Chapter 5

The message came through my business email. Formal. Careful.

*Ms. Mendoza, My name is Felicity Bishop. I believe we have a mutual acquaintance. I have information you'll want to hear. Would you be available to meet?*

I read it three times. Felicity Bishop. Nathaniel's wife. The woman Gracelynn had betrayed just as thoroughly as she'd betrayed me.

I called Sandra first.

"Felicity Bishop reached out," I said. "She wants to meet."

Sandra was quiet for a moment. "Do you trust her?"

"I don't know her."

"Then be careful. But Oaklee? If she has evidence about Gracelynn, you need to hear it."

I agreed to meet at a café in the West Village. Quiet. Neutral. Public enough to be safe.

Felicity was already there when I arrived. She sat at a corner table, back to the wall, hands wrapped around a coffee cup she hadn't drunk from. She was beautiful in the way expensive maintenance makes women beautiful. But her eyes were tired.

I sat down. She looked at me for a long moment.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

"Thank you for reaching out."

We were both careful. Both wary. Both women who had learned the hard way that trust was earned in inches.

"I heard what Gracelynn's been doing to you," Felicity said. "The smear campaign. The lies. I'm sorry."

I said nothing.

She reached into her bag and pulled out a folder. She set it on the table between us. "I've been documenting my husband's affair with Gracelynn for three years. I didn't know what I was going to do with it. But then I heard she was coming after you. And I thought—" She paused. "I thought maybe it was time someone told the truth."

I opened the folder.

Photographs. Timestamped. Gracelynn leaving Nathaniel's apartment at two in the morning. Receipts from hotels. Text messages. Medical records from an abortion clinic dated five years ago.

I looked up. "She was pregnant."

"Yes." Felicity's voice was steady. "She told Nathaniel it was his. She wanted him to leave me. When he refused, she terminated the pregnancy and moved on. But not before she made sure everyone thought she was the victim."

I studied the photograph of Gracelynn leaving the apartment. Her face was visible. Clear. Unmistakable.

"Why are you giving this to me?" I asked.

Felicity met my eyes. "Because I'm tired of watching her destroy people and walk away clean. And because I think you're the only person who'll actually use it."

I closed the folder. "Thank you for trusting me with this."

She nodded. "I'm filing for divorce next week. My lawyers have copies of everything. But I wanted you to have this first."

We sat in silence for a moment. Two women who had both been betrayed. Both choosing to rise instead of being buried.

"If you need anything," I said quietly, "call me."

She smiled. Just a little. "Same."

I left the café with the folder in my bag and something new in my chest. Not just anger. Purpose.

That evening, the news broke.

*Lawrence Corp Files for Bankruptcy.*

I was in the kitchen when Desmond showed me the headline on his phone. I read it twice. Then I set the phone down.

"How long?" I asked.

"The filing went through this afternoon. The family home is already listed for sale."

I thought about Mrs. Lawrence storming into my penthouse. About Kolton standing outside my studio. About the roses in the hallway.

"Good," I said.

Desmond pulled me close. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.

Kolton went silent after that. No texts. No calls. No appearances outside my building.

Sandra flagged it immediately. "This is worse," she said. "When they go quiet, they're planning something."

I told Desmond. He called Victor.

"Double her detail," he said. "Discreetly. I don't want her to know."

But I knew. I saw the second car that started following me to the studio. The way Victor's team positioned themselves outside every building I entered.

I didn't argue. I just let them do their job.

Two days later, my phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.

*You'll regret this.*

I forwarded it to Sandra. Then I deleted it.

That night, Desmond found me on the terrace. I was holding a glass of wine I hadn't touched. He sat beside me and took my hand.

"Victor thinks Kolton's planning something," he said quietly.

"I know."

"I won't let him touch you."

I looked at him. His jaw was tight. His eyes were dark.

"I know," I said again.

He pressed his forehead to mine. "I mean it, Oaklee. I will burn everything to the ground before I let him hurt you."

I believed him.

The next morning, Gracelynn made her move.

She tipped off the press. Scheduled her performance for noon outside Knight Industries headquarters in Midtown. The most visible stage she could find.

Desmond's PR team alerted him before the cameras even arrived.

He called me. "She's staging something outside my building."

"I know," I said. "I'm coming down."

"Oaklee—"

"I'm coming down."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I'll meet you in the lobby."

I grabbed Felicity's folder. I grabbed my phone. And I walked out the door.

It was time to end this.
