Chapter 4

The tribunal date came back faster than I expected.

Ten days. Not two weeks. The neutral-territory clerk handed me the sealed notice with a look that told me someone had pushed for speed, and speed in Council proceedings was never good news for the person without institutional backing.

I opened it in the waystation's common room. The date was stamped at the top in formal script. Below it, a single line:

*Alpha Jaden Voss has filed a counter-statement. Full documentation attached.*

I didn't need to read the documentation to know what it said. I read it anyway.

Unstable Omega. Unauthorized healing-wing access. Fabricated involvement. The language was careful, clinical, the kind of phrasing that sounded reasonable on paper and devastating in a Council chamber. And at the bottom, a witness signature: Marcus Vane, Beta of Ironveil Pack.

Jaden's second-in-command. The wolf who'd stood silent in the healing wing doorway while I burned everything.

I set the notice down and pressed two fingers to the cold scar on my neck.

The snarl in my chest pulsed once. Patient. Waiting.

---

The first refusal came two days later.

Maren, the neutral-territory healer who'd told me about Ironveil's warriors, sent a brief message through the waystation's registry clerk. She couldn't testify. Personal reasons. She was sorry.

No explanation. No details.

I folded the message and set it aside.

The second refusal came the next morning. Then the third that afternoon. Different healers, different packs, same vague language. Personal reasons. Scheduling conflicts. Apologies.

The fourth healer — a woman named Kira from a border pack I'd traded compound notes with years ago — sent her refusal with something extra.

A letter. Folded twice. Scarlet Langford's signature at the bottom.

I read it standing in the waystation's narrow hallway, one hand braced against the wall.

The letter was polished. Reasonable. It called me a rogue thief who had endangered Ironveil wolves with unauthorized compounds. It requested — not demanded, requested — that packs deny me shelter, sponsorship, or testimony support in the interest of regional pack safety.

It was signed by Luna Scarlet Voss.

Luna.

I read the signature three times.

She'd taken his name. Taken the title. Taken the fresh mark on her neck and turned it into institutional weight, and now she was using that weight to cut off every avenue I had left.

I folded the letter carefully. Slid it into my pocket. Walked upstairs to the small room I'd finally accepted from Enzo after the third night of sleeping against the outer wall had left my back too stiff to function.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at nothing.

No witnesses. No testimony. Just me, standing alone in a Council chamber, with Jaden's counter-statement and Scarlet's blacklist campaign and Marcus Vane's signature all stacked against me.

The snarl in my chest went very quiet.

Not gone. Listening.

---

Enzo found me that evening in the waystation's back room.

I'd been sitting there for an hour, staring at the stack of refusal messages spread across the table, when I heard his footsteps in the hallway. Cedar and winter air reached me before he did. My wolf stirred, sluggish and confused, and I shoved it back down.

He stopped in the doorway. Looked at the messages. Looked at me.

"How many?" he asked quietly.

"Four," I said. "So far."

He was silent for a moment. Then he stepped into the room and set a folder on the table beside the refusals.

"I need a consultant," he said.

I looked up.

"Lycan Crown medical archive report," he continued. "Wolfsbane compounds. Regional exposure data. I'm required to compile it as part of the audit." He paused. "I'm offering you a paid commission."

I stared at him.

"You need resources," he said simply. "I need accurate information. This isn't charity."

The way he said it — flat, matter-of-fact, no softness underneath — made something in my chest unclench slightly.

"When?" I asked.

"Evenings. Starting tonight, if you're available."

I looked at the refusal messages. At the folder he'd set down. At the careful distance he was keeping from the table.

"I'm available," I said.

---

We worked in silence for the first hour.

Enzo spread his Council audit notes across one end of the table — exposure reports, pack medical records, incident logs. I sat at the other end and reconstructed formulas from memory, writing them out in my shorthand cipher because the muscle memory of it was the only thing keeping my hands steady.

He didn't ask me to translate the cipher. He watched, occasionally, when I paused to recalculate a ratio or cross-reference a compound interaction. But he didn't push.

The tension built slowly.

In the way my scent sharpened when I finally cracked a formula I'd been circling for twenty minutes and his breath slowed. In the way he asked — "May I see that sample?" — instead of just reaching. In the way I caught myself watching his hands when he made notes, the controlled precision of it, and had to refocus.

I pressed two fingers to the scar on my neck.

The cold was still there. The bond was still gone. But something else was building in the space it left, and I didn't have a name for it yet.

Enzo looked up.

"You're doing that a lot," he said quietly.

I dropped my hand. "Doing what?"

"Touching your neck."

I didn't answer.

He set his pen down. Leaned back slightly. "The phantom pain. How bad is it?"

"Manageable," I said.

His mouth tightened. Not disagreement. Disbelief.

"Liv," he said, and the way he said my name — quiet, deliberate, like he was testing the weight of it — made my wolf stir again.

I looked at him directly. "I'm managing it. That's all you need to know."

The silence stretched.

Then Enzo nodded once and picked up his pen.

We worked for another hour. He sat farther from the table than necessary. I noticed. I didn't comment.

When we finally stopped, the sky outside was full dark and my hand was cramping from writing. Enzo gathered his notes carefully, stacking them in the same precise order he'd laid them out.

"Tomorrow night?" he asked.

"Tomorrow night," I agreed.

He paused at the doorway. Turned back.

"The tribunal," he said. "You're still going."

It wasn't a question.

"Yes," I said.

"Alone."

"Yes."

Something flickered across his face. His wolf, maybe. Or the part of him that was fighting his wolf.

"Understood," he said finally.

And then he left.

I sat in the empty room and stared at the formulas I'd reconstructed. At the refusal messages still stacked at the table's edge. At the space where Enzo had been sitting, slightly farther away than necessary.

The snarl in my chest pulsed.

Patient.

Waiting.

Listening.
