Chapter 5

Diana called me at 6:47 a.m.

'It's filed,' she said. 'All of it. The freeze order, the trust removal, the full revocation package. Judge Harmon signed off at six-fifteen.'

I was already dressed. Standing at the window with my coffee going cold in my hand, watching the light come up over the water.

'And the timing?' I said.

'Executable on your signal. The moment you walk through those doors, we move.'

I set the coffee down.

'Good.'

I let myself take one slow breath. Not relief. Not satisfaction. Not yet. Just air, filling my lungs, the way you breathe before you step into a room where you've already decided every outcome.

Then I picked up my bag and walked out to the car.

---

The jet was wheels-up by seven-thirty. I sat alone in the cabin with the court documents open on my lap, not because I needed to review them — Diana's work was airtight, I knew that — but because I wanted to hold them. Feel the weight of them. Every page was a door closing on something I had built with my own hands and watched get used against my daughter.

I read every line anyway.

The flight to Miami was two hours and fourteen minutes. I spent most of it thinking about Lacey's hands. The way she pressed her fingertips together even in sleep. The way she'd said *it was just an accident, Mom* in that soft, rehearsed voice, like someone had spent weeks teaching her the lines.

I folded the documents back into the envelope.

I looked out the window at the flat blue Atlantic below us.

Two hours and fourteen minutes was enough time to grieve. After that, I was done.

---

Jack Jordan's brokerage sat on the water in Coconut Grove — all glass and pale stone and the kind of quiet that costs money to maintain. The kind of place where nine-figure transactions happened in hushed, carpeted rooms with chilled water and very good lighting.

Donovan would have loved it.

I stood outside for exactly three seconds. Diana was at my left shoulder. Four members of her legal team fanned out behind us, each one carrying a copy of the court order in a sealed envelope.

I pushed open the door.

---

I heard him before I saw him.

His laugh. That easy, practiced laugh he deployed in rooms full of people he needed to impress. I'd heard it at a hundred Collins family events. At board dinners. At charity galas where he'd stood beside Lacey with his hand at her waist and smiled for photographers.

I followed the sound.

The private viewing room was through a set of glass doors off the main gallery. Through them, I could see the assembled group — Jack Jordan at the head of the table, smooth and unhurried, a presentation screen behind him showing a rendering of the yacht. A few other buyers and their representatives arranged around the room, the way these things always went. Everyone performing wealth for everyone else.

And Donovan, at the center of it. Jacket perfect. Posture easy. One hand resting on the table, the other lifting a glass of water, the Cartier watch catching the light on his wrist.

Lacey had wrapped that watch in silver paper. She'd cried a little when he opened it.

I pushed through the glass doors.

The room went quiet the way rooms go quiet when something shifts and no one can name it yet.

Jack Jordan looked up. His eyes found me, moved to Diana, moved to the four people behind her, and in about two seconds I watched him understand exactly what kind of morning this was going to be.

Donovan turned.

I watched his face. The smile stayed on for a half-second longer than it should have — muscle memory, the performance running on its own momentum — and then it simply stopped. Like a power cut. Everything behind his eyes went very still and very fast at the same time.

I walked to the transaction desk.

Diana set the court order down in front of Jack Jordan. Flat. Clean. No drama.

'This transaction will not be completing today,' I said. My voice came out measured. Almost pleasant. 'Mr. Carr's access to the Collins Family Trust has been permanently revoked, effective as of this morning.'

I looked at Jack Jordan when I said it. Not at Donovan.

Jack Jordan looked at the document. He looked at Diana. He picked up the court order and read the first page with the focused attention of a man who understood immediately that his only correct move was to cooperate completely.

At the table, Donovan's phone was in his hand. His thumb was still hovering over the authorization screen.

The wire transfer screen returned an error code.

The room was very quiet.

I watched Donovan look at the error code. I watched him look at his phone. I watched him look at me.

The watch on his wrist caught the light one more time.

I let the silence hold.
