Chapter 2

The pack assembly bell rang at seven.

I already knew what it was for.

Lila was still warm against my chest — not fever-warm anymore, just the soft heat of a sleeping child — when I carried her into the Ironmaw courtyard. Buster pressed against my left leg, close enough that I could feel the steady rhythm of his breathing. The morning air was cold and smelled like pine resin and frost. Pack members filed into the courtyard in loose clusters, their faces carefully neutral. Nobody looked at me directly. They had that particular stillness of people who already know what is about to happen and have decided not to be associated with it.

Weston stood on the pack house steps. Nancy was behind him, slightly to the right. Celine stood near the edge of the gathering, the moonstone pendant catching the pale morning light at her throat.

I stopped at the back of the crowd. I didn't push forward. I just stood there with my daughter and my dog and waited.

Weston's eyes found me immediately.

He didn't hesitate. I'll give him that. Whatever he was, he wasn't a coward about the parts that cost him nothing.

"Ironmaw Pack," he said. The Alpha tone settled over the courtyard like a dropped weight. "Witnesses are required for a formal declaration."

Someone shifted near the front. A few heads turned toward me.

I held Lila a little tighter.

Weston's voice came out flat and clean, the way you read something off a page.

"I, Weston Cole, Alpha of Ironmaw Pack, reject you, Lorelei, as my mate and Luna."

The mark went cold.

Not gradually. All at once — like someone had pressed a piece of ice directly against the bone. I felt it travel down my spine, into my chest, into the place where my wolf had been curled since last night's collapse. She made a sound I had no word for. Not a howl. Smaller than that. The sound of something folding in on itself.

The mate bond shredded.

That's the only word for it. Not faded. Not dissolved. Shredded — like something with edges being dragged backward through tissue, every nerve it touched lighting up before going dark. My knees wanted to buckle. I locked them. I focused on the weight of Lila against my chest, on the warmth of Buster's flank against my leg.

I did not make a sound.

Weston was still talking. "Lorelei is hereby reclassified to Omega rank and expelled from Ironmaw Pack territory, effective immediately."

Nancy moved to the pack board on the courtyard wall — a corkboard where announcements were pinned, patrol schedules, supply lists. She posted a single sheet of paper. I didn't need to read it.

Celine touched the moonstone pendant at her throat. Just briefly, just her fingertips. She wasn't smiling. She had the expression of someone watching a transaction complete.

The crowd was very quiet.

I looked at Weston. He met my eyes for a moment, and I searched his face for something — regret, doubt, the smallest flicker of the man who had once pressed his forehead to mine and said *mine* like it meant something sacred.

There was nothing there.

That was almost the worst part. Not the cruelty. The absence.

I turned around and walked back into the pack house.

---

I had almost nothing to take. That was the practical truth of it. The room Weston had assigned us held a narrow bed, a wooden chair, Lila's small crib, and a bag I had never fully unpacked because some part of me had always known.

I dressed Lila in her warmest layers, moving quickly, my hands steady. She stirred and blinked at me, her eyes still glassy from the fever. I pressed my lips to her forehead. Still warm. Not burning.

"We're going for a walk," I told her quietly. "Just you and me and Buster."

She reached up and grabbed a fistful of my hair. I untangled her fingers gently.

I took the bag. I took the vial of baby fur still knotted at my wrist. I took nothing else.

Buster was waiting at the front door when I came downstairs. He didn't move until I did.

---

The territorial boundary line ran along the northern tree line, marked by a row of old iron posts half-swallowed by moss. I had crossed it dozens of times. Always coming back.

I crossed it now and kept walking.

Ten steps past the last post, I stopped.

The ward was still there — barely, a thread of it, the last filament of years of blood and new-moon ritual and quiet, invisible sacrifice. I could feel it the way you feel a splinter you've been ignoring: a small persistent wrongness, waiting.

I reached for it.

And I let go.

It snapped. Clean and immediate. The invisible barrier dissolved — not slowly, not with ceremony, just gone, like a breath released. Somewhere behind me, Ironmaw's borders were open to everything.

I had already deployed it. That was the thought that steadied me. Not a loss. A weapon, already thrown.

Lila made a small sound against my chest. Buster pressed his nose to my knee.

I looked north, into the unclaimed tree line, into the cold and the quiet and the open territory that answered to no Alpha's name.

I walked.
