Chapter 1

The penthouse still smelled like fresh paint and new beginnings. I stood in the bedroom, holding my father's old watch in my palm. The weight of it was familiar. Comforting. I opened the top drawer of the bedside table and placed it inside, right next to the stack of Arlo's crayon drawings that I couldn't bear to throw away.

"Mama! Mama, look!"

I turned. Arlo came toddling through the doorway, clutching a stuffed elephant that was supposed to be blue but was actually orange. Behind him, Desmond appeared, barefoot and rolled-sleeve perfect, carrying a box of my design books under one arm.

"He found Blue," Desmond said. His voice was warm. Amused. "Under the sofa. Apparently that's where Blue lives now."

I smiled. "Blue lives everywhere."

Arlo dropped the elephant and ran to me. I scooped him up. He smelled like apple juice and baby shampoo. I pressed my face into his hair and felt something in my chest settle. This was real. This penthouse. This man. This child. I had built this life from the ashes of the old one, and it was mine.

The doorbell rang.

Desmond set the box down. "That'll be the movers. I'll get it."

I nodded and carried Arlo to the window. The Manhattan skyline stretched out before us, all glass and steel and afternoon light. Arlo pressed his hands to the glass. "Big," he said seriously.

"Very big," I agreed.

Behind me, I heard the door open. Then silence. Not the easy silence of movers arriving. Something else.

I turned.

Desmond stood in the doorway, his body angled slightly to block the entrance. His posture was relaxed, but I knew him well enough to read the tension in his shoulders. And then I heard the voice.

"I just need five minutes. Please. I drove all the way here."

My blood went cold.

I set Arlo down gently. "Go find Blue, baby."

He toddled off, oblivious. I walked toward the door. Desmond glanced back at me, his expression unreadable. Then he stepped aside.

Kolton Lawrence stood in the hallway, holding a bouquet of roses. Red ones. The kind he used to buy me when we were together. His hair was perfect. His smile was practiced. He looked at me like no time had passed at all.

"Oaklee," he said. His voice was soft. Wounded. "I've been trying to reach you."

I said nothing. My hands were steady at my sides.

"I know I messed up," he continued. He took a step forward. Desmond didn't move, but something in the air shifted. Kolton stopped. "I know I hurt you. But I've had five years to think about it. About us. And I—"

"Excuse me."

Desmond's voice cut through the hallway like a blade. Quiet. Calm. Absolute.

Kolton blinked. "I'm sorry, who—"

"I'm her husband."

The words landed like a verdict. Kolton's face went blank. His eyes flicked to me, then back to Desmond. He opened his mouth. Closed it.

Desmond stepped fully into the doorway. He was still barefoot. Still wearing the towel low around his waist from the shower he'd just taken. Water ran down his chest in slow, deliberate lines. He looked at Kolton the way you might look at something small and inconvenient on the bottom of your shoe.

"You drove all the way here," Desmond said. "That's unfortunate. Because my wife doesn't want to see you. She didn't want to see you five years ago. She doesn't want to see you now. And if you show up at my door again, you won't be standing in a hallway having a conversation. You'll be having a very different conversation with building security and my attorneys. Are we clear?"

Kolton's face flushed. "You don't understand—"

"I understand perfectly." Desmond's voice didn't rise. It didn't need to. "You had something you didn't deserve. You lost it. And now you're here because you finally realized what you threw away. But she's not yours anymore. She never will be again."

He stepped back and closed the door. The roses hit the hallway floor with a soft, pathetic thud.

I stood very still.

Desmond turned to me. His eyes searched my face. "Are you okay?"

I nodded. But I wasn't sure it was true.

He crossed the space between us in two strides and pulled me close. His hand came up to cup the back of my head. He pressed his lips to my temple and held me there, steady and warm and unmovable.

"He's nothing," Desmond said quietly. "He was nothing before. He's less than nothing now."

I closed my eyes. I wanted to believe him. But Kolton had found me. He had shown up at my door with roses and a speech, like the last five years hadn't happened. Like I hadn't rebuilt myself from the ground up. Like I was still the girl who loved him.

I wasn't that girl anymore.

But the fact that he thought I was—that shook me more than I wanted to admit.

That evening, after Arlo was asleep, Desmond and I sat on the terrace. The city spread out below us, all light and noise and movement. I held a glass of wine I wasn't drinking. Desmond sat beside me, his hand resting on my knee.

"Tell me," he said.

I looked at him. "Tell you what?"

"What he did. What they did."

I took a breath. I hadn't talked about this in years. Not the full shape of it. But Desmond was watching me with that patient, unshakable focus he had, and I realized I wanted him to know.

So I told him. I told him about Gracelynn. About how she played fragile and helpless until Kolton couldn't see anything else. About the night I walked in and saw them together, and how Kolton looked me in the eye and tried to convince me I was imagining it. About how I left with my dignity intact but my heart in pieces.

Desmond listened without interrupting. When I finished, he was quiet for a long moment. Then he took my hand and pressed it to his lips.

"Thank you for telling me," he said.

He didn't promise to fix it. He didn't say it would be okay. But the look in his eyes told me everything I needed to know.

Kolton had made a mistake coming here.

And Desmond Knight didn't forgive mistakes.
