Chapter 3

I woke before dawn with Buster's warm weight pressed against my side. For a moment—just one—I forgot. Then Solene stirred, and the memory of yesterday crashed back. Marina on the balcony. Declan's wolf catching her mid-fall. The arrangement he'd proposed over wine and candlelight like he was discussing crop rotation.

I got dressed in the dark. Jeans. A plain sweater. Nothing that screamed Luna making moves. Buster followed me to the door, his tail wagging hopefully.

"Not today either," I whispered, scratching behind his ears. "Stay."

The drive off pack territory took thirty minutes. I'd told Declan I was visiting a childhood friend in the next county—not technically a lie, since I hadn't specified which friend or why. He'd barely looked up from his coffee.

Elias Vance's office was small. Neat. The kind of place that didn't advertise. The nameplate on the door read simply: "Territorial Law."

He was older than I expected. Maybe sixty. Silver hair pulled back in a tight knot. Sharp eyes that took me in completely before I'd finished crossing the threshold.

"Luna Castillo," he said. Not a question.

"Just Isla, please."

He gestured to the chair across from his desk. "I know why you're here. I've represented three rejected mates in the past decade. All she-wolves. All Lunas. Two are still alive."

I sat down slowly. "What happened to the third?"

"Her pack Elders convinced her to accept a similar arrangement to what I suspect you've been offered. She lasted six months before her wolf went feral. They had to put her down."

Solene's growl vibrated through my ribs.

Elias opened a folder. "Pack law is clear. A formal rejection requires a witness of Beta rank or higher. The words must be spoken aloud in their entirety. The bond severs immediately. You will experience significant physical trauma. Your wolf may not survive."

He said it like he was reading a grocery list.

"But if she does survive," he continued, "you are entitled to territorial compensation. A percentage of pack assets. And you retain any property or titles held independently of your mate bond."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. "How long does the process take?"

"From formal rejection to final settlement? Three to six months. Longer if your mate contests. Which he will."

"How do you know?"

Elias smiled thinly. "Because powerful Alphas always do. They don't contest because they want you back. They contest because losing a Luna publicly damages their standing. It becomes about image. Not love."

I thought of Declan's face across the candlelit table. You're my Luna.

"I need financial documentation," Elias said. "Pack treasury records. Property deeds. Anything with both your names. Can you access them without raising suspicion?"

"I'm the Luna. I have access to everything."

"Then start copying. Quietly. I'll also need a forensic accountant. Someone who can trace hidden assets if—"

"Harper Thorne," I said. "I'm meeting her this afternoon."

Elias raised an eyebrow. "You work fast."

"I've had time to think."

I left his office with a folder of documents I didn't open until I was back in my car. Formal rejection templates. Asset division precedents. A checklist titled: "Preparing to Sever a Mate Bond."

Solene was silent. Waiting.

That evening, I requested a meeting with the Ironveil Pack Elders.

They convened in the Council chamber—a wood-paneled room that smelled like old leather and older authority. Five of them. All male. All older than my father.

Silas Mercer sat at the far end. I'd met him before at formal pack functions. He had kind eyes and a reputation for fairness.

I presented my account calmly. The Healer Wing. Marina's pregnancy. Declan's confession. The arrangement he'd proposed.

When I finished, the head Elder—Marcus Stone—sighed heavily.

"Luna Isla," he said. "We are deeply sympathetic to your distress. But you must understand—Alpha Declan has already briefed us. This woman, Marina Garza, is a rogue he showed mercy to. Her claims are... unstable."

"I saw him catch her," I said quietly. "I saw how his wolf held her. That wasn't mercy."

Another Elder spoke. "Even if the pup is his—and we are not confirming this—the alliance between Ironveil and Silvercrest cannot be jeopardized over a personal difficulty."

Personal difficulty.

Solene's growl was low. Dangerous.

"The alliance," I repeated.

"Your father built decades of peace on this union," Marcus said gently. "Two powerful packs, bound by the Moon Goddess's blessing. If you reject Alpha Declan now—publicly—Silvercrest will be forced to withdraw support. Trade routes will collapse. Territorial disputes will resurface. Good wolves will suffer."

He leaned forward. "We are asking you to consider what is best for the pack. Not just yourself."

I looked at each of them in turn. Their faces were serious. Concerned. Immovable.

Then I looked at Silas Mercer.

He held my gaze. Just for a beat. Something flickered there—recognition, maybe. Or warning. His eyes cut briefly to the door, then back to me.

A message. Clear as words: *You will get no help here.*

I stood. "Thank you for your time, Elders."

Marcus looked relieved. "We knew you would understand, Luna. You have always put the pack first."

I smiled. Polite. Empty. "Of course."

I left the Council chamber certain of one thing: institutional power would not save me.

***

The mind-link came that night.

*Isla.*

My father's voice. Calm. Measured. The voice that had governed Silvercrest for thirty years.

I was sitting on the bedroom floor with Buster's head in my lap. I closed my eyes.

*Father.*

*I've heard rumors,* he said carefully. *About difficulties between you and Alpha Declan.*

Difficulties. That was the word they were all using.

*The rumors are true,* I said.

A pause. Then: *The alliance matters, Isla. To both our packs. You understand what is at stake.*

He didn't say *accept it*. He didn't need to.

I felt the weight of it then—not just Declan, not just the Elders, but this. My own father. The man who'd taught me to believe the mate bond was sacred. Now asking me to swallow its desecration for territorial stability.

*I understand,* I said quietly.

Relief bled through the link. *Good. I knew you would. You've always been strong, Isla. Like your mother.*

The link dissolved.

I sat there in the dark, Buster's breathing steady against my leg, and understood exactly what I was fighting.

Not merely Declan.

The entire system that had taught me to call the bond sacred while treating it as a political instrument.

Solene stirred. Not a howl this time. Something colder.

Recognition. And beneath it, the first spark of something that would become rage.
