Chapter 2

Eleanor called Henry into her study at ten minutes past midnight.

I know this because she told me later, in a voice that still carried the weight of what she'd read. But that night, I was forty miles away in a rental house that smelled like old paint and someone else's cooking, sitting at a kitchen table under a fluorescent light that buzzed when the wind hit the windows.

Buster was asleep on a folded blanket in the corner. The file was closed. The Council petition — stamped, dated, already in motion — sat in a fireproof lockbox under the sink.

I made coffee at four in the morning because I couldn't sleep and didn't see the point in pretending. The bond scar on my neck had stopped aching around two. Now it just felt cold. Numb. Like scar tissue over a wound that had finally stopped bleeding.

I opened my laptop.

The encrypted channel I'd maintained for three years sat in a browser window I'd kept minimized since the day I drove away from Shadowvale. I hadn't checked it. I hadn't needed to. Danielle was predictable in the way desperate people always are.

The message was timestamped 11:43 PM.

*Need updated schedule for next week. Willing to pay double. Urgent.*

I read it twice. Then I read it again.

She didn't know I'd left. She didn't know the rejection had been spoken in front of two hundred witnesses. She didn't know that the file she'd helped me build — one expensive tip at a time — was already sitting in front of a Council clerk with my formal seal on it.

She thought she was still winning.

I finished my coffee. I transferred the payment she'd offered into the legal fund I'd been building since the first month of my mating. Three years of Danielle's money, carefully laundered through neutral accounts, funding the case that would destroy her.

Then I closed the channel.

Permanently.

The screen went dark. I sat back. Buster's tail thumped once against the floor in his sleep.

The irony landed clean and cold, the way good irony always does. Danielle had spent three years paying me to document her own destruction. Every schedule she bought. Every private preference. Every intimate detail of Henry's routines that she'd used to position herself exactly where he'd see her, want her, need her.

All of it was in the file now.

All of it had her money on it.

I smiled into the dark.

Eleanor's study, I learned later, had been very quiet.

She'd set the file on the desk between them — open to page seven, where the scent logs began. Dated entries. Witnessed timestamps. Danielle's presence in Henry's private quarters documented with the kind of precision that holds up under Council scrutiny because it was never emotional, never accusatory, just factual.

Henry had walked in expecting a lecture. Maybe some disappointment. The usual maternal concern he'd learned to deflect with charm and the assumption that she'd forgive him eventually because she always had.

What he got was Eleanor's voice, low and cold, asking him a single question.

"Did you read what you just rejected?"

He hadn't.

She told him to sit. He didn't. She told him again, and this time her Luna tone — the one she rarely used, the one that had run Shadowvale's household for thirty years while his father built alliances — made him sit.

She walked him through it. Page by page. The bond violations. The documented nights. The Council petition already filed, already moving through channels he had no access to and no authority to stop.

Henry's face, she said, had gone very still.

Then he'd said, "She couldn't have done this herself."

Eleanor had looked at him for a long time.

"You never knew her at all, did you?"

Henry stood. He paced. He said Danielle was his true mate, the one he'd chosen before the Moon Goddess interfered. He said Alexia's petition was desperate. A bluff. She'd never shifted, never contributed, never been strong enough to matter.

Eleanor's hand came down flat on the desk.

"Danielle is banned from all pack functions. Effective immediately. She will report to Omega duties tomorrow morning."

Henry stared.

"You can't—"

"I can." Eleanor's voice didn't rise. It didn't need to. "And if you cannot see what you've done, I will not protect you from what comes next."

Henry left without conceding a single point.

Eleanor sat alone in her study until dawn, the file still open in front of her, and did not call him back.

Two weeks later, Shadowvale's cracks started showing.

It began with Ironridge.

The neighboring pack had been negotiating a territory-sharing agreement for six months — a framework that would let both packs hunt a disputed border zone during winter without conflict. The treaty draft was elegant. Precise. Built on precedents that balanced wolf law and practical logistics in a way that made both Alphas look good.

Henry's Beta, Marcus Reid, walked into the final negotiation meeting with the draft in hand and confidence in his stride.

Ironridge's Alpha read the first page and frowned.

"This citation — the Northmarch Accord of 2seventh — where's the original text?"

Marcus blinked. "It's standard precedent."

"Show me."

Marcus couldn't.

Because the Northmarch Accord didn't exist. I'd invented it. Three years ago, during a different negotiation, I'd constructed a plausible-sounding historical framework that gave Shadowvale leverage without actually requiring documentation. It had worked because I'd been in the room to defend it, to pivot when questioned, to guide the conversation toward terms that didn't require proof.

Marcus had no idea.

The negotiation stalled.

Ironridge's Alpha called it a credibility issue and walked out.

Then the border patrols started missing incursions. Small ones. A rogue sighting here. A scent marker moved there. Nothing catastrophic. Just... sloppy. The rotation schedule I'd optimized had been efficient because it accounted for terrain, pack dynamics, and the specific strengths of individual warriors. The old schedule didn't.

Pack elders started talking.

Quietly, over morning coffee in the common hall, they compared notes. Traced timelines. Someone mentioned that the Ironridge treaty language sounded like Alexia's phrasing. Someone else remembered she'd restructured the patrol routes two winters ago. A third elder pointed out that the last successful alliance negotiation had been the month before she left.

No one said it outright.

But they all heard it.

Henry, in his office, signed off on a revised patrol schedule that made the problem worse and told Marcus the Ironridge situation would resolve itself.

It didn't.

And in a rental house forty miles away, I sat at my kitchen table, drank my coffee, and waited for the Council to call.
