Chapter 4

The note arrived tucked inside my fertility consultation file—the one I'd left at the rental property I'd quietly secured two weeks ago, the one Declan didn't know existed yet.

*The security footage is archived for 90 days.*

Winona's handwriting. Small. Precise. No signature.

I sat on the edge of the unfurnished living room floor, Buster sprawled beside me, and read it three times. Then I pulled out my phone and added a single line to the encrypted document I'd been building with Elias: *Healer Wing security footage—contact Winona directly, desk schedule Tuesdays/Thursdays 2-6pm.*

I didn't text Winona. Didn't call. The note itself was risk enough.

But that evening, I memorized her desk schedule.

Marina started appearing three days later.

The first time, I was walking Buster through the pack house garden—early morning, when the grounds were usually empty. I rounded the corner by the rose beds and there she was.

Heavily pregnant. Unmistakably so. Her belly round beneath a thin cotton dress, her braid loose over one shoulder. She was sitting on the stone bench near the fountain, one hand resting on her stomach.

She looked up when she heard my footsteps. Smiled.

"Good morning, Luna," she said. Polite. Pleasant. Like we were neighbors exchanging pleasantries.

Solene went rigid.

I didn't respond. Just kept walking. Buster trotted ahead, oblivious.

But I smelled it. The pregnancy scent—warm, sweet, undeniable. And beneath it, faint but present, the ghost of cedar and smoke.

Declan's mark. On her skin.

I made it back to the suite before my hands started shaking.

***

The second time, Marina was in the Healer Wing corridor. Not hidden in the sealed VIP den anymore. Just—there. Walking slowly, one hand braced against the small of her back, heading toward the main consultation rooms.

Two pack members passed her. I watched their faces. The brief confusion. The recognition. The carefully neutral expressions that meant they'd registered exactly what they were seeing and had already decided not to comment.

Marina saw me watching from the far end of the hall. She didn't smile this time. Just held my gaze. Steady. Deliberate.

A claim. Performed for witnesses.

I turned and left before Solene could lunge.

***

The third time, I smelled her before I saw her.

I was in the pack house library—one of the few places I could still breathe—pulling territorial law precedents for Harper Thorne's asset analysis. The scent drifted through the doorway. Pregnancy. Cedar. Unmistakable.

Marina appeared in the entrance moments later. She didn't enter. Just stood there, framed in the doorway, her belly prominent, her expression serene.

"I didn't mean to disturb you," she said softly. "I was looking for the records room."

She wasn't looking for the records room. The records room was in the opposite wing.

"Down the hall," I said. My voice came out flat. Empty. "Take the left corridor past the Beta's office."

"Thank you, Luna." She turned to go, then paused. Looked back. "I hope you're well."

Solene snarled so loud I felt it in my teeth.

Marina left.

I sat there among the law books, my thumb pressed hard against my wrist, and understood exactly what she was doing.

She'd interpreted my silence as defeat. My absence of retaliation as surrender. And now she was testing boundaries—pushing further into pack spaces, letting her scent linger where it would be noticed, claiming territory one deliberate appearance at a time.

She thought she'd won.

I pulled out my phone and added another note to Elias's file: *Marina Garza—public appearances began [date]. Witnesses: [names]. Scent evidence: pack members can confirm.*

Every provocation. Documented.

***

Declan was unraveling.

It started small. Snapping at his Beta during a routine logistics meeting—I heard it through the closed office door, his voice sharp and impatient over something minor. The Beta emerged looking confused.

Then it was the late returns. Declan coming back to our shared quarters well after midnight, his scent layered with something that made Solene go absolutely still.

Not Marina's pregnancy scent. Something else. Stress. Exhaustion. And underneath it—faint, but unmistakable—the faintest undertone of her.

He'd been with her.

I said nothing. Just turned over in bed, my back to him, and listened to him move through the dark. The sound of his clothes hitting the floor. The shower running. The careful silence of a man trying not to wake someone he thought was sleeping.

When he finally slid into bed beside me, I kept my breathing steady. Even. Solene's snarl trapped behind my ribs.

He didn't touch me.

***

I started running.

Early mornings, before dawn, when the pack house was still quiet. I'd slip out with Buster, let Solene push to the surface just enough that my legs moved faster, stronger, and we'd run the forest borderlands until my lungs burned.

It was in motion that clarity came.

Not in the Council chamber. Not in Elias's office. Not in the careful, measured conversations with Harper about offshore accounts and hidden assets.

In motion. In the rhythm of feet against earth, breath against cold air, Solene's presence humming just beneath my skin.

It was on one of these runs—three miles out, deep in the pine forest where the border markers stood—that the full shape of my plan finally formed.

I stopped. Hands on my knees. Breathing hard. Buster circled back, panting.

Solene was silent. Listening.

I straightened slowly.

Declan thought he could manage this. Thought he could keep us both—the Luna who preserved his alliances, the hidden mate who carried his heir. Thought his Alpha authority and his careful lies would hold the center.

He was wrong.

Because the center wasn't holding. It was fracturing. Visibly. And all I had to do was stop trying to contain the fracture.

Let it spread.

Let Marina push. Let Declan scramble. Let the pack members whisper. Let the Elders pressure. Let my father's mind-link grow more insistent.

Let the entire structure crack under its own weight.

And when it finally shattered—when the scandal became too loud to suppress, when the lies became too obvious to deny—I would be ready.

With documentation. With witnesses. With legal precedent and financial evidence and a forensic accountant who could trace every hidden asset Declan thought he'd buried.

I would let him destroy himself.

And then I would walk away clean.

Solene stirred. Not a howl. Not yet.

Something colder. Sharper.

Recognition.

I turned and ran back toward the pack house, Buster at my heels, the plan settling into my bones like truth.
