Chapter 4

The photograph arrived at 2:47 p.m.

I was standing at my kitchen counter. Coffee mug in one hand. Phone in the other. Scrolling through the flood of messages Diana had forwarded. Media requests. Interview offers. Three separate book deals.

Then the screen went black. A new message. Unknown sender.

I opened it.

My mother sat bound to a metal chair. Rope around her wrists. Rope around her ankles. Behind her, concrete walls streaked with rust. A single industrial light overhead. At the edge of the frame, barely visible, the barrel of a gun.

My hands didn't shake. They went numb instead. The mug slipped. Hit the counter. Coffee spread across the marble in a dark pool.

A second message appeared. Coordinates. Red Hook, Brooklyn. Then a timestamp. 4:47 p.m. Two hours.

One word below that. *Alone.*

I stood there. Four minutes. I counted them. One hundred and forty seconds of my mother's face filling my screen. Her eyes weren't closed. She was looking directly at the camera. At me. Her expression was calm. Too calm. She was trying to tell me something.

*Don't panic. Think.*

I set the phone down. Walked to my bedroom. Opened the closet. Pulled out jeans. Boots. A black jacket. I dressed like I was going to run errands. Normal clothes. Nothing that would draw attention.

I sat on the edge of my bed. Lifted my left wrist. The smartwatch face glowed. I swiped twice. A hidden interface opened. Diana and I had built it six months ago. Just in case.

The livestream protocol.

I programmed the settings. Direct server upload. Simultaneous push to every major platform. Auto-trigger set for forty-five minutes after I reached the coordinates. If I didn't manually cancel it, the stream would go live. Everything. Whatever happened in that warehouse. Broadcast to the world in real time.

I saved the settings. Locked the interface. Put on my coat.

My phone buzzed. Diana. I answered.

"Where are you?" she asked.

"Home."

"I just saw the social media surge. Emmett's team is flooding the platforms. They're calling you a hacker. A deepfake artist. They're saying you fabricated the recording."

I looked at my reflection in the bedroom mirror. Same face. Different eyes.

"Let them," I said.

"Gen, this is coordinated. Professional. They've got bot networks amplifying it. The narrative is shifting. People are starting to believe—"

"Diana," I said. "I need you to trust me."

Silence on the other end. Then, quietly, "What's happening?"

"I can't tell you yet."

"Genevieve—"

"I'll call you in three hours," I said. "If I don't, check the livestream server."

I ended the call before she could respond.

I walked to the kitchen. Picked up my phone. Looked at the photograph one more time. My mother's face. The rope. The gun.

I touched the inside of my left wrist. Once.

Then I left.

The car was waiting downstairs. Not my usual driver. Someone new. Someone Roger had sent without telling me. I slid into the back seat.

"Red Hook," I said. "Warehouse district."

The driver nodded. Didn't ask questions. We pulled into traffic.

Manhattan slid past the window. Tourists. Taxis. People carrying shopping bags. The city didn't know. Didn't care. Life kept moving.

My phone buzzed. Another unknown number. I answered.

"Genevieve." Mallory's voice. Soft. Almost gentle.

"Where is she?" I asked.

Mallory laughed. Light. Musical. "You'll see her soon. If you follow instructions."

"If you hurt her—"

"You'll what?" Mallory's tone shifted. Colder now. "You'll call the police? You'll send your lawyers? You're nobody, Genevieve. You embarrassed Emmett. You embarrassed his family. Did you really think there wouldn't be consequences?"

I didn't answer.

"Come alone," Mallory continued. "No phones. No recording devices. No clever little tricks. If I see anyone else, your mother dies. Understand?"

"I understand," I said.

The line went dead.

I looked at my watch. The livestream protocol was armed. Waiting. Forty-five minutes after arrival.

The car crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. The water below was gray. Flat. The skyline shrank behind us.

We entered Red Hook. Industrial buildings. Empty lots. Chain-link fences. The driver followed the coordinates. Turned down a narrow street. Stopped in front of a warehouse with boarded windows.

"Here," he said.

I looked at the building. Rust-stained concrete. A single metal door. No other cars. No movement.

I checked my watch. 4:31 p.m. Sixteen minutes early.

I opened the car door.

"Miss Hall," the driver said. "Should I wait?"

I looked at him. He was young. Nervous. Roger had probably told him to keep me safe.

"No," I said. "Go back to Manhattan."

"But—"

"Now," I said.

He hesitated. Then he nodded. I stepped out. Closed the door. The car pulled away. Taillights disappeared around the corner.

I stood alone on the empty street.

The warehouse door was fifty feet away. I walked toward it. My boots echoed on the pavement. The wind cut through my jacket.

I reached the door. Put my hand on the cold metal.

Somewhere inside, my mother was waiting.

I pushed the door open.

And stepped into the dark.

The Billionaire's Neglected Wife Is A Genius Novel Cover
9.7
Ellyn woke to a news alert of her husband, billionaire Hardy Burnett, picking up his "mystery blonde" ex at a private terminal. Just hours earlier, he had been raw and consuming in their shared bed, but by morning, he was a cold stranger tossing a birth control pill at her. He reminded her with mechanical indifference that their marriage was a mere contract, and the Burnett family tolerated no accidental risks. The mystery woman was Izabella Macdonald, the one who got away. While Ellyn spent her mornings dabbing heavy concealer over the purple bruises Hardy left on her neck, the rest of the world was celebrating the return of the "rightful" Mrs. Burnett. To Hardy, Ellyn was a liability; to his family, she was a placeholder with a bankrupt bloodline. The humiliation peaked at a high-society gala when Hardy walked in with Izabella on his arm, leaving Ellyn to navigate the vultures alone. His mother mocked her as "cheap polyester," and socialites whispered about the penthouse Hardy was secretly buying for his mistress. Even as Hardy's jealousy flared when he saw Ellyn with his brother, his loyalty remained divided, his heart seemingly anchored to the woman in the white silk dress. The breaking point came in the pouring rain outside the venue. Hardy ordered Ellyn into the backseat of the car like common cargo so that Izabella could take the passenger seat-the seat of the partner. He expected Ellyn to sit in the shadows and watch his ex-girlfriend play wife in the front, treating her presence as a domestic inconvenience he could simply command. I stared at the man who owned my nights but despised my existence. The heavy thud of the pill I swallowed every morning felt like a lead weight, a bitter reminder that I was nothing more than a paid commodity in his eyes. He thought he knew everything about his destitute, dependent wife, from the temperature I needed the room to the way I took my tea. But Hardy didn't know about the encrypted ledgers or the offshore accounts. He didn't know that the "destitute" woman he relegated to the backseat was the secret mastermind behind Skim, the global fashion empire currently worth more than his latest merger. "I'm not getting in," I said, my voice eerily calm against the thunder. I slammed the door, turned my back on his roar of fury, and walked into the dark. It was time to stop being a ghost in his house and start being the woman who could buy his entire world.
