Chapter 4

The east clinic run happens at night, when the trucks can move without drawing fire from checkpoints that get nervous after dark. I didn't ask Ezra to come. Rami did, because the crates were heavy and Ezra had insisted, three separate times, that he wanted to help carry something.

I let him. It was easier than arguing.

We worked under a single string of bulbs, unloading saline and antibiotics into a clinic the size of a shipping container. A woman came in around nine with a laceration across her forearm, deep enough to need layered sutures. I knelt beside her cot, and before I picked up the needle driver, I pressed my right palm flat against my thigh.

One. Two. Three.

I didn't think about it. I never think about it. It's just the thing I do before my hands become useful again.

I felt Ezra watching from the doorway, a crate still in his arms, but I didn't look up. I finished the sutures. Clean, even, slower than they used to be but clean.

An hour later, a boy came in with a fever and a swollen hand, infection tracking up from a cut he'd ignored for a week. I pressed my palm to my thigh again before I opened the kit.

One. Two. Three.

The third time was closer to midnight, a man with chest pain that turned out to be nothing but panic and exhaustion. Palm to thigh. One, two, three. I heard Ezra shift his weight against the doorframe each time, like something in him was trying to stand up straighter and couldn't.

Soren caught me afterward, restocking the kit by the light of his phone. "Dr. Turner. That thing you do — before you start. What is it?"

I didn't look at him right away. "It's how I remember my hands still work."

He nodded like that answered everything, the way he does, solemn and young and certain that if he wrote it down carefully enough, he could understand it.

I didn't see Ezra's face when he heard that. I didn't need to. I felt the silence change shape behind me, the particular stillness of someone realizing something he can't take back.

I didn't explain further. I zipped the kit closed and carried it to the truck.

---

I found out about the photographs at six in the morning, coming off a double shift with sand in my teeth and my eyes burning from lack of sleep.

The supply room door had one taped to it at eye level. Then another, further down the hall. By the time I reached the staff lounge, there were six, maybe eight, glossy printouts stuck up with medical tape, curling slightly in the heat.

My face. My body, or something built to look like it — smooth where scars should be, no tremor in the hands because whoever made this had never seen my hands shake. Positions engineered to humiliate. My name typed across the bottom corner of each one in a font too clean to be anything but deliberate.

I stood in the doorway of the lounge and did not move.

A young nurse, Layla, was already there, one hand pressed over her mouth, the other reaching to tear a photo down before she saw me and froze, unsure whether taking it down would make things worse or better.

"Don't," I said. My voice came out flatter than I meant it to. "Leave it. For now."

She lowered her hand.

I walked the length of the hallway once, slowly, the way I'd walk a ward during rounds, cataloging. Eight printed images. A ninth taped crookedly to the med cabinet, half falling. Somewhere behind me, I heard Rami's tablet chime — the administrative email chain, filling with something he hadn't opened yet but would, in a matter of minutes, have to.

I recognized the architecture of it immediately. The same shape as five years ago. Different city, different walls, same hand behind the curtain, holding the same conviction that if you make a woman ugly enough in public, no one will look closely enough to see that she did nothing wrong.

I had learned, once, what it felt like to have my name turned into a weapon and handed to strangers. I had thought I would never have to relearn it.

I was wrong.

My hand found my thigh without my permission. One. Two. Three. It didn't help this time. The tremor stayed.

Down the corridor, a door opened, and I heard Dakota's voice before I saw her — sharp, rising, already furious at whatever she was looking at.

I didn't move toward the sound. I stood very still in the lounge doorway, surrounded by strangers' idea of my body, and felt something in my chest go cold and quiet and exact, the way it does right before I pick up a scalpel and decide, deliberately, not to feel anything at all.
