Chapter 5

The first photograph came through on Wednesday morning.

I was drinking coffee at the kitchen counter when my phone lit up. Bridget's name. No message. Just an image.

Colin and Bridget at a restaurant. Candlelight. His hand covering hers on the white tablecloth. Her smile was soft and intimate. The kind of smile meant for someone who belonged to you.

I set down my coffee and stared at it.

The second photo came ten minutes later. A gallery. Colin's hand at the small of Bridget's back, guiding her through a doorway. Her head tilted toward his shoulder like she was telling him a secret.

The third: a cobblestone street at night. The two of them framed by old Parisian streetlamps. It looked like a movie still. Romantic. Intentional. Perfect.

I didn't feel anything.

The fourth photo made me pause.

Bridget in white. A bridal boutique. Soft focus. Colin standing beside her in a dark suit, his expression unreadable but present. Committed. She held a bouquet. The composition was careful. Deliberate. It looked exactly like a wedding portrait.

The fifth was a closer shot. Same setting. Bridget's hand on Colin's chest. His hand at her waist. The light was golden. They looked like people in love.

I studied that one for a long time.

Then I forwarded all five photographs to Colin. I typed one line beneath them: *Congratulations. Consider this my blessing.*

I hit send.

Then I put my phone face-down on the counter and finished my coffee.

The apartment was quiet. The city stretched out below me through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Forty floors of glass and steel and distance. I'd spent five years in this beautiful, lifeless box.

I felt nothing.

Not anger. Not grief. Not even relief.

Just a vast, clean emptiness where Colin Barnes used to live in my chest.

I picked up my phone and called Diana.

"I just sent Colin his wedding photos," I said when she answered.

"What?"

"Bridget sent me pictures from Paris. They went to a bridal boutique. Very staged. Very convincing. I forwarded them to him with my blessing."

Silence. Then Diana laughed. It was sharp and bright and fierce.

"You're done," she said.

"Yeah," I said quietly. "I am."

"How do you feel?"

I looked around the penthouse. The marble. The designer furniture. The art Colin's decorator had chosen. The life I'd never wanted.

"Empty," I said. "In a good way."

"That's freedom, babe," Diana said softly. "That's what it feels like when you finally let go."

She was right.

Three days later, I woke up nauseous.

It wasn't dramatic. Just a slow, rolling queasiness that started the moment I opened my eyes. I lay very still and breathed through my mouth and waited for it to pass.

It didn't.

I made it to the bathroom just in time. When I was done, I sat on the cold tile floor and pressed my forehead against my knees.

I knew.

I went to a pharmacy in Brooklyn. Somewhere anonymous. Somewhere no one would recognize Sofia Gomez-Barnes. I bought three tests and paid in cash and took the subway back.

I locked myself in the guest bathroom. The one Colin never used. The one with the window that looked out over the city.

All three tests came back the same.

I sat on the edge of the vanity and held one in my hand and did the math I already knew the answer to. Colin and I hadn't touched each other in over seven months. Not since before his last trip to see Bridget. Not since I'd stopped pretending.

This baby was Silas's.

I stared at the test for a long time. Two pink lines. Clear and definitive and completely undeniable.

Then I picked up my phone and called him.

He answered on the second ring. "Hey."

His voice was warm. Easy. Like hearing it was the most natural thing in the world.

"I need to tell you something," I said.

"Okay." I heard him moving. A door closing. Silence settling around him. "I'm listening."

I looked down at the test in my hand. The two lines blurred.

"I'm pregnant," I said quietly.

Silence.

Not the bad kind. Not shock or panic or regret. Just the pause of someone absorbing something enormous.

"Sofia," he said finally. His voice was rough. Thick. "Where are you?"

"Home."

"I'm coming to you right now."

"Silas—"

"Right now," he repeated. "Don't move. I'll be there in twenty minutes."

He hung up.

I sat on the vanity and waited. The test was still in my hand. I couldn't seem to put it down.

Twenty minutes later, I heard the elevator. Then footsteps. Then a knock.

I opened the door.

Silas stood in the hallway. His hair was messed up like he'd been running his hands through it. His eyes were bright and fierce and completely focused on me.

He stepped inside and pulled me against his chest. His arms came around me so tightly I couldn't breathe.

"Say it again," he whispered against my hair.

"I'm pregnant."

His whole body shuddered. Then he pulled back and cupped my face in his hands and looked at me like I was something precious. Breakable. Sacred.

"We're having a baby," he said.

I nodded.

He kissed me. Soft and careful and full of something I didn't have a name for. When he pulled back, his eyes were wet.

"I'm going to take care of you," he said. "Both of you. I promise."

I believed him.

We stood in the hallway of Colin's penthouse — the place I'd been suffocating for five years — and I felt something I hadn't felt in so long I'd forgotten what to call it.

Hope.
