Chapter 2

I finished the last stitch just after nine o'clock.

The gown was spread across my apartment floor like a ghost — white tulle and lace, the same dress I had designed for myself in the dark hours of a life I no longer lived. I had altered the waistline, taken in the bodice, added the pearl detailing Gloria wanted along the neckline. My hands ached. My ribs still pulled when I bent forward. I sat back on my heels and looked at what I had made for another woman, and I felt nothing. Which was somehow worse than feeling something.

The knock came quietly. Three knocks, spaced and unhurried. Not the aggressive rap of a pack summons. Not Maddox's heavy fist.

I almost didn't answer.

The man in the doorway was tall. Older than Maddox by at least fifteen years, though it was hard to place exactly — there was something timeless in the set of his jaw, the stillness of how he stood. Dark hair going silver at the temples. Eyes that were very calm and very watchful at the same time.

"Marlowe." His voice was low and even. "My name is Ambrose Silvercrest. I'm Maddox's uncle. I have something I need to tell you, and I'll leave the moment you ask me to."

I should have closed the door. Every instinct trained by the last three years said close the door, another Silvercrest means another wound.

But his scent reached me.

Old forests. Winter rain. Something so deep and settled it didn't feel like a smell so much as a place — somewhere I had never been but somehow recognized as safe. My wolf didn't stir. My wolf had been silent for weeks. But something in my body, something below the level of the bond and the trauma and the months of careful numbness, went very still in the specific way things go still when they stop bracing for impact.

I stepped back from the door.

He told me everything standing in my small hallway, the gown visible on the floor behind me. He told me about my debut performance — years ago, before Maddox, before any of it. He told me what he had scented and what he had recognized and what he had chosen to do with that knowledge. He said the word "mate" once, quietly, without drama, and then he said: "I stayed silent because you were bonded to my nephew. That was the right choice. I'm not here to claim anything. I just — I needed you to know. You deserved to know."

I stared at him for a long time.

"Why now?" My voice came out rougher than I intended.

"Because the bond is severed." Simple. Factual. "And because you deserve honesty from at least one Silvercrest."

Something in my chest cracked slightly at that. I pressed my hand flat against my sternum — that old habit, that childhood reflex — and breathed through it.

"I need time," I said.

"Of course." He took a card from his jacket pocket and set it on the small table by the door. He didn't hand it to me. Didn't require me to take it from his hand. "I'll be here when you're ready. Or not. That's yours to decide."

He left. No pressure. No performance. Just the quiet click of the door and the lingering trace of winter rain in my hallway.

I stood there for a long time before I picked up the card.

---

He didn't push. That was the thing I couldn't stop turning over in the weeks that followed.

A small bouquet appeared outside my door — no note, just white flowers I didn't know the name of. Then a card with a physical therapist's name and address, someone who specialized in dancer rehabilitation. Then a handwritten list of ballet studios, with small notations beside each one: good light here, good floors here, quiet in the mornings.

I didn't call the number right away. But I went to the physical therapist. I stood outside two of the studios on the list and looked at the doors without going in.

Small steps. My wolf was still silent, but something in me was beginning to thaw at the edges.

The café was his suggestion, eventually — somewhere neither of us would be recognized, neutral ground. I arrived first and chose a corner table by instinct. He arrived exactly on time, ordered coffee, and then asked me about dancing.

Not about what I gave up. Not about Maddox. Not about the underground club or the pack debts or the years I spent making myself smaller so someone else could be larger. Just: what was it like, dancing? What did it feel like when you were in it?

No one had asked me that in years. Maybe ever.

I found myself talking. Haltingly at first, then with more certainty. About the way a good rehearsal felt like flying in slow motion. About the specific silence of a stage right before the music starts. About being eighteen and believing my whole life was going to be made of that.

"When you're ready," he said, when I trailed off, "I know a studio with good light."

I looked at him across the table. His face was patient. No expectation in it, no agenda I could find.

"Maybe," I said.

It was the first maybe I had meant in a very long time.

---

Maddox sat alone in the pack house office with the financial ledgers spread open across his desk.

He had been sitting there for two hours.

The numbers were not complicated. They were, in fact, devastatingly simple — a clear, cold record of every debt paid, every account covered, every month the pack had survived on resources that hadn't come from the pack at all. He had never looked closely. He had never asked. He had simply accepted the survival as his due and moved on to the next crisis.

He turned a page. Then another. His wolf paced restlessly in his chest, the way it had been doing since the bond severed — that low, constant agitation, like an animal circling a space where something used to be.

He closed the ledger.

The silence in the office was enormous. In it, he could still almost smell cedar and jasmine — the ghost of a scent that had been fading for weeks, no matter how he tried not to notice. Her chair across the room. The kitchen down the hall. His own skin, where her presence had once been woven in and was now simply gone.

He had never known. He had never asked.

He sat in that silence for a long time, and he did not move.
