Chapter 3

The elevator doors opened onto the Plaza lobby. Marble floors. Crystal chandeliers. Tourists with shopping bags. A normal Tuesday afternoon for everyone except me.

Diana walked beside me. She didn't ask if I was okay. She knew better.

"Car's out front," she said.

We pushed through the revolving door. Sunlight hit my face. Fifth Avenue traffic roared past. My town car idled at the curb. The driver saw me coming and opened the door.

Behind us, the Plaza's main entrance exploded with noise. Guests poured onto the sidewalk. Phones raised. Voices overlapping. I caught fragments as I slid into the back seat.

"—can't believe she—"

"—recording the whole time—"

"—Nora Voss already filed the story—"

Diana climbed in beside me. The door closed. The noise cut off.

"Two hundred thousand views," she said, checking her phone. "Nora's livestream. Still climbing."

I leaned my head back against the leather seat. My hands were steady. That surprised me. I'd expected them to shake.

"What's next?" I asked.

Diana scrolled through her screen. "Emmett's attorneys will file defamation within twenty-four hours. Standard play. They'll claim the recording was fabricated. Deepfake. AI manipulation. Whatever sticks."

"Let them," I said.

She glanced at me. "You have the original file?"

"Three copies. Three separate servers. All with timestamps and metadata intact."

She nodded. "Good."

The car merged into traffic. I watched the city slide past the window. We passed the park. Joggers. Dog walkers. People having ordinary days.

My phone buzzed. I pulled it from my coat pocket. A text from my father. *Are you safe?*

I typed back. *Yes. Going home.*

*Your mother wants to see you.*

*Tonight. I promise.*

I put the phone away. Diana was still scrolling.

"The Turners are in damage control mode," she said. "Remington's team is already reaching out to friendly media. Trying to spin this as a misunderstanding. Cold feet. Wedding jitters."

I almost laughed. "They think that's going to work?"

"They think their name still means something."

"It doesn't," I said. "Not anymore."

We drove in silence for a while. The car turned onto Park Avenue. Familiar buildings. Familiar streets. This was my city. I'd grown up here. I knew every block, every corner. The Turners thought they owned it. They were wrong.

Diana's phone rang. She answered, listened, then ended the call without saying a word.

"Emmett just left The Plaza," she said. "Remington dragged him out through the service entrance. They're at the Turner Group headquarters now."

"Planning their next move," I said.

"Probably."

I touched the inside of my left wrist. The gesture grounded me. Reminded me this was real. I'd actually done it. Walked away. Said no in front of five hundred people.

The car pulled up to my building. Doorman in his usual spot. He opened the door and nodded at me like it was any other day.

"Miss Hall," he said.

"Marcus," I replied.

Diana followed me into the lobby. We rode the elevator to the penthouse in silence. The doors opened directly into my apartment. Floor-to-ceiling windows. View of the park. Everything exactly as I'd left it this morning.

I set my coat on the chair. Kicked off my heels. The wedding gown felt heavy suddenly. Like it was trying to pull me down.

"I need to change," I said.

Diana nodded. "I'll make coffee."

I walked to my bedroom. Unzipped the dress. Let it fall to the floor in a pool of silk and lace. I stepped out of it and left it there. Someone else could deal with it later.

I pulled on jeans. A sweater. Thick socks. Normal clothes. I looked at myself in the mirror. Same face. Same eyes. But something had shifted. I could feel it.

When I came back out, Diana had two mugs waiting on the counter. Black coffee. No sugar. She knew how I took it.

I wrapped my hands around the mug. The heat felt good.

"Emmett's going to retaliate," Diana said. It wasn't a question.

"I know."

"Mallory too."

"I know," I said again.

She looked at me over the rim of her mug. "You ready for that?"

I thought about the yacht. The cabin. Mallory's smile. Emmett's hand in her hair. The way he'd looked at me afterward. Like I was nothing.

"I've been ready," I said.

My phone buzzed again. Not my father this time. Unknown number. I almost didn't answer. Then I did.

"Genevieve Hall," I said.

Silence on the other end. Then breathing. Soft. Deliberate.

"You made a mistake today," Mallory's voice. Quiet. Almost kind. The same tone she'd used on the yacht.

I didn't respond.

"You embarrassed him," she continued. "You embarrassed his family. You think you can just walk away from that?"

"I already did," I said.

She laughed. Light. Musical. "You don't understand how this works. You're nobody, Genevieve. A small-town girl playing dress-up. The Turners will destroy you. And I'm going to help them."

I took a sip of coffee. Let her wait.

"Are you done?" I asked.

Another pause. Then the line went dead.

I set the phone on the counter. Diana was watching me.

"Mallory," I said.

"Threatening you?"

"Trying to."

Diana's expression didn't change. "We should increase security."

"Already done," I said. "I called the service this morning."

She nodded. Took another sip of coffee.

Outside, the sun was setting. The park turned gold. The city lights started coming on. Somewhere out there, Emmett was planning his counterattack. Mallory was making calls. The Turners were circling their wagons.

I stood at the window and watched the light fade.

Let them come.

The Billionaire's Neglected Wife Is A Genius Novel Cover
9.7
Ellyn woke to a news alert of her husband, billionaire Hardy Burnett, picking up his "mystery blonde" ex at a private terminal. Just hours earlier, he had been raw and consuming in their shared bed, but by morning, he was a cold stranger tossing a birth control pill at her. He reminded her with mechanical indifference that their marriage was a mere contract, and the Burnett family tolerated no accidental risks. The mystery woman was Izabella Macdonald, the one who got away. While Ellyn spent her mornings dabbing heavy concealer over the purple bruises Hardy left on her neck, the rest of the world was celebrating the return of the "rightful" Mrs. Burnett. To Hardy, Ellyn was a liability; to his family, she was a placeholder with a bankrupt bloodline. The humiliation peaked at a high-society gala when Hardy walked in with Izabella on his arm, leaving Ellyn to navigate the vultures alone. His mother mocked her as "cheap polyester," and socialites whispered about the penthouse Hardy was secretly buying for his mistress. Even as Hardy's jealousy flared when he saw Ellyn with his brother, his loyalty remained divided, his heart seemingly anchored to the woman in the white silk dress. The breaking point came in the pouring rain outside the venue. Hardy ordered Ellyn into the backseat of the car like common cargo so that Izabella could take the passenger seat-the seat of the partner. He expected Ellyn to sit in the shadows and watch his ex-girlfriend play wife in the front, treating her presence as a domestic inconvenience he could simply command. I stared at the man who owned my nights but despised my existence. The heavy thud of the pill I swallowed every morning felt like a lead weight, a bitter reminder that I was nothing more than a paid commodity in his eyes. He thought he knew everything about his destitute, dependent wife, from the temperature I needed the room to the way I took my tea. But Hardy didn't know about the encrypted ledgers or the offshore accounts. He didn't know that the "destitute" woman he relegated to the backseat was the secret mastermind behind Skim, the global fashion empire currently worth more than his latest merger. "I'm not getting in," I said, my voice eerily calm against the thunder. I slammed the door, turned my back on his roar of fury, and walked into the dark. It was time to stop being a ghost in his house and start being the woman who could buy his entire world.
