Chapter 4

The email came on a Tuesday morning. Short. Professional. Cold.

*Dear Ms. Mendoza, After careful consideration, we've decided to pursue another designer for the Tribeca project. Thank you for your time.*

I read it twice. Then I set my phone down and stared at the fabric swatches spread across my desk. The Tribeca project was supposed to be a flagship piece. Six months of work. Preliminary sketches. Mood boards. Hours of client meetings where they'd loved everything I showed them.

Gone.

My assistant knocked. "Oaklee? The Hendersons just called. They're canceling Friday's consultation."

I looked up. "Did they say why?"

She hesitated. "They said they were going in a different direction."

Two clients in one morning. I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

"Get me the Henderson file," I said. "And pull up the restaurant redesign. The one for Marchand."

"The French place in Midtown?"

"That one."

She left. I sat very still and thought about patterns. About timing. About the kind of person who would whisper poison into the ears of my clients.

Gracelynn.

I picked up my phone and called Sandra.

"Two clients just canceled," I said. "No explanation. Just gone."

Sandra swore softly. "She's going after your business."

"I know."

"Do you want me to—"

"No." My voice was firm. "I'm handling this myself."

Sandra was quiet for a moment. "Okay. But document everything. If this escalates, we'll need it."

I hung up and opened my laptop. The Marchand redesign was ambitious. A complete overhaul of a historic Midtown restaurant space. The client was demanding. The timeline was brutal. But the work was good. The best I'd ever done.

I spent the next three days refining every detail. The lighting plan. The custom millwork. The way the space would flow from the bar to the dining room like a conversation. I didn't sleep much. I didn't tell Desmond what I was working on. I just worked.

On Friday, I walked into Marchand with my presentation boards and my tablet and my carefully rehearsed pitch. The client sat across from me, arms crossed. Skeptical.

I showed him everything.

When I finished, he leaned back in his chair and studied me. "This is exceptional."

"Thank you."

"I heard some things," he said. "About your firm. About you."

I met his eyes. "What did you hear?"

"That you're a vanity project. That your husband bankrolls everything. That you're difficult to work with."

I didn't flinch. "And what do you think?"

He gestured at the boards. "I think whoever told me that was lying."

I smiled. Just a little. "Then let's move forward."

He signed the contract that afternoon.

Two weeks later, Architectural Digest called. They wanted to feature the Marchand project in their fall issue. A six-page spread. My name in print.

I stood in my studio and held the phone and felt something in my chest expand.

My assistant burst through the door. "Oaklee! The Hendersons just called. They want to reschedule. And the Tribeca clients emailed. They're asking if you're still available."

I set the phone down. "Tell them I'll check my schedule."

She grinned. "You're going to make them wait, aren't you?"

"A little."

That evening, Desmond came home late. I was on the terrace with a glass of wine, watching the city lights. He sat beside me and took my hand.

"I heard about Marchand," he said.

"Did you?"

"And Architectural Digest."

I looked at him. "Your PR team works fast."

He smiled. Just a little. "I'm proud of you."

"I didn't ask you to fix it."

"I know." He lifted my hand and pressed it to his lips. "That's why I'm proud."

I leaned into him. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and held me there.

"She tried to destroy me," I said quietly.

"She failed."

I closed my eyes. "This time."

"Every time," he said. "Because you're better than her. You always have been."

I wanted to believe him. And for the first time in weeks, I almost did.

The next morning, Desmond's executive assistant called me. Her voice was bright. Amused.

"Mrs. Knight? Mr. Knight asked me to let you know that the Architectural Digest issue has been framed and hung in his office."

I blinked. "What?"

"Right next to Arlo's drawings. He said to file it under 'Oaklee.' He said you'd know what it means."

I felt something warm spread through my chest. "Thank you."

I hung up and sat very still.

Desmond didn't need to say it. The frame said everything.

Meanwhile, across the city, Lawrence Corp was dying.

The audit Desmond had ordered came back with devastating results. Years of creative accounting. Undisclosed liabilities. Tax irregularities that would take months to untangle. Desmond's legal team shared the findings with the appropriate regulatory agencies. Quietly. Efficiently.

Within days, Lawrence Corp's credit lines were frozen. Investors withdrew. The family's old-money veneer began visibly cracking.

Kolton watched his inheritance disintegrate in real time.

And he blamed me.

The texts started coming daily. Then hourly.

*You did this.*

*You destroyed my family.*

*I just wanted to talk to you.*

I forwarded every single one to Sandra. She documented them meticulously.

Then Kolton started showing up outside my studio. Standing on the sidewalk. Watching. Waiting.

My assistant saw him first. "Oaklee, there's a man outside. He's been there for an hour."

I looked out the window. Kolton stood across the street, hands in his pockets. Staring up at my building.

I called Desmond.

"He's outside my studio," I said.

Desmond's voice went cold. "I'm sending Victor."

"Who's Victor?"

"My head of security. He'll be there in ten minutes. Don't go outside."

"I wasn't planning to."

Victor arrived in eight minutes. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and moved with the kind of precision that suggested military training. He crossed the street and spoke to Kolton. I couldn't hear the conversation. But I saw Kolton's face go pale. He left.

Victor came upstairs. "Mrs. Knight. I'll be stationed outside until further notice."

"That's not necessary."

"Mr. Knight believes it is."

I looked at him. He looked back. Unblinking.

"Fine," I said.

That evening, Desmond held me close and said nothing. He didn't need to.

Kolton was unraveling.

And we both knew it was only going to get worse.
