Chapter 3

I don't go back to the apartment right away. I sit in my car outside the hotel for a while. The rain drums on the windshield. My hands rest on the steering wheel. I watch the water blur the streetlights into soft gold smears.

Then I drive home.

The apartment is dark. I flip the light switch and everything looks the same. Eli's jacket on the chair. His shoes by the door. The coffee mug I left in the sink this morning. It all looks normal. Like nothing happened.

I walk to the bedroom and pull my duffel bag from the closet. It's the same one I brought when I moved in four years ago. Blue canvas. Fraying at the handles. I set it on the bed and start folding clothes.

I don't take much. A few shirts. Two pairs of jeans. My work apron. Socks. Underwear. I move through the drawers methodically. I don't cry. I don't feel anything except the need to be efficient.

My recipe notebook sits on the nightstand. It's small. Leather-bound. The edges are stained with flour and oil. Every dumpling recipe I've ever tested is in there. Notes in the margins. Adjustments. Measurements. I tuck it into the bag.

Then I open my wallet.

The note is folded into a small square. The paper is soft from years of handling. I unfold it carefully. The crayon is faded but I can still read it. Eli's handwriting when he was ten years old. Uneven letters. Crooked lines.

*I'm going to marry Kiara when we grow up.*

He wrote it the night after the group home incident. After the older boy split his eyebrow open. We were sitting on his bunk. He had a bandage taped across his forehead. He asked me for a crayon and a piece of paper. He wrote the note and handed it to me. He said, "So you know I mean it."

I believed him.

I hold the note for a long time. The apartment is silent except for the hum of the refrigerator. I could rip it up. Throw it away. Leave it on the counter for him to find.

But I don't.

I fold it back into its small square and return it to my wallet. Not because I still believe it. But because it's evidence. Proof that the boy who wrote it existed once. Even if the man who broke the promise doesn't deserve to be forgiven.

I zip the duffel bag. I walk through the apartment one more time. I don't take the bracelet he gave me. I left that on the hotel table. I don't take the framed photo of us at Pike Place Market. I don't take the blanket we bought together last winter.

I only take what I came with.

I close the door behind me and lock it. I slide my key under the gap at the bottom. I hear it hit the floor on the other side.

Then I leave.

---

I find a sublet studio across the city by morning. It's small. One room. A kitchenette in the corner. A bathroom with a shower that drips. The landlord doesn't ask questions. I pay first and last month in cash. He hands me the key and leaves.

I set my duffel bag on the floor. I sit on the edge of the bed. The mattress sags in the middle. The window overlooks a parking lot. It's not much. But it's mine.

I don't cry.

---

I change my phone number the next day. I go to the store. I buy a new SIM card. I transfer my contacts except for one. I don't bring Eli's number with me.

Then I go to work.

The dumpling shop is the same. The flour. The dough. The rhythm of folding and pinching and steaming. Dara comes in at eleven. She orders her usual. She asks if I'm okay. I say yes. She doesn't push.

I don't check my old voicemail. I don't look at my old email. I know Eli is trying to reach me. I can feel it the way you feel weather coming. But I don't need to hear it. His voice won't change what happened. His apologies won't undo the wedding video. His explanations won't make the bracelet real.

He made his choice. I'm making mine.

---

At night, I lie in the sagging bed in my new studio. The streetlight outside casts a yellow glow through the thin curtain. I think about the note in my wallet. The boy with the bandage on his forehead. The scar that never faded.

I think about the man in the hotel lobby. The one who couldn't speak when his wife said the word *wife* out loud. The one who let me work four a.m. shifts for twenty years while he built a life I wasn't part of.

They're the same person. But they're not.

I close my eyes. The shower drips in the bathroom. A car alarm goes off in the parking lot. The city hums outside my window.

I don't feel sad. I don't feel angry. I don't feel anything except tired.

And for the first time in twenty years, I fall asleep without waiting for someone to come home.
