Chapter 3

I was still standing at the sink when the memory hit me. It came sideways, the way bad memories do, sliding in through a crack I didn't know was open.

The boutique hotel on the Lower East Side. Fourteen months ago.

I remembered the phone call from Claire. Her voice, breathless. "I just saw Ethan going into the Bellhaven. Alone. I thought you should know." I remembered the way my stomach dropped, the way I grabbed my keys without even finishing my coffee. I remembered running three red lights.

I remembered bursting through that hotel room door — unlocked, like someone had left it that way on purpose — and finding Raven there.

She was screaming at him. Her hand cracked across his face so hard the sound of it still lived somewhere in my ears. "How could you do this to her?" she'd shouted. "She's my best friend, Ethan! My best friend!"

Ethan had stood there, red-cheeked, stammering something about a business meeting that got confused, a woman he was supposed to meet who never showed. Raven had turned to me, mascara smudged, chest heaving, and said, "I followed him. I saw him come in here and I just — I couldn't let him do something to hurt you. I couldn't."

I had hugged her. I remembered that clearly now, sickly clearly — my arms around her shoulders, her face pressed into my neck, both of us crying in that hotel hallway while Ethan stood by the door looking like a man who'd been caught doing something he hadn't quite done.

I had thanked her. I had told her she was the best friend anyone could ask for.

I put my cold coffee down on the counter so hard it sloshed over the rim.

Of course. Of course.

They'd been warned. Someone must have called Ethan the second Claire mentioned it, or maybe Claire herself had said something to someone who said something to Raven. It didn't matter how. What mattered was that Raven hadn't followed him there. She'd been inside first. Waiting. And when they realized they'd been spotted, she staged the only thing that could explain a locked hotel room without destroying everything — a fight. A public, violent, believable fight.

I had walked out of that room more in love with my best friend than I had ever been.

My stomach turned. I made it to the bathroom just in time, my knees hitting the tile, my whole body seizing around the memory of her arms holding me while she lied to my face.

When it passed, I rinsed my mouth, sat on the edge of the tub, and made myself breathe. Then I picked up my phone.

I needed to hear it from someone who didn't know what I knew.

I called Claire.

"Sash! Hey, it's been forever," she said, warm and easy, the sound of a coffee shop behind her.

"I know, I know. Work's been insane." I forced my voice into something light. "I was actually thinking about you — remember that thing at the Bellhaven, like a year ago? With Ethan?"

There was a small pause. "God, yeah. That was wild."

"I never really asked you how you even ended up there," I said. "Were you just walking by?"

"I was meeting someone for a drink two doors down," Claire said. "I saw Ethan going in through the side entrance and I thought, that's weird, why's he going in there alone. So I texted you."

"Right. And then I called Raven, I think? Or did she already—" I let the sentence hang, casual, like I was just piecing together an old memory for fun.

"No, she was already there," Claire said. "I remember because when you showed up, I was still outside, and I saw Raven's car in the lot. It'd been there a while — I noticed it when I first got there, actually, before I even saw Ethan."

My hand tightened around the phone. "Before you saw Ethan."

"Yeah. I didn't think anything of it at the time. Why would I? I just thought it was funny, in hindsight, that she got there before all the drama even started. Like she had, I don't know, a sixth sense." Claire laughed, easy, oblivious. "Anyway, crazy day. You okay? You sound weird."

"I'm fine," I said. "Just tired."

We talked for another minute about nothing — her sister's baby shower, a restaurant she wanted to try. I said the right things at the right times. I don't remember most of it.

When I hung up, I sat very still on the edge of the tub.

Raven's car had been in that lot before Claire ever saw Ethan walk in. Before anyone called anyone. She hadn't rushed there to protect me.

She'd already been inside, waiting for him, when the two of them realized they'd been seen.

The slap. The tears. The trembling hug in the hallway. All of it had been built in the time it took me to drive across the bridge.

I thought about how grateful I'd felt walking out of that hotel. How I'd told everyone at brunch the following week what a fierce, loyal friend Raven was. How I'd bragged about her.

I stood up, rinsed my mouth again at the sink, and looked at myself in the mirror. My face looked the same as it always had. That was the strange part. Nothing on the outside had changed at all.

The sensation of falling wasn't like flying; it was heavy, violent, and smelled of burning flesh. Above us, on the crumbling balcony of the Sears manor, Duke Cato Sears turned his back, shielding his cousin Bianca from the smoke as he walked away, leaving my sister Blossom and me to drop into the abyss. As the darkness slammed shut like an iron door, I realized my entire life had been a cruel script written by the people I called family. In my first life, I was the sacrificial lamb of the Dawson manor, sold to a man who eventually watched me die without blinking. My sister Blossom had pushed me into Cato's arms to avoid his rumors, only to laugh when the fire finally consumed us both. My father had measured my value like a piece of livestock, and my step-grandmother didn't even acknowledge my existence while I was being led to the slaughter. I died in that fire, feeling the heat scorch my skin and the weight of a hatred so potent it tasted like bile. I spent twenty years being the weak, manipulated shadow of a girl, only to end up as nothing more than a phantom scorch mark on a "hero's" estate. I couldn't understand why my own blood treated my life like a game they could discard. The injustice of it all burned hotter than the flames that took my last breath. Then, I sat up, sucking in air that tasted of lavender and air conditioning, not smoke. I was back in my bedroom, three days before the engagement ball that ruined my life. Blossom stood at the door, her "sweet" mask slipping as she tried to manipulate me into the Duke's path again. She thought she was the only one who had come back, but she didn't realize that this time, I was going to let her have exactly what she wanted: the Duke, the bankruptcy, and the living hell that awaited her in that house.
