Chapter 2

I woke up before Ethan. The alarm hadn't gone off yet. The bedroom was still dark except for the gray light starting to leak around the edges of the curtains. I could hear his breathing beside me, slow and steady. I turned my head and looked at him. His face was relaxed. Peaceful. Like a man with nothing to hide.

I got out of bed carefully, quietly. I didn't want to wake him. Not yet.

I went to the kitchen and made coffee. While it brewed, I opened my laptop at the counter. The apartment was silent. Just the hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of traffic starting up outside.

I logged into our joint credit card account. We'd always kept it that way. Ethan said it was easier. I never questioned it. Now I was grateful.

I scrolled back through the statements. Months. Years. I wasn't looking for anything specific at first. Just patterns. Charges I didn't recognize. Places I'd never been.

Then I saw it.

The Langham Hotel. Midtown.

The first charge was from three years ago. Then another one two months later. Then another. I kept scrolling. They were everywhere. Small charges, always under three hundred dollars. Room service. Bar tabs. Sometimes just the room itself.

I clicked on one entry and stared at the date.

Three days before our wedding.

I set down my coffee cup. My hand was shaking.

I took a screenshot. Then I went back further and took more. I saved each one in a folder on my desktop. I labeled it "D." For divorce. Or maybe for done. I wasn't sure yet.

Behind me, I heard the bedroom door open. Ethan's footsteps padded down the hall. I closed the laptop.

"You're up early," he said. He was wearing the T-shirt he slept in, his hair sticking up on one side. He looked rumpled and boyish. He smiled at me.

"Couldn't sleep," I said.

"Bad dreams?"

"Something like that."

He poured himself coffee and leaned against the counter beside me. He smelled like sleep and the detergent I used on our sheets. Familiar. Safe.

"Want to talk about it?" he asked.

"No," I said. "I'm fine."

He kissed the top of my head and wandered into the living room with his mug. I heard the television click on. Morning news. He always watched the morning news.

I opened the laptop again.

This time I went to the family iPad we kept on the kitchen counter. Ethan's work calendar was synced to it. He'd set it up that way years ago so I could see when he'd be late or out of town. He said he wanted me to always know where he was.

I pulled up his calendar and started scrolling. Late meetings. Client dinners. Conferences. I took screenshots of everything.

Then I opened Instagram on my phone and pulled up Raven's profile. She posted constantly. Photos of her coffee. Her outfits. The streets she walked down. She always tagged her location.

I started matching them up.

March fourteenth. Ethan's calendar said "Client dinner, running late." Raven's Instagram showed a photo of a cocktail at a bar six blocks from his office. Posted at 8:47 PM. The caption was just a martini emoji.

April ninth. Ethan's calendar said "Gym after work." Raven posted a sunset photo from the High Line at 7:30 PM. The gym he went to was two blocks from the High Line entrance.

May twenty-second. Ethan's calendar said "Drinks with Stevens." Raven posted a blurry photo of string lights and wine glasses at a rooftop bar in Chelsea. No caption. Posted at 9:15 PM.

I kept going. The overlaps were everywhere. Dozens of them. Maybe hundreds. I took screenshots of everything and added them to the folder.

My coffee had gone cold. I didn't care.

I opened the old group chat thread from our friends. The one we all used to plan dinners and weekend trips. I scrolled back two years. Then three.

There it was.

The SoHo brunch. Claire had posted a photo of all of us at the table. Mimosas and avocado toast and bright Sunday morning light. In the background, you could see Raven holding an iced latte. Ethan was sitting across from her, laughing at something someone said.

Then, ten minutes later, Claire had posted again: "Raven just spilled coffee ALL OVER Ethan omg the SCREAMING."

Below that, a string of laughing emojis from everyone. Someone wrote, "Those two are gonna KILL each other one day I swear."

I remembered that day. Raven had been mortified. Or at least she acted like it. She'd grabbed napkins and dabbed at Ethan's shirt while yelling at him for sitting too close to her elbow. He'd stood up and snapped at her, loud enough that people at other tables turned to look. Then he'd stormed out. Raven stayed and apologized to all of us, her face red, her hands shaking.

We all thought it was real.

I stared at the thread. At the emojis. At Claire's comment.

They had fooled everyone.

Not just me. Everyone.

I closed the chat and set my phone down on the counter. I looked at the folder on my laptop. Dozens of files now. Screenshots. Dates. Locations. A map of betrayal.

I heard Ethan laugh at something on the television. It was a sound I used to love. Now it made my skin crawl.

I saved the folder. Backed it up to the cloud. Then I closed the laptop and carried my cold coffee to the sink.

I wasn't ready to confront them yet.

But I was getting close.

Reborn To Swap Husbands With My Sister Novel Cover

The sensation of falling wasn't like flying; it was heavy, violent, and smelled of burning flesh. Above us, on the crumbling balcony of the Sears manor, Duke Cato Sears turned his back, shielding his cousin Bianca from the smoke as he walked away, leaving my sister Blossom and me to drop into the abyss. As the darkness slammed shut like an iron door, I realized my entire life had been a cruel script written by the people I called family. In my first life, I was the sacrificial lamb of the Dawson manor, sold to a man who eventually watched me die without blinking. My sister Blossom had pushed me into Cato's arms to avoid his rumors, only to laugh when the fire finally consumed us both. My father had measured my value like a piece of livestock, and my step-grandmother didn't even acknowledge my existence while I was being led to the slaughter. I died in that fire, feeling the heat scorch my skin and the weight of a hatred so potent it tasted like bile. I spent twenty years being the weak, manipulated shadow of a girl, only to end up as nothing more than a phantom scorch mark on a "hero's" estate. I couldn't understand why my own blood treated my life like a game they could discard. The injustice of it all burned hotter than the flames that took my last breath. Then, I sat up, sucking in air that tasted of lavender and air conditioning, not smoke. I was back in my bedroom, three days before the engagement ball that ruined my life. Blossom stood at the door, her "sweet" mask slipping as she tried to manipulate me into the Duke's path again. She thought she was the only one who had come back, but she didn't realize that this time, I was going to let her have exactly what she wanted: the Duke, the bankruptcy, and the living hell that awaited her in that house.
