Chapter 2

A throbbing heat burned beneath my collarbone.

I woke up on a narrow, squeaking gurney pushed against the wall of the crowded observation hallway. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed with an irritating hum. Around me, monitors beeped frantically, orderlies rushed past with metal carts, and injured victims from yesterday’s explosion groaned in makeshift recovery spaces.

My left arm was tightly bound in coarse, hasty gauze that had already yellowed with antiseptic. The throbbing ache in the fractured bone made my vision swim with fever, but no nurse had checked on me since midnight.

Across the corridor, the frosted double doors of the executive VIP suite stood slightly ajar.

Inside that quiet, climate-controlled room, Nathan sat beside Chloe’s plush bed. He held a small paring knife, carving an apple with surgical precision. Chloe leaned against a mountain of down pillows, laughing softly at something he said.

On her left wrist sat a single flesh-colored band-aid.

Three dedicated private trauma nurses hovered around her bedside. One fluffed her silk blanket, another adjusted an aromatherapy diffuser on the nightstand, and the third measured her blood pressure for the fourth time in an hour. Three specialized nurses, pulled directly from emergency triage, solely to monitor a superficial scrape and mild nerves.

I pushed myself upright, swallowing the bitter dryness in my throat. Every muscle in my torso screamed in protest as I swung my legs over the edge of the gurney.

Holding my fractured arm firmly against my ribs, I took my canvas tote bag and walked toward the nurse's station to finalize my self-discharge.

"Emma?"

The suite door opened wider. Nathan stepped out into the hallway, carrying a clean ceramic bowl filled with freshly sliced fruit. His white coat was pressed and spotless. When he saw me clutching the discharge clipboard with my right hand, his brow instantly knit into a hard knot.

"What do you think you're doing?" he demanded, walking over to block my path. "You're checking yourself out?"

I didn't answer. I handed the signed release waiver to the weary receptionist.

Nathan’s jaw tightened at my silence. "Emma, look at me. Are you seriously still throwing a tantrum over yesterday?"

I turned my head and met his stare. "I'm leaving."

"You're being completely unreasonable," Nathan said, lowering his voice into a sharp, scolding hiss. "I am a cardiothoracic surgeon. In an emergency, we practice triage. Chloe’s psychological state was dangerously fragile, and shock can cause acute cardiovascular strain. Why can't you respect my professional ethics for once?"

"Professional ethics?" I asked, my voice dry and flat.

"Yes, ethics!" he snapped. "A doctor doesn't prioritize personal feelings over patient vulnerability. But instead of showing an ounce of maturity, you yelled and made a public scene. You embarrassed my mother in front of the entire surgical staff."

"She didn't just embarrass me, Nathan," a sharp voice cut in.

Eleanor walked up behind him, carrying an expensive leather handbag. Her eyes raked over my rumpled clothes, pale face, and bloodstained sling with cold disdain.

"She acted like a common hysteric," Eleanor sneered, standing beside her son. "Chloe is an executive asset who brings millions in donor relations to this facility. Emma sits at home doing nothing all day, living comfortably off your surgeon’s salary."

Eleanor crossed her arms, looking down her nose at me.

"If you think you can use your little injuries to manipulate my son and disrespect this family, think again. One more dramatic stunt like this, Emma, and I will personally instruct Nathan to freeze your monthly allowance. We'll see how proud you are when you don't have his money to buy groceries."

In the past, words like that would have crushed me. I would have choked back tears, apologized for being a burden, and worked twice as hard to keep their home immaculate.

Today, nothing stirred in my chest. No sorrow. No panic. Just a vast, cold expanse of absolute clarity.

"Keep your money, Eleanor," I said quietly.

Nathan scoffed. "Emma, stop making empty threats. You don't even have a job."

Without breaking eye contact, I unzipped the side pocket of my tote bag with my right hand. I pulled out a crisp, white document stapled inside a blue legal folder—prepared by my family's attorneys during the night.

I stepped forward and pressed the papers flat against the chest of Nathan's white coat.

"What is this?" Nathan frowned, looking down at the bold heading printed across the top page.

His eyes widened slightly as he read the title: *Proposed Marital Settlement and Separation Agreement.*

"I’ve already signed it," I said, my tone as calm as still water. "Everything is cleanly divided. I don't want the penthouse, the cars, or a single cent of your assets. During our three years of marriage, I never touched your money, and I certainly don't want it now."

Nathan stared at the black ink of my signature at the bottom of the page, his expression shifting from irritation to disbelief.

"Keep your hard-earned salary, Dr. Hayes," I added softly. "Save it to buy more band-aids for Chloe."

Eleanor sucked in a sharp breath. "How dare you speak to him like that!"

Nathan’s face darkened with sudden fury. His initial shock curdled into bruised arrogance. He crumpled the thick legal document in his fist, crushing the pages into a messy ball.

"A divorce?" Nathan let out a harsh, dry laugh, tossing the crumpled paper onto the nearby counter. "You think you're scaring me with this juvenile bluff? Signing a piece of paper is easy, Emma. But the second you step outside these doors, reality is going to hit you."

He leaned in, his eyes hard and mocking.

"Without my name and my income, you can't even afford a basement studio in New York. You have no network, no career, and nowhere to go." Nathan adjusted his lapels with cold certainty. "The hospital’s seventieth-anniversary charity gala is the day after tomorrow. When you realize what the real world looks like, you'll come crawling back on your knees. Beg me nicely, and maybe I'll still give you a family guest pass."

I looked at him for two silent seconds. It was baffling to realize I had spent three years loving a man who understood so little about who I truly was.

"I won't be begging you for anything, Nathan."

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a pair of dark sunglasses, and slipped them over my eyes.

Without another word, I turned away. I walked past the shocked nurses, past Eleanor’s furious glare, and left Nathan standing in the crowded corridor with his crumpled pride.

I pushed through the glass doors of the side exit into the cool morning air.

At the bottom of the private medical pavilion steps, a pristine, midnight-black Rolls-Royce Phantom was idling quietly by the curb.

The moment I stepped onto the pavement, the chauffeur—dressed in a crisp, tailored black suit—jumped out of the front seat. He hurried around the vehicle, bowed his head with deep reverence, and pulled open the heavy rear passenger door.

"Good morning, Miss Crawford," he said in a respectful, low tone. "The Chairman has finalized the transfer. Your medical suite and private surgical team are waiting at the downtown residence."

"Thank you, Thomas," I said.

I stepped inside the plush leather interior. The heavy door closed with a solid, airtight thud, cutting off the noise of the hospital entirely.

As the Phantom glided away from the curb, I saw Nathan and Eleanor emerge onto the hospital steps through the tinted glass, their faces pale with shock as they stared after the retreating luxury car.

I looked straight ahead, letting the city blur past the window.

The game was over. Now, the reckoning would begin.
