Chapter 3

Rounds started at seven. The light was still gray, the heat not yet pressing down. I moved through the ward with Soren at my shoulder and Fadwa tracking vitals on the tablet. Bed three: shrapnel extraction, day five post-op, wound clean. Bed seven: compound fracture, pins holding, no fever. Bed nine: burns, eight years old, asking when his mother could visit.

I crouched beside his bed. My hand found his small one. It shook slightly, but he didn't seem to notice.

"Soon," I told him in Arabic. "She's coming soon."

He believed me. Children usually did. It was one of the few mercies left.

Soren waited until we were three beds down to ask his question. "The dressing change on bed seven—should I use the silver sulfadiazine or switch to the standard gauze?"

"Silver," I said. "For another forty-eight hours. Then we reassess."

He wrote it down. He always wrote everything down, like he was afraid he'd forget, like my words were something worth preserving. It made me tired in a way I couldn't name.

Across the ward, Colette Morgan was awake. Sitting up. Watching.

I finished rounds. Signed off on the charts. Told Soren to check the boy's burn dressings again before lunch. Then I went to find coffee that wasn't instant, which was a losing battle in this place but one I fought anyway.

I was halfway to the staff room when Fadwa found me.

"Dr. Turner." She looked apologetic. "The patient in bed twelve is asking for you. She says it's medical."

Bed twelve. Colette.

I should have sent Soren. I didn't.

I walked back into the ward. The morning light was coming through the high windows now, white and unforgiving. Colette was sitting up against the pillows, looking smaller than she had the day before. Fragile. The kind of fragile that made people want to fix things.

I stopped at the foot of her bed. "Your vitals are stable. Is there pain?"

"No." She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "I wanted to thank you. For everything you've done."

I waited.

She reached for something on the bedside table. A folded piece of paper. She slid it across the surface toward me.

"I know this place doesn't pay much," she said. Her voice was soft. Concerned. "And I know you've been through so much. Ezra told me—about the trial, the prison. I can't imagine."

I looked at the paper. A check. Two hundred thousand dollars. Made out to Melany Turner. Her signature looped across the bottom in elegant script.

"You could start over," she said. "Somewhere more comfortable. Somewhere you don't have to—" Her eyes flicked to my hands. "—work so hard."

I picked up the check. Not to take it. To move it out of the way so I could reach her chart.

"Your discharge is scheduled for Thursday," I said. "Barring complications. Someone will go over the aftercare instructions with you tomorrow."

I set the check back on the table. Right where she'd put it.

"Dr. Turner—"

"If you experience increased pain, shortness of breath, or fever above 101, tell the nurse immediately." I clipped the chart back onto the foot of her bed. "Is there anything else?"

She stared at me. The smile was gone. Something colder moved behind her eyes, just for a second, before she smoothed it away.

"No," she said quietly. "Nothing else."

I walked out. Across the ward, Dakota was standing near the supply cart. She'd seen the whole thing. I knew by the set of her jaw.

She didn't say anything. Neither did I.

I went back to the boy with the burns and changed his dressing myself, even though Soren could have done it. My hands shook the whole time. He didn't seem to mind.

---

Ezra found me in the corridor outside the imaging room. Two in the afternoon. The heat was brutal, pressing down like a hand.

He looked like he'd been waiting. Again.

"Melany." He stepped into my path. Not blocking it. Just—there. "Can we talk?"

"About Colette's discharge instructions?" I had a tablet under my arm. A patient file I needed to review. Somewhere else to be.

"No." He swallowed. "About you."

I waited.

"I've been in contact with the board at Langley Memorial in Manhattan," he said. "They're opening a new trauma center. State of the art. Kennedy Pharmaceuticals is the primary donor. They need a Chief of Surgery."

I looked at him.

"I told them about you," he continued. "Your record at Mount Sinai. Your work here. They're prepared to offer you the position. Full authority over hiring, protocols, budget. Whatever you need."

The generator hummed somewhere behind the walls. A truck rumbled past outside.

"It's a chance to do the kind of surgery you were meant to do," Ezra said. His voice was careful. Measured. Like he was negotiating something fragile. "To build something. I know I can't undo what happened, but I can—I can try to make things right."

I shifted the tablet to my other arm.

"I already have everything I need," I said.

He blinked. "Melany—"

"Excuse me." I stepped around him. "I have patients."

I didn't look back. I didn't need to. I already knew what his face looked like when someone walked away.

Behind me, the corridor was silent except for the hum of the generator and the distant sound of a child crying somewhere deeper in the building.

I kept walking.
