Chapter 4

I called Diana at midnight.

She picked up on the first ring. That's Diana Reeves — she doesn't sleep when there's blood in the water, and she'd already sensed it. I didn't waste time on preamble.

"I need a full forensic audit. Every document Donovan Carr has ever signed under the Collins Family Trust. Every transfer, every authorization, every amendment. I want it mapped by morning."

A beat. Then: "I'll have my team assembled in an hour."

"I'll be reviewing alongside you."

Another beat. Shorter this time. "I'll set up the secure portal."

That was it. That's why I kept Diana Reeves on retainer for eleven years.

---

The study got cold around 1 a.m. I didn't notice until my fingers started moving slower across the keyboard. I got up, found the cardigan I kept on the back of the chair, put it on, and sat back down.

Diana's team had been thorough. The documents came through in clean, organized folders — chronological, color-coded, flagged in three tiers of severity. I could have let her summarize it. She would have done it perfectly.

I read every page myself.

Not because I didn't trust her. Because I needed to know. I needed to sit with every signature, every authorization, every date — feel the full shape of what I had allowed to happen. What I had built, and handed to him, and never once questioned.

The first transfers were small. Reasonable. Operational expenses, travel costs, the kind of line items that disappear into the noise of a large estate's budget. I'd approved most of them without looking twice. I remembered that. I made myself remember it.

Then, around 2016, something shifted. The amounts grew. The justifications got more creative. A "consulting fee" to a shell company I didn't recognize. A "property assessment" for a building we didn't own. A "security retainer" that had no corresponding contractor on record.

I sat back.

I pressed one hand flat against the desk.

He'd been doing this for years. Not recklessly — carefully. The way you do something when you're very sure no one is watching.

By 3 a.m., Diana and I had the complete picture. Every access point. Every extraction. Every door I had opened for Donovan Carr, and every door he had quietly, methodically pried wider when my back was turned.

I closed the last document.

I sat in the dark and I let myself feel it — just for a moment. The specific weight of being wrong about someone you built. The particular cold of it.

Then I straightened my cufflinks.

I had everything I needed.

---

Down the hall, behind a closed door, Donovan was still awake.

I didn't know that then. I found out later, from Margaret's records and a phone log Diana pulled the next morning. But I can picture it clearly enough.

He'd have been sitting on the edge of the bed in the guest suite — the one I'd moved him to after I walked past him in the hallway, without a word, without a door slammed, which would have scared him more than any of it. He'd have been turning his phone over in his hands. Thinking.

Donovan Carr was many things. Stupid was not one of them. He knew I'd slapped him, and he knew I'd fired Jeffrey, and he knew I'd wheeled Lacey out of that room without looking at him once. He understood what those things meant individually.

What he didn't understand — what his particular brand of narcissism made structurally impossible for him to understand — was that they weren't reactions. They were the first moves.

He convinced himself, sometime around 2 a.m., that I was a mother in shock. That I would rage, and then I would calculate, and then I would decide that the scandal of exposing him was worse than the scandal of keeping him. That I would protect my family's name by protecting his position in it.

He'd watched me make that calculus before. With board members. With partners. With anyone whose mess threatened to become public.

He thought he knew how I worked.

He booked the Miami flight at 2:47 a.m.

---

Lylah heard him moving around. She came to the doorway of the master wing — still in Lacey's cashmere robe, the dove-grey one from Milan — and he told her.

The yacht. Miami. Their real life, beginning now.

She'd already chosen the name for the boat. She'd told him weeks ago, laughing, lying across the bed in the middle of the afternoon while Lacey was in physical therapy downstairs. She'd said it like it was already hers.

Now she went to the back of the wardrobe and took out the bracelet. The one she'd bought herself the morning after the staircase. She turned it on her wrist in the mirror, watching it catch the light.

She looked satisfied.

She looked like a woman who believed she had won.

Down the hall, I closed my laptop, stood up, and went to check on my daughter.

Lacey was asleep. Her hands were folded over the blanket, fingertips pressed together even in sleep, like her body had learned to brace itself even when her mind had finally let go.

I stood in the doorway for a long moment.

Then I went to bed.

I had a call to make to Miami in the morning.
