Chapter 5

The cast went on a little after midnight. White, heavy, still warm from the wrap. The doctor said something about six weeks, maybe eight, and I nodded like I was listening. I wasn't. I was thinking about the tile. About Rosa's hand on my back. About the word Brandon never said to me, not once, in that whole ambulance ride.

They put me in a private room on the fourth floor. Quiet. Dark, except for the thin line of light under the door. I lay there a long time without moving, my arm propped on a pillow, my other hand resting flat on my stomach where there was nothing left to protect.

I thought I'd cry. I didn't.

Somewhere around one in the morning, I picked up the hospital phone and dialed a number I hadn't used in four years.

Professor Hoffman answered on the second ring, her voice rough with sleep but instantly awake once she heard mine. "Anna Rivera." Not a question. A fact, like she'd been waiting for it.

"Professor. I'm sorry to call so late."

"Don't apologize. Talk."

So I did. I told her everything, flat and fast, the way you give a deposition — the blood draws, the wire transfers, the deed, the fall, my arm. I didn't tell her about the pregnancy. I couldn't make my mouth do that yet.

She didn't interrupt once. When I finished, there was a pause, just long enough for me to hear her breathing on the other end.

"Tell me what you need," she said.

I closed my eyes. Four years, and no one had asked me that. Not once.

"A forensic accountant," I said. "Someone who can trace transfers through shell accounts. And I need it to start now, before anything gets moved again."

"I know exactly who to call. He owes me a favor from 2015. Give me ten minutes."

She called back at 12:47. A man named Walter picked up on the third ring, alert, like he did this kind of work at midnight often. "Annabelle already briefed me," he said. "Send me what you have. I'll start tonight."

I hung up and looked at the cast on my arm, white in the dark. Then I dialed the third number.

Archer answered on the first ring.

"Anna." Just my name. Nothing else. Like he'd had the phone in his hand the whole time, waiting nine years for it to ring.

I didn't know how to start, so I just said it. "My arm's broken. Brandon did it." Silence on the line, but not empty silence — the kind that has weight, that costs something to hold. "I'm putting a case together. I need someone who knows how to try it."

He didn't say *I told you so.* He didn't say *I knew this would happen.* He didn't ask why it took this long, or why I never called before, or what four years of silence between us had meant.

He said, "I'll be there by morning."

And then the line went dead, and I sat there in the dark with the phone still against my ear, and for the first time since the marble floor, something in my chest loosened. Just a little. Just enough to breathe.

He was in the chair beside my bed before the sun came up. I don't know what flight he took or how he got a car at that hour, and I didn't ask. He looked the same and completely different — sharper around the jaw, tired in a way law school never made him, wearing a coat that cost more than anything in my closet that wasn't a gift from Brandon.

He didn't hug me. He didn't touch the cast, or ask if it hurt, or look at me like I was something broken that needed careful handling.

He set his briefcase on the empty chair, opened it, and pulled out a legal pad — fresh, yellow, the kind we used to buy by the case in 1L — and set it on my tray table along with a pen.

"You already know how to do this," he said. "I'm just going to sit where he can see me."

I looked at the pad for a long moment. At the blank first line. At my own handwriting, waiting to happen.

My right hand still worked. That was something. That was, it turned out, enough.

I picked up the pen.

*Case Summary — Rivera v. Stone,* I wrote, and my hand didn't shake at all.

Behind that, underneath four years of silence, something in me that had been buried alive since the day I turned down a federal clerkship for a wedding date sat up, brushed itself off, and started, finally, to speak.

Archer didn't say a word while I wrote. He just sat there, exactly where he said he would, exactly where Brandon Stone would eventually have to look and see him — steady, awake, present in a way no one in that Mercer Island house had ever managed to be for me.

I filled two pages before the nurse came in to check my vitals. I didn't stop writing until she asked me to.
