Chapter 2

The call came three days after Kolton showed up at my door.

I was in my home office, reviewing fabric samples for a client project. Arlo was with the nanny in the playroom. Desmond was at Knight Industries. The phone buzzed on my desk. Unknown number.

I almost didn't answer.

But something told me I should. So I did.

"Oaklee." The voice was bright. Sweet. Familiar in a way that made my stomach turn. "It's been so long."

Gracelynn Watkins.

I said nothing. My hand tightened around the phone.

"I heard Kolton went to see you," she continued. Her tone was light. Conversational. "I just wanted to call and… you know. Check in. Make sure you're handling it okay."

I still said nothing.

The sweetness in her voice curdled. "You could at least let him down gently, Oaklee. He's been through a lot. His company's struggling. His mother's a mess. And you just… moved on. Like none of it mattered."

"Is there something you need, Gracelynn?"

My voice was calm. Flat.

She laughed. It was sharp. "There it is. That tone. You always thought you were better than everyone, didn't you? Better than me. Better than Kolton. But you're not. You just found someone richer."

"Are you finished?"

"You abandoned him," she said. Her voice rose. "You walked away when he needed you. And now you're living in some penthouse with a billionaire and acting like you earned it. But we both know the truth, don't we? You didn't earn anything. You just—"

I hung up.

My hand was steady. My breathing was even. But my chest felt tight.

I set the phone down. Picked it up again. Dialed.

"Sandra Cho."

"It's Oaklee. I need you to document something."

Sandra was my attorney. Sharp, efficient, and fiercely loyal. I'd hired her years ago, before Desmond's money was ever part of my life. She listened while I recounted the call. Every word. Every inflection.

"Got it," she said. "I'll file cease-and-desist notices against both of them. Lawrence and Watkins. And Oaklee? Document every contact from here on out. Texts, calls, everything. If this escalates, we'll need it."

"Understood."

I hung up. Then I called Desmond.

He picked up on the first ring. "What's wrong?"

I told him. He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "You called Sandra first."

"Yes."

"Good." There was something in his voice. Approval. Pride. "I'll be home in an hour. Don't answer any calls you don't recognize."

"I won't."

He paused. "Oaklee."

"Yes?"

"You did the right thing. Hanging up. Calling Sandra. All of it."

I closed my eyes. "Thank you."

When he got home, he found me on the terrace. I was holding a glass of water I hadn't drunk. He sat beside me and pulled me close. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.

Later that evening, after Arlo was asleep, Desmond made two calls. The first was to his legal team, briefing them on Sandra's cease-and-desist filings. The second was to his CFO.

"I want a full financial audit of Lawrence Corp," he said. His voice was calm. Clinical. "Quiet. Thorough. Every irregularity documented. No public announcement. Just send me the report when it's done."

I watched him from the doorway. He glanced up and met my eyes. He didn't smile. But something in his expression told me everything I needed to know.

Kolton had made a mistake.

And Desmond Knight didn't forgive mistakes.

Two days later, I was in the living room with Arlo when the doorbell rang. I frowned. We weren't expecting anyone.

I walked to the door and checked the monitor. A woman stood in the hallway. Older. Expensively dressed. Her face was tight with anger.

Mrs. Lawrence.

I didn't open the door. I called down to the lobby. "How did she get up here?"

The concierge sounded flustered. "She said she was family, Mrs. Knight. I'm so sorry. I'll send security—"

"Do that."

I hung up. But before I could step away, the door flew open. Mrs. Lawrence had somehow overridden the lock. She stormed into the living room, her eyes wild.

"You," she hissed. "You destroyed my son."

I stood very still. Arlo was in the playroom. The nanny was with him. I kept my voice low. "You need to leave."

"He loved you," she said. Her voice was shaking. "He gave you everything. And you threw it away for this." She gestured around the penthouse. "For money. For status. You're nothing but a gold-digging—"

She raised her hand.

I didn't flinch. But I didn't have to.

Desmond appeared in the doorway.

He didn't run. He didn't shout. He just walked into the room, his presence filling the space like a cold front. Mrs. Lawrence froze. Her hand was still raised. Desmond looked at her the way you might look at something that had crawled out from under a rock.

"Put your hand down," he said quietly.

She did.

"You have sixty seconds to leave this penthouse," he continued. His voice was barely above a whisper. "If you're still here when security arrives, I will have you arrested for trespassing and attempted assault. And then I will ensure that every business connection your family still has in this city evaporates. Are we clear?"

Mrs. Lawrence's face went white. "You can't—"

"I can." He stepped closer. "And if you approach my wife again—if you call her, text her, or so much as look in her direction—you will discover exactly how far I'm willing to go to protect her. Now get out."

She left. The door slammed behind her.

Desmond turned to me. His eyes searched my face. "Did she touch you?"

"No."

He pulled me close. His hand came up to cup the back of my head. He held me there, steady and warm and unmovable.

"She won't come back," he said quietly.

I believed him.
