Chapter 4

The door comes off its hinges with a single kick.

Not a bang. Not a crash. Just one clean, catastrophic impact—and then the reinforced steel is swinging wide and the frame is splintered and Luca Vargas is standing in the threshold.

I know his face before I know his name. I know it the way you know something from a dream—imprecise, pulled from smoke, older now but the same underneath. Six-foot-two. Black suit, no tie. One arm cradling Haisley against his shoulder like she weighs nothing, like she belongs there, her small fist curled in his collar and her eyes closed and her chest rising and falling in the slow rhythm of deep sleep.

He looks at the room. One sweep. Methodical. Bruno's hand on my shoulder. The blood pooling under my knees. Sapphire on the couch with her legs crossed and her glass raised. The guards on both walls, already moving.

His expression does not change.

He turns. He transfers Haisley—gently, with both hands, tilting her head so it rests correctly—into the arms of a woman who has appeared behind him. The woman holds my daughter like she has been briefed on exactly how to do it. She steps back into the corridor. The door to the corridor stays open.

Luca steps into the room.

The first guard reaches him in three strides. Luca sidesteps without looking at him, catches his arm, and puts him into the wall. The second comes from the left—Luca is already turning, one elbow, efficient and final. The third gets both hands up and it doesn't help. The fourth backs toward the couch and Luca follows him there and the sound he makes when he hits the floor is the last sound anyone in this room makes for a moment.

Luca steps over him.

He crosses the room. He crouches in front of me, and his hands come up under my arms, and he lifts me to my feet the way you lift something that matters. I am rigid. I am shaking so hard my teeth want to knock together and I am holding them shut. I do not know who this man is. I know who this man is. I cannot make those two things reconcile.

Then he says my name.

"Ailany."

Just that. Just my name, in a voice I have not heard in ten years, a voice that found me in the dark when I was on fire and told me to hold on.

He says it again, quieter: "I have Haisley. She's safe. You're done here."

My hands find his jacket. The lapels. I close my fingers on the fabric and I do not let go. My knees are bleeding through the thin fabric of my uniform pants and the cuts are deep and I do not let go.

He holds me up.

Then he turns toward the room.

He doesn't raise his voice. He doesn't need to. The room is very still and everyone in it is looking at him and he speaks the way a man speaks when he has nothing to prove to anyone present.

"She was six months pregnant," he says, "when you left her to burn."

Bruno is still on the floor by the karaoke console, one hand braced on the carpet. He looks up.

"She gave birth alone. A daughter." Luca's arm tightens slightly around my shoulders. "Haisley Edwards. Your biological child. Born premature. Chronic respiratory disease from smoke damage—damage she sustained before she was born, in a building your unit was called to, while you were outside deciding what was worth saving."

The silence in the room is a different kind now. Sapphire's foot has stopped swinging. Her glass is still raised but she is not drinking from it.

"Ten years," Luca continues. "Not one dollar. Not one call. Not one time you looked for either of them."

Bruno gets to his feet. Something behind his eyes has cracked open—I can see it from here, the fracture line running through whatever he has told himself about himself for the last decade. He looks toward the door. Toward the corridor where Haisley is sleeping in a stranger's arms.

He takes a step forward.

Luca moves once. One step, one kick—controlled, deliberate—and Bruno goes back into the console hard enough to bring down a rack of glasses. He stays down this time.

Luca looks at him on the floor.

"You lost the right to call yourself a father," he says, barely above a whisper, "the night you chose a cat over your wife."

Nobody in the room speaks.

Sapphire's glass is still in her hand. The little gold cat charm on her wrist catches the light and throws it back. Her face is very still—not the performed stillness, not the trembling lip and the wet eyes. Just stillness. The kind that happens when the performance subroutines fail.

I look at her.

For the first time in ten years I look at her directly and I do not look away.

My hands are still closed on Luca's jacket. My knees are bleeding. I am standing.
