Chapter 2

Marina moved before I understood what was happening.

She slid off the bed, stumbled past Declan, and crossed to the balcony door. Her hands shook as she fumbled with the latch.

"Marina." Declan's voice was sharp. Warning. "Stop."

She didn't stop.

The door swung open. Cool air rushed into the room, carrying the scent of pine and distant rain. Marina stepped onto the narrow balcony—barely more than a ledge, really, three stories above the Healer Wing's southern grounds.

"I said stop." Declan started forward.

Marina gripped the railing. Then, in one smooth motion, she climbed onto it.

"Tell her," Marina said. Her voice was steady now. Eerily calm. "Tell your Luna the truth, Declan. Or I jump."

My breath caught.

Below, I heard voices. Pack members on the grounds had noticed. Someone shouted. Movement scattered across the lawn like startled birds.

Declan froze mid-step. "Get down. Now."

"No." Marina's hands trembled on the railing, but her feet stayed planted. "I'm done being your secret. I'm done hiding. Tell her, or I'm done with all of it."

The wind caught her braid, pulling strands loose. She looked small up there. Fragile. Her belly round beneath her thin sweater.

"Marina, please." Declan's Alpha tone was gone. His voice cracked. "Please. Think of the pup."

"I am thinking of the pup!" Her shout was raw. Desperate. "What kind of life is this? Hidden away like something shameful? You won't even say my name in front of her!"

More voices below. I heard the Healer Wing doors bang open. Footsteps running.

Declan took another step toward the balcony. Slow. Hands raised. "Okay. Okay. I'll tell her. Just—get down. Please."

Marina looked at him. Then at me.

"You promise?"

"I promise," Declan said. "Just get down."

She shook her head. "You've promised me things before."

Then she leaned forward.

I don't remember moving. One moment I was standing by the door. The next I was on the balcony, reaching—

But Declan was faster.

He shifted mid-lunge. His wolf burst through skin and bone in a crack of transformation so violent the balcony railing shook. He caught Marina mid-fall, his massive jaws closing gentle around her waist, his body twisting in the air to take the impact.

They hit the ground together.

I stared down at them. Declan's wolf—huge, silver-grey, utterly unmistakable—cradled Marina against his chest. She was sobbing. Her hands clutched his fur. And he—

He nuzzled her. Soft. Protective. The way a wolf comforts his mate.

Below, at least a dozen pack members stood frozen. Watching.

Winona was among them. Her face turned up toward the balcony. Toward me.

Solene howled.

Not grief. Not yet. This was the sound of something breaking clean. The sound of a truth too large to deny.

I turned and walked back into the room. My legs felt distant. Someone else's legs.

Behind me, I heard Declan shift back. Heard Marina's broken voice, his low murmur in response. Then footsteps on the stairs.

He appeared in the doorway moments later. Human again. Breathing hard. His shirt torn from the shift, his eyes wild.

"Isla—"

"Don't," I said quietly.

He stopped.

I looked at him. At this man whose scent had called to Solene since my awakening. Whose mark I carried on my neck. Whose pup I'd been planning mere hours ago.

"Tell me," I said. "Everything. Now."

Declan closed his eyes. When he opened them again, something in his face had changed. The performance was gone.

"Marina and I were together before my wolf awakened," he said. "It was real. I loved her. Then at your Come of Age Ceremony, I smelled you, and—the bond was there. Undeniable. The Moon Goddess chose you."

His voice was flat. Factual.

"I never rejected her," he continued. "I couldn't. It felt—wrong. Like cutting off a part of myself. So I... kept both."

My thumb pressed against my wrist. Hard enough to bruise.

"The pup is mine," Declan said. "Marina told me three months ago. I've been trying to figure out how to—how to manage it."

"Manage it," I repeated.

"Yes." He stepped forward. "Isla, I know how this looks. But I never wanted to hurt you. You're my Luna. My mate. The Moon Goddess chose us. What Marina and I had—it was before. It doesn't change what you and I are."

Solene's howl turned to something darker. Colder.

"It doesn't?" I asked softly.

Declan reached for my hand. I didn't pull away. Couldn't seem to move at all.

"Let's go home," he said. "Please. We can talk there. Privately. I'll explain everything."

I looked down at his hand holding mine. At the familiar shape of his fingers.

"Alright," I heard myself say. "Let's go home."

The Alpha suite was exactly as I'd left it that morning. Buster greeted us at the door, tail wagging, oblivious. I scratched his ears automatically.

Declan moved through the space like he was arranging a stage. He lit candles. Poured wine. Set out bread and cheese on the small table by the window—my favorite.

When everything was ready, he gestured to the chair across from him.

"Sit. Please."

I sat.

He poured wine into both glasses. Slid one toward me. "I've been thinking about this for months. How to tell you. How to make you understand."

"I'm listening," I said.

Declan leaned back. "My father kept a mate. Before my mother. During my mother, actually. In another state. Hidden. He supported her for decades."

He said it casually. Like he was describing pack protocol.

"My mother knew," he continued. "Eventually. And she made a choice. She stayed. She understood that powerful Alphas—that the demands on us—sometimes we need... arrangements."

My wine sat untouched.

"I'm proposing an arrangement," Declan said. "You remain my marked Luna. My public mate. The alliances stay intact. Silvercrest and Ironveil remain strong. You keep your title. Your position. Everything you've built here."

He reached across the table. "Marina and the pup relocate to a cabin on neutral territory. Unmarked. Unacknowledged publicly. But supported. Comfortable. Safe."

"And what is Marina to you in this arrangement?" I asked quietly.

Declan didn't hesitate. "The mother of my heir. Nothing more."

Nothing more.

Solene went utterly silent.

"I don't love her," Declan continued. "Not like I did before. The bond with you—the Goddess's bond—that's sacred. That's forever. Marina is... a responsibility. A consequence I'm managing. But you, Isla. You're my Luna."

He smiled. Warm. Sincere.

"I'm asking you to be strong," he said. "The way my mother was strong. The way great Lunas have always been strong. To put the pack first. Our alliance. Our future."

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I stood.

"I need time," I said. "To consider."

Relief flooded his face. "Of course. Take all the time you need."

I walked to the bedroom. Closed the door.

Behind it, I pressed my back against the wood and slid down until I was sitting on the floor.

Buster padded over, resting his head in my lap.

Solene's howl finally came.

It tore through me—not grief, not yet—but recognition. Cold. Irreversible. Final.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and understood, with perfect clarity, exactly what I was going to do.
