Chapter 2

The word *wife* sits in the air between us. Heavy. Final. Like a door slamming shut.

Eli doesn't move. His hand stays on the armrest next to Paloma's. His mouth opens but nothing comes out. He looks at me like he's waiting for me to leave. Like I'm the one who showed up in the wrong place.

I don't leave.

"I've known Eli since we were ten," I say.

My voice sounds flat. Calm. I'm not trying to make it sound that way. It's just how it comes out. Paloma's smile shifts. Not gone. Just smaller. Tighter. She glances at Eli. He still doesn't speak.

"We grew up in the same group home in Seattle," I continue. "I've loved him for twenty years."

A woman at the next table lowers her phone. A man in a suit pauses mid-sip of his drink. The soft music keeps playing but the room feels quieter now.

"I wake up at four a.m. every morning," I say. "I make dumplings. I sell them. I did that so Eli could build his company without worrying about money. I worked every single day. I never asked him for anything except to marry me someday."

Eli finally moves. He reaches toward my arm. "Kiara," he says. His voice cracks on my name. "Please. Let's talk outside."

I don't step back. I just look at his hand hovering near my elbow. He doesn't touch me. His fingers curl into his palm and drop.

Paloma sets her glass down on the table. The crystal makes a sharp sound against the marble. Her jaw is tight now. Her perfect nails tap once against the armrest.

"I have scars on my legs," I say. I'm not talking to her. I'm not really talking to Eli either. I'm just saying it out loud because it's true. "Three years ago, some men came into my shop. They poured boiling broth on me because I wouldn't pay protection money. Eli cried when he saw the burns. He said he'd build a life where I'd never have to suffer again."

Eli's face goes white. "Kiara, stop."

"He promised he'd marry me," I say. "He said it every time I asked. He said soon. He said after the next funding round. He said when the company was stable. He said it last week."

Paloma stands up. Her chair scrapes against the floor. She's taller than me. Her silk blouse probably costs more than my rent. But her hands shake just a little when she smooths her hair.

"Eli," she says quietly. Her voice isn't smooth anymore. "What is she talking about?"

Eli looks at her. Then at me. Then at the floor. He doesn't answer.

"He's been sleeping in my bed," I say. "Every week he wasn't in Los Angeles. He comes home and eats my dumplings and tells me he loves me. He did that last Tuesday."

Paloma's breath catches. Just once. Her hand moves to the edge of the table like she needs it to stay upright.

The man in the suit is staring now. The woman at the next table has her phone up. I don't care.

I look down at my wrist. The bracelet catches the light from the chandelier above us. It's silver. Delicate. Eli gave it to me three years ago. He said it was designer. He said he saved up for it. He said I deserved something beautiful.

I unclasp it. My fingers don't shake. I hold it up between us.

"This is fake," I say.

Eli's eyes go wide. "Kiara—"

"I looked it up last night," I say. "The real version has a stamp on the clasp. This one doesn't. It's a knockoff. It costs thirty dollars online."

I drop it onto the table. It lands next to Paloma's crystal glass. The cheap metal clatters. Loud. Paloma flinches.

I look at Eli. His scar catches the light. The one he got protecting me when we were twelve. The one I believed in for twenty years.

"We're done," I say.

His face crumples. "Kiara, please. Let me explain—"

"There's nothing to explain," I say. "You married her. You lied to me. You gave me a fake bracelet and fake promises and I believed all of it."

"I love you," he says. His voice breaks. "I do. I—"

"No," I say. "You don't."

I turn around. My legs feel steady. My chest feels empty. I walk through the lobby. Past the leather chairs. Past the woman with her phone. Past the man in the suit. The glass doors slide open. The rain hits my face. Cold. Clean.

I don't look back.
