Chapter 5

I found Rylie's note slipped under my door at the waystation three nights before the tribunal.

No signature. Just a date, a pack member's name, and a dosage notation in handwriting I recognized from years of shared healing-wing shifts. The kind of detail only someone who'd been watching would remember.

I sat on the edge of my bed and stared at it for a long time.

One notation wasn't evidence. But it was a crack in the wall Jaden had built, and cracks were where everything started.

I folded the note carefully and tucked it into my pocket.

---

The wolfsbane exposure test protocol took two hours to design.

Enzo spread the compound samples across the worktable in the waystation's back room — six variations, each calibrated to a different concentration. I worked through the calculations in my cipher shorthand while he cross-referenced Council medical standards.

"This concentration," I said, tapping the third sample. "Administered dermally. Any ordinary wolf would show incapacitation symptoms within thirty seconds. Full motor compromise in two minutes."

Enzo looked at the sample, then at me. "And you?"

"I've been exposed to worse," I said simply. "For three years."

His jaw tightened slightly. Not disagreement. Recognition of what that exposure had cost.

I reached for the test compound to demonstrate the concentration ratio. My fingers had just closed around the vial when his hand came down over mine.

Not grabbing. Just there. Warm and solid and sudden.

I froze.

He didn't pull back immediately. His palm pressed against my knuckles, his thumb against the inside of my wrist where my pulse was suddenly too fast. Cedar and winter air flooded the space between us, so intense I couldn't breathe around it.

My wolf snarled in my chest. Not angry. Awake.

Enzo's breath slowed. His pale eyes locked on mine, and I watched something fracture behind them — the careful control he'd been maintaining since the first morning, the deliberate distance, all of it cracking in one unguarded second.

Then he pulled back.

Slowly. Deliberately. His hand lifting away from mine like it cost him something.

I set the vial down. My hand was shaking.

"Tomorrow," he said quietly. His voice was rougher than it had been. "We'll run the test tomorrow. With a neutral witness present."

I nodded. I didn't trust my voice.

He gathered his notes without looking at me again and left.

I sat alone in the empty room and pressed two fingers to the cold scar on my neck. The phantom ache pulsed once, sharp and immediate.

But underneath it, something else was building.

Something that had nothing to do with the bond I'd lost.

---

The pre-hearing happened two days later in a Council administrative chamber.

Small room. Stone walls. A single table with Marcus Vane seated on one side, a Council clerk on the other. I stood because no one had offered me a chair.

Marcus read Jaden's counter-testimony in a flat, professional voice. Unauthorized access. Fabricated credentials. Unstable behavior patterns. The language was careful and clinical and designed to sound reasonable.

I listened without interrupting.

When he finished, the clerk asked if I had a response.

"I do," I said. "But I'll present it at the formal tribunal."

Marcus's mouth tightened slightly. He set the document down and leaned back.

That was when the mind-link opened.

I felt it before I heard it — a pressure at the base of my skull, invasive and wrong. Then Jaden's voice flooded through, carrying the full weight of his Alpha tone.

"Liv Ashford. Stand down. Withdraw your petition. This is a direct order."

The tone hit like a physical force. My knees wanted to bend. My spine wanted to curve. Every instinct I'd spent three years conditioning screamed at me to submit, to drop my eyes, to bare my neck.

I locked my jaw. Flattened my palms on the table. And held my ground.

The snarl in my chest rose — not my wolf, not yet, but something close. Something furious and cold and absolutely immovable.

Jaden's tone pressed harder. "Stand. Down."

My vision blurred at the edges. My hands were shaking against the table. But I didn't move.

The link closed abruptly.

I stayed standing. Breathing hard. My entire body rigid with the effort of not collapsing.

The Council clerk was staring at me. Marcus had gone very still.

"I want that mind-link record flagged," I said. My voice came out steady. Barely. "Attempted intimidation of a petitioner. Abuse of Alpha authority outside pack jurisdiction."

The clerk hesitated. Then she reached for her notation pad and wrote something down.

"Flagged," she said quietly.

Marcus stood. He didn't look at me as he left.

I waited until the door closed. Then I sat down in the chair no one had offered and pressed both hands flat on the table until they stopped shaking.

---

The word came through Maren that night.

She found me in the waystation's common room, her face drawn and tight.

"Emergency Council motion," she said without preamble. "Filed an hour ago. Alpha Langford invoked his seat."

I went very still. "What kind of motion?"

"Rogue declaration. Kill-on-sight." Maren's voice dropped. "Vote's scheduled for dawn. Before your tribunal concludes."

The room tilted slightly.

I understood the math immediately. If the vote passed, I was legally dead before my evidence mattered. Jaden wouldn't need to fight me in the tribunal. He'd just need to wait for the Council to do it for him.

"Who filed it?" I asked.

Maren's mouth pressed into a thin line. "Scarlet Langford. Through her father."

I sat back in my chair.

Luna Scarlet Voss. Using her new title and her father's Council seat to eliminate the one variable she couldn't control.

The snarl in my chest went very quiet.

Not gone.

Listening.

Waiting for dawn.
