Chapter 2

The Plaza ballroom smelled like gardenias and old money. Five hundred guests filled the gilded space. I counted them while I waited in the bridal suite. Wall Street CEOs. Media executives. Families whose names were on museum wings. Nora Voss, the society columnist, sat front and center with her phone already out. She'd been covering Manhattan weddings for thirty years. She knew how to smell a story.

I stood in front of the mirror. The gown was ivory silk. Hand-embroidered lace at the bodice. A train that pooled on the marble floor behind me. My hair was pinned in soft waves. My makeup was flawless. I looked like every other society bride who'd ever stood in this room.

My phone buzzed. A text from Diana. *System accessed. File loaded. Ready when you are.*

I read it twice. Then I tucked the phone into my bouquet and turned to the attendant.

"I'm ready," I said.

She opened the door. The processional music started. Handel. Traditional. Safe. I walked down the aisle alone. My father had offered to escort me. I'd told him no. This moment was mine.

Emmett waited at the altar. Black tuxedo. Slicked hair. He smiled when he saw me. Not the smile of a man in love. The smile of a man who'd just closed a favorable merger. Behind him, Remington Turner stood with his hands folded, already mentally drafting the press release.

I looked past Emmett to the second row. Mallory sat there in a white dress. Not ivory. Pure white. She'd worn white to my wedding. Her smile was small and smug. She crossed her legs and leaned back like she was watching a show she'd already seen the ending to.

I reached the altar. Emmett extended his hand. I didn't take it. I set my bouquet on the platform and turned to face the crowd.

The officiant cleared his throat. He was a federal judge. A friend of Remington's. He'd probably done this ceremony a hundred times.

"Dearly beloved," he began.

I let him get through the opening. The part about marriage being an honorable institution. The part about love and commitment. I watched the guests. Some were checking their phones. Some were whispering behind programs. Nora Voss had her notebook out.

The officiant turned to me. "Genevieve Hall, do you take Emmett Turner to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold—"

"No," I said.

The ballroom went silent. Five hundred people stopped breathing at once.

I stepped to the microphone. The officiant moved aside, confused. Emmett reached for my arm. I pulled away.

"I have something everyone needs to hear," I said.

I pulled my phone from the bouquet. One tap. The screen lit up. I pressed play.

The ballroom's sound system crackled. Then Emmett's voice filled the space. Clear. Unmistakable.

*"—transfer the Hall assets into the Turner holding company within the first six months. She won't question it. She doesn't understand corporate structure."*

Mallory's laugh. Light. Playful. *"And if she does?"*

*"Our attorneys will tie her up in litigation for years. By the time she realizes what's happening, it'll be too late. The prenup is airtight. Everything she brings into the marriage becomes joint property. Everything joint becomes ours."*

*"You're brilliant, baby."*

*"I know. She actually thinks I'm going to—"* A pause. *"—going to love her. It's almost sad."*

*"Almost,"* Mallory said. *"But not quite."*

I let it play for forty-seven seconds. No one moved. No one spoke. Nora Voss was typing so fast I could hear her fingernails on the screen.

I stopped the recording. I turned to Emmett. His face had gone white. His mouth opened but nothing came out.

"That was recorded three weeks ago," I said. "In your apartment. While I was at my fitting."

I looked at Mallory. She was frozen. The smug smile was gone. Her hands were gripping the armrests of her chair.

I picked up the marriage license from the altar. Heavy paper. Gold seal. Both our names printed at the top. I tore it in half. The sound echoed through the silent ballroom.

"This engagement," I said, "is over."

I dropped the pieces on the floor. They landed at Emmett's feet. He stared at them like they were something he couldn't identify.

Remington Turner stood. His face was red. "You can't—"

"I just did," I said.

I turned to the guests. Five hundred faces. Shock. Confusion. A few people were smiling. Nora Voss looked like she'd just won the lottery.

"The Turner family," I said, "entered this arrangement in bad faith. They intended to defraud my family. They used me. They lied to me. And they assumed I was too small and too stupid to fight back."

I paused. I touched the inside of my left wrist. Once.

"They were wrong," I said.

I walked down the aisle. Alone. My train dragged behind me. No one tried to stop me. No one said a word. The ballroom doors opened. I stepped into the hallway.

Behind me, the silence broke. Voices erupted. Phones came out. Nora Voss was already calling her editor.

I kept walking. Diana was waiting by the elevators. She handed me my coat.

"How do you feel?" she asked.

"Free," I said.

The elevator doors closed. The noise faded. I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes.

It wasn't over. I knew that. Emmett wouldn't let this stand. Mallory would retaliate. The Turners would use every resource they had to destroy me.

But I was ready.

I'd been ready since the moment I saw him kiss her on that yacht.

The elevator descended. The Plaza disappeared above me. I stepped out into the lobby. Sunlight streamed through the windows. The city was waiting.

I walked into it.

The Billionaire's Neglected Wife Is A Genius Novel Cover

Ellyn woke to a news alert of her husband, billionaire Hardy Burnett, picking up his "mystery blonde" ex at a private terminal. Just hours earlier, he had been raw and consuming in their shared bed, but by morning, he was a cold stranger tossing a birth control pill at her. He reminded her with mechanical indifference that their marriage was a mere contract, and the Burnett family tolerated no accidental risks. The mystery woman was Izabella Macdonald, the one who got away. While Ellyn spent her mornings dabbing heavy concealer over the purple bruises Hardy left on her neck, the rest of the world was celebrating the return of the "rightful" Mrs. Burnett. To Hardy, Ellyn was a liability; to his family, she was a placeholder with a bankrupt bloodline. The humiliation peaked at a high-society gala when Hardy walked in with Izabella on his arm, leaving Ellyn to navigate the vultures alone. His mother mocked her as "cheap polyester," and socialites whispered about the penthouse Hardy was secretly buying for his mistress. Even as Hardy's jealousy flared when he saw Ellyn with his brother, his loyalty remained divided, his heart seemingly anchored to the woman in the white silk dress. The breaking point came in the pouring rain outside the venue. Hardy ordered Ellyn into the backseat of the car like common cargo so that Izabella could take the passenger seat-the seat of the partner. He expected Ellyn to sit in the shadows and watch his ex-girlfriend play wife in the front, treating her presence as a domestic inconvenience he could simply command. I stared at the man who owned my nights but despised my existence. The heavy thud of the pill I swallowed every morning felt like a lead weight, a bitter reminder that I was nothing more than a paid commodity in his eyes. He thought he knew everything about his destitute, dependent wife, from the temperature I needed the room to the way I took my tea. But Hardy didn't know about the encrypted ledgers or the offshore accounts. He didn't know that the "destitute" woman he relegated to the backseat was the secret mastermind behind Skim, the global fashion empire currently worth more than his latest merger. "I'm not getting in," I said, my voice eerily calm against the thunder. I slammed the door, turned my back on his roar of fury, and walked into the dark. It was time to stop being a ghost in his house and start being the woman who could buy his entire world.
