Chapter 2

The name was a concussion, rattling around in her skull, leaving her momentarily deaf and blind to everything else. Killian Sinclair. Here. In her sanctuary, the one place she'd painstakingly built to escape his world. She remembered the contempt in his eyes the day he'd left her, a look that said she was an inconvenience he was finally discarding. It was the same look he was giving her now, only sharpened with a cruel, predatory amusement. This wasn't business. This was a public execution.

Her training kicked in, a lawyer's instinct for control. She turned her gaze from Killian to Caleb, her voice dropping to an icy, professional monotone. "Caleb, I am not taking this case. Please see Mr. Sinclair out."

Killian let out a soft, dry chuckle. It was a sound she knew well, a sound that always preceded a devastating verbal strike. He moved from behind the desk, his steps silent and deliberate, closing the distance between them. The familiar, expensive scent of his cologne-sandalwood and something cold, like gin-assaulted her senses.

He leaned in, his voice a low murmur meant only for her. "Three years, and you're still so naive."

His breath ghosted over her ear, and she flinched back as if burned, her entire body screaming in protest. She put a hand on the desk to steady herself, creating a physical barrier.

Caleb wrung his hands, his face a mask of desperation. "Azura, please, just listen! The SCG case... it's our only way out. The firm is on the verge of bankruptcy!"

Killian cut him off with a flick of his wrist, his gaze never leaving Azura's face. "She doesn't want to take it because she's afraid," he said, his voice returning to a normal, conversational volume that felt more menacing than a shout. "After all, what can you expect from a lawyer who got her license suspended over a family scandal?"

The jab hit its mark. A hot surge of anger propelled her words. "My abilities are not for you to judge. I simply lack the experience to handle a case of this magnitude for a conglomerate like Sinclair Consolidated Group." It was a plausible, professional excuse. A way to escape with a shred of dignity.

He seemed to have anticipated it. A faint, knowing smile touched his lips. He reached into the inner pocket of his jacket and produced a folded document, tossing it onto the desk between them. It landed with a soft, definitive slap.

"Too late," he said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Caleb has already signed the engagement letter on your behalf. If you breach the contract, your firm will be liable for twenty million dollars in damages."

Azura's head snapped toward Caleb. The blood drained from her face. "Caleb," she whispered, the name a shard of glass in her throat. "What did you do?"

Her mentor, her friend, the man who had helped her rebuild her life, couldn't meet her eyes. He stared at the floor, his shoulders slumped in defeat. "I... I had no choice, Azura. We were going under."

Killian watched her, his expression one of detached fascination, like a scientist observing a specimen's reaction to a lethal toxin. He watched the shock curdle into fury, then collapse into despair. She knew he was cataloging every flicker of pain on her face. He noticed she was thinner, he was sure of it, but her eyes held a new, feral sharpness. A cornered animal.

He twisted the knife. "Twenty million," he mused, his voice silky smooth. "That must seem like an impossible sum for you right now. Or perhaps you'll ask your family to help? Oh, that's right. They're in no position to help anyone, are they?"

Her family. The one raw, exposed nerve he knew he could always press. "You have no right to talk about my family," she snarled, her voice low and trembling with rage.

She snatched the contract off the desk, her legal mind scrambling for an escape route. "This isn't valid. It doesn't have my signature. I can have it voided."

Killian raised a single, arrogant eyebrow. He reached for the document, his fingers brushing hers as he took it. The brief contact sent a jolt of revulsion through her. He calmly flipped to the last page and pointed to a clause. Attached was a separate, notarized letter of authorization, signed by Caleb, granting Killian's legal team full power of attorney to enter into this specific contract on behalf of Azura Reed. It was ironclad. Flawless. A perfect trap.

He moved again, backing her against the edge of the desk until she had nowhere to go. He leaned over her, his body caging hers in. He lowered his head, his lips just inches from her ear, his voice a venomous whisper.

"Who do you think you are, Azura? A woman I discarded. The daughter of a bankrupt criminal. You have no power here. You have no choice. You will do as you are told."

The humiliation was absolute, a suffocating wave that stole her breath. Her entire body shook with a rage so profound it felt like it would tear her apart. The embers of a long-dormant desire for revenge flickered, then roared to life in her chest.

She thought of her father's last words to her before he was sentenced. Never, ever bow to a Sinclair.

Killian seemed to savor her fury. It was a game to him. He reached out, his fingers tracing the line of her jaw before moving to tilt her chin up. She slapped his hand away with a viciousness that surprised them both.

His eyes went dark. The playful cruelty vanished, replaced by something cold and hard. "Don't forget your place," he commanded, his voice dropping an octave. "You are my lawyer. Effective now."

Her mind was a battlefield. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to fight, to burn this contract and this office to the ground. But the number echoed in her head. Twenty million dollars. It was a mountain she couldn't climb, a weight that would crush not only her, but Caleb and the small staff who depended on the firm.

She looked at Caleb's ashamed, pleading face. She looked at Killian's triumphant, merciless one. In that moment, she understood his motive. It wasn't about the case. It was about ownership. He was putting a leash back on her, and he wanted to watch her struggle, to watch her break.

The sweet memories of their early days together, once a source of comfort, now felt like the cruelest poison. His coldness, Caleb's betrayal-it was a stark reminder that in this world, she had no one to rely on but herself.

She closed her eyes, took a ragged breath, and when she opened them again, they were as cold and empty as a winter sky.
