Chapter 3

The rage in her chest was a furnace, hot enough to melt steel. She wanted to scream, to throw the heavy law books from Caleb's shelves at Killian's perfect, arrogant face. She wanted to make him feel a fraction of the pain he had inflicted on her and her family. Three years ago, the Sinclairs had orchestrated the downfall of Reed Industries with the precision of a military strike. And she had no doubt that Killian was the general who drew up the battle plans.

She lifted her chin, a bitter, mocking smile twisting her lips. "You went to all this trouble to trap me, Killian. Is it because after three years of divorce, you still can't get me out of your head?"

His face darkened. The muscle in his jaw jumped. If there was one thing Killian Sinclair hated, it was being seen, truly seen, especially by her. "Don't flatter yourself," he shot back, his voice laced with ice. "To me, you're just a tool. One I happen to be familiar with."

"A tool for what?" she pressed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "For revenge? For humiliation? Or do you just get off on this kind of control? The same way you did with my father?"

His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. In a flash, he was in front of her, his fingers clamping around her jaw, forcing her to look at him. The pressure was just shy of painful. "I'll say this one more time," he growled, his voice a low threat. "Do not speak of your family in my presence. You've lost that right."

She fought the instinct to tremble, forcing herself to meet his furious gaze. With a surge of adrenaline, she jerked her head back, breaking his grip. "If I'm such a useless tool, why me?" she challenged, her voice steady despite the frantic beating of her heart. "New York is full of lawyers better than me."

Caleb looked like he was about to have a heart attack, watching them from the corner of the room. The air was so thick with animosity it felt hard to breathe.

Killian straightened his suit cuff, a small, deliberate movement to regain his composure. He was once again the elegant, untouchable CEO. "Because there's a certain poetry," he said, his voice chillingly calm, "in having a failure win my case for me."

He turned and walked toward the door, his dismissal of her absolute. At the threshold, he paused but didn't look back. "Be at the SCG tower tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock. Don't be late."

The door clicked shut behind him, and the immense pressure of his presence vanished. The strength drained from Azura's legs, and she sank into the nearest chair. What was his real game? This wasn't about a lawsuit. It was a twisted, pathological form of emotional retribution. He wanted to torture her.

Caleb approached her cautiously, holding out a glass of water. "Azura, I am so sorry..."

She ignored the water, her eyes hard as stone. "I'm not going," she said, her voice flat. "I'm not working for him. I'd rather die."

"Why?" Caleb asked, a note of genuine confusion in his voice. He was deliberately ignoring the personal history simmering between them. "This is the chance you've been waiting for! A chance to prove everyone wrong!"

"Did you even read the contract, Caleb?" she shot back, her anger flaring again. "Did you see the non-disclosure clauses? The penalty clauses? You didn't just sign me up for a case, you sold me into indentured servitude!"

Finally, the truth spilled out of him, laced with shame. "He paid a three-million-dollar retainer upfront, Azura. The check cleared this morning. With that money, we can pay the rent for the next two years. We can pay our staff. And... we can pay off a significant portion of the debts your father left behind."

The word "debts" struck her like a physical blow. It was the heavy, invisible chain she'd been dragging around for three years. Her resolve began to crumble.

Caleb saw his opening and pressed his advantage, his voice soft and pleading. "I know it's not fair. I know what he did to you. But I'm begging you, Azura. Help the firm. Help yourself. I've watched you for three years. I've seen you working two jobs, waitressing at night, barely eating, just to make the interest payments."

His words unlocked a flood of painful memories. The shame of being recognized by an old acquaintance while clearing tables at a diner. The gnawing hunger from days of living on nothing but cheap coffee and a single bagel.

Her resentment toward Caleb faded, replaced by a crushing anger at her own powerlessness. In the face of survival, dignity was a luxury she couldn't afford. She needed the money. She needed a way back into the game. And Killian, in the cruelest way imaginable, had just handed her both.

A war raged inside her. Cling to her pride and watch the firm-and her own fragile financial stability-implode? Or swallow this poison, walk into the lion's den, and take the chance he was offering, even if it was a trap?

In the end, it wasn't a choice. The weight of her family's name, the responsibility she felt for their ruin, tipped the scales.

She closed her eyes, a single, weary tear escaping and tracing a path down her cheek. "Send me everything you have on the SCG case," she said, her voice hollow. "Right now."

Caleb let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for an hour. "Thank you, Azura. Thank you."

She knew she had just made a deal with the devil. She had stepped onto a path with no return. She pulled out her phone and looked at the screen saver-a photo of her parents and her, smiling on a sailboat in a life that felt like it belonged to someone else. Her expression hardened into a mask of pure determination. For them, she would dance with the devil. And she would make sure she was the one leading.
