Chapter 4

The pain started low in my stomach, just below my ribs. At first it felt like hunger. Then it twisted.

I was sitting at the kitchen counter with my laptop open. Ethan was in the living room watching something on his phone. The afternoon light slanted through the windows, warm and ordinary. Then the cramp seized me so hard I gasped.

"Sash?" Ethan's voice came from the other room.

I tried to answer but the pain folded me forward. My forehead hit the edge of the counter. I slid off the stool and my knees hit the floor.

"Sasha!"

Footsteps. Fast. Then Ethan was kneeling beside me, his hand on my back. "What's wrong? Talk to me."

I couldn't. The pain was a white-hot band wrapping around my middle, squeezing. I pressed my forehead to the floor and tried to breathe.

"Okay. Okay." His voice was steady. Calm. He helped me up, half-carrying me down the hall to the bathroom. I barely made it. He lowered me onto the tile and I curled onto my side, pulling my knees to my chest.

He brought me water. A cold washcloth. He sat beside me on the floor and stroked my hair back from my face. "Should I call an ambulance?"

I shook my head. The pain was easing slightly. Enough that I could breathe again. "Just... give me a minute."

"You're scaring me," he said softly.

I opened my eyes and looked at him. His face was close to mine, creased with worry. If I didn't know what I knew, I would have believed it completely. The concerned husband. The man who loved me.

His phone rang.

He pulled it from his pocket and glanced at the screen. I watched his face. The concern didn't disappear exactly. It just... adjusted. Like a mask settling back into place after slipping half an inch.

He stood up. "I have to take this."

He stepped into the hallway. I heard his voice, low and urgent. I couldn't make out the words. Then he came back, already reaching for his jacket on the hook by the door.

"I'm so sorry," he said. "Work emergency. I have to go deal with this in person. I'll be back in an hour, I promise. Will you be okay?"

I was still on the floor. Still curled on my side. The tile was cold against my cheek.

"Yeah," I said. "Go."

He hesitated. For just a second, he looked like he might stay. Then he kissed the top of my head and left.

I listened to his footsteps in the hall. The front door opening. Closing. The lock clicking into place.

Then I got up.

The pain was still there, dull and insistent, but I could move through it. I walked to the bedroom and picked up Ethan's iPad from the nightstand. He always left it there. Synced to his phone. Synced to everything.

I opened his messages.

The most recent thread was from Raven.

The first message was a call log. Incoming. Missed. Then a text, sent two minutes ago: "I'm scared. Fender bender near the Brooklyn Bridge. Please come."

Below it, Ethan's reply, already sent: "On my way. Don't move."

I stared at the screen. The pain in my stomach flared again but I barely felt it. I was too cold inside for anything else to register.

I set the iPad down carefully on the bed. Then I walked back to the bathroom, splashed cold water on my face, and looked at myself in the mirror. My skin was pale. My eyes looked hollow.

I went to the closet and pulled on jeans, a sweater, boots. I grabbed my keys and my phone. I didn't think about what I was doing. I just moved.

The elevator ride down felt like it took hours. The lobby was empty except for the doorman, who nodded at me as I passed. Outside, the air was sharp and cold. I got into my car, started the engine, and pulled out onto the street.

The Brooklyn Bridge. I knew exactly where she meant. There was a stretch near the entrance where the traffic always bottlenecked. I'd driven it a thousand times.

I drove now without thinking. My hands on the wheel. My foot on the gas. The city blurred past the windows.

The pain in my stomach was still there, pulsing with every heartbeat. But I didn't stop. I didn't slow down.

I just drove.

Because I needed to see it. Not a screenshot. Not a calendar entry. Not a memory I had to piece together after the fact.

I needed to see them together, in real time, with no performance and no escape.

And I needed to see what Ethan's face looked like when he thought I wasn't watching.

Reborn To Swap Husbands With My Sister Novel Cover

The sensation of falling wasn't like flying; it was heavy, violent, and smelled of burning flesh. Above us, on the crumbling balcony of the Sears manor, Duke Cato Sears turned his back, shielding his cousin Bianca from the smoke as he walked away, leaving my sister Blossom and me to drop into the abyss. As the darkness slammed shut like an iron door, I realized my entire life had been a cruel script written by the people I called family. In my first life, I was the sacrificial lamb of the Dawson manor, sold to a man who eventually watched me die without blinking. My sister Blossom had pushed me into Cato's arms to avoid his rumors, only to laugh when the fire finally consumed us both. My father had measured my value like a piece of livestock, and my step-grandmother didn't even acknowledge my existence while I was being led to the slaughter. I died in that fire, feeling the heat scorch my skin and the weight of a hatred so potent it tasted like bile. I spent twenty years being the weak, manipulated shadow of a girl, only to end up as nothing more than a phantom scorch mark on a "hero's" estate. I couldn't understand why my own blood treated my life like a game they could discard. The injustice of it all burned hotter than the flames that took my last breath. Then, I sat up, sucking in air that tasted of lavender and air conditioning, not smoke. I was back in my bedroom, three days before the engagement ball that ruined my life. Blossom stood at the door, her "sweet" mask slipping as she tried to manipulate me into the Duke's path again. She thought she was the only one who had come back, but she didn't realize that this time, I was going to let her have exactly what she wanted: the Duke, the bankruptcy, and the living hell that awaited her in that house.
