what I'd do with it.

I noted it. Filed it. Moved on.

"I need confirmation on the eastern contact," I said. "Name, location, and proof of the last transaction. That's the first delivery."

He nodded. "Give me a week."

"You have five days."

The corner of his mouth moved. "Four," he said. "I'll have it in four."

I closed my laptop. He walked me to the door, and when I stepped out into the cold morning air, the scent hit me again — dark pine, rain-soaked leather, that warm undercurrent I still didn't have a word for. My wolf pressed forward, quiet and insistent, like a tide coming in.

I kept walking.

---

Killian moved on Tuesday.

I heard about the council session from Marcus — not directly, not with any disloyalty intended. He mentioned it in passing while I was crossing the main corridor, the way a Beta mentions things he thinks the Luna already knows. "The Alpha's called a full council for Thursday," he said. "Formal session."

His eyes stayed on mine for just a beat too long.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, and kept walking.

Thursday came gray and cold. I dressed carefully — not the way I used to dress for pack functions, when I was performing Luna for an audience that expected it. I dressed the way I dressed when I needed to be underestimated. Simple. Quiet. Nothing that announced itself.

The council chamber held twenty-two wolves. Killian stood at the head of the table in a charcoal suit, his Alpha aura pressed out to fill the room. Arielle sat two seats to his right, in a chair that was not technically the Luna's chair but was close enough to make the point.

I sat in the middle of the room. Not at the back. Not at the front. The middle, where I could see everyone's face.

Killian presented his narrative with the precision of a man who had rehearsed it. The rogue ambush. The chaos of the attack. The severing of the bond — he described it as a physical rupture, something that happened to him, something he had no control over. His voice carried the full weight of his Alpha tone, and I watched it press against the council members the way it always did, that low resonant command that made wolves want to believe whatever followed it.

Then he called his witnesses.

Two wolves from the ambush party. Both gave clean, consistent accounts. The attack, the confusion, the Alpha going down briefly before recovering. One of them — a Delta named Corvin, young, nervous, not meeting anyone's eyes — described seeing Killian's mark on Olivia's neck flare and then go dark.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist under the table.

The mark had not gone dark. I could feel it right now, faint but present, the way a scar feels in cold weather. But Corvin believed what he was saying, or he was very good at performing belief, and the council was watching him with the particular attention of wolves who wanted a clean explanation for a messy situation.

Killian let the testimony settle. Then he looked at me.

"Olivia's continued presence in the Luna's quarters," he said, carefully, "creates confusion for the pack. I want to be sensitive to her situation. But the Moon Goddess's will cannot be delayed indefinitely out of courtesy."

Courtesy. The word landed like a small, precise insult.

I looked back at him. I kept my face exactly as composed as it had been for the past ten days — the face of a woman processing loss with admirable dignity. I let him read whatever he wanted into it.

"I appreciate the Alpha's patience," I said. Quiet. Measured. "I'll need a little more time to review the relevant documentation before I respond formally."

A few council members nodded. Reasonable. Gracious. A Luna handling an impossible situation with class.

Killian's jaw tightened by a fraction. He had wanted me to either fight or fold. I had done neither, and he didn't know what to do with that.

The session ended. I walked out at the same measured pace I had walked out of the great hall ten days ago.

---

The archive room was in the east wing, past the training corridor, behind a door that most pack members had no reason to open. I had a key. I had always had a key — Luna's access, standard protocol.

I pulled the original Luna Accord from the filing cabinet at the back. The physical copy, not the digital one. Thick paper, formal seal, both our signatures at the bottom in ink.

I sat down under the single lamp and read it.

Not for the first time. Not even for the tenth. But this time I read it differently — not looking for what it said, but for the exact shape of what it required. The fidelity and honor clause was in Article Nine, three paragraphs, one hundred and forty-two words. I had memorized them years ago. I read them again anyway.

The clause required proof of willful violation. Not accident. Not circumstance. Willful.

Killian's rogue trade dealings were willful. Documented, dated, and conducted under an encrypted channel he had built specifically to hide them — which was itself evidence of intent.

The fabricated bond-severance narrative was willful. Two coached witnesses and a performance in front of the full pack council was not a man processing grief. It was a man constructing a case.

I turned to Article Twelve. The counter-filing provision. Rarely used, because it required the filing party to present evidence of violation before the betrayal clause could be formally triggered against them.

I had twenty-three files.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and held it there, feeling my own pulse, steady and even.

Killian had spent months building a trap with my name on it. He had built it carefully, legally, using the exact language of the document we had both signed.

He had not considered that I had read that document more carefully than he had.

I stayed in the archive room until past midnight, making notes in the margins of a legal pad in my small, precise handwriting. Outside, the pack house was quiet. Somewhere in the east wing, Killian was sleeping in the bed we had shared for seven years, probably believing that Thursday's council session had gone exactly as planned.

Let him believe it.

I had everything I needed. I just needed the right moment to use it.
