Chapter 3

NORA'S POV

Later that Friday morning, Julian parked his truck along the curb across from the apartment Ethan and I rented. I wore yesterday's jeans beneath Julian's shirt and my winter coat.

I reached for the door handle, but my fingers hesitated over the cold metal. "Wait outside the apartment, please. I just need to get my personal things. It won't take long."

Julian turned off the ignition and rested one arm on the steering wheel. His dark eyes studied my face for a second before he gave a quiet nod. "I'll wait by the elevator. Call if you need me."

I took a breath, climbed out of the truck, and walked up the front steps.

When I unlocked the apartment door, the sound of quiet conversation in the living room abruptly stopped.

I stepped into the foyer and froze.

Vivian, my mother-in-law, sat on the sofa with a porcelain teacup in her lap. Next to the bay window, Tessa was curled up in my favorite moss-green armchair, wrapped in my knitted throw blanket. On the side table beside her rested my handmade ceramic mug, steam curling from the herbal tea inside.

Ethan stood by the kitchen counter with an open tablet, reviewing bakery invoices as if yesterday had never happened.

They looked like a picture of quiet domestic comfort. They had already moved in, settled down, and decided how the rest of my life was going to look.

"You're finally home," Ethan said, setting his tablet down on the counter. His tone was brisk, carrying that familiar edge of impatience. "We've been waiting for hours. We need to figure out the production schedule for the catering orders."

Vivian set her cup down on the glass coffee table with a tiny clink. "Sit down, Nora. Running off in the middle of a workday was completely childish. We have practical matters to settle as a family."

I stayed by the entrance, keeping my hand flat against the strap of my empty shoulder bag. "I'm not here to settle a schedule, Ethan. I'm here to pack my clothes."

Ethan walked toward the living room, running a hand through his hair. The bruise on his jaw from Julian's fist had darkened to a dull purple.

"Don't be dramatic," Ethan said, lowering his voice to a reasonable, placating pitch. "I stayed up all night thinking about this. We can make this work if we're smart about it."

"Make what work?" I asked, my voice flat.

"Tessa is having the baby," Ethan explained, gesturing toward her as if presenting a logical business proposal. "That's a reality we have to deal with. But that doesn't mean we tear down everything we built. You keep running the kitchen and managing the recipes. Tessa will take over storefront operations, social media, and customer relations. We'll keep the revenue steady, and we can figure out the living arrangements down the line."

Tessa adjusted the blanket over her knees, offering a tight, patronizing smile. "It's the most practical route, Nora. The brand has momentum right now. Disrupting daily operations would hurt all of us."

I stared at Ethan, feeling a chilling wave of clarity. He talked about our broken marriage as though it were a scheduling problem. Apparently, keeping me in the kitchen would leave him free to build a nursery in the next room.

Vivian chimed in, her voice full of sharp authority. "Ethan made a mistake, Nora. Men do foolish things. But you don't throw away five full years of marriage over wounded pride. Think about our family standing in this town. You two built a reputable business together."

"A mistake?" I looked directly at Vivian, then back at Ethan. "He slept with another woman and brought her into my bakery to demand my signature."

"Nora, please," Ethan sighed, stepping closer. "Be sensible. Where are you going to go? What are you going to do without the shop? You love the kitchen. We're offering you stability."

"I am not signing your buyout agreement," I said, speaking every syllable with cold precision. "And I am never baking another loaf of bread for you. I am not your employee, Ethan. And I am done being the unpaid help for this family."

Tessa's smile vanished, her lips pressing into a thin line.

Ethan's eyes flashed with annoyance, but before he could argue further, I turned on my heel and walked straight down the hallway into the master bedroom.

I pulled a large canvas duffel bag from the top shelf of the closet.

I moved swiftly, pulling my clothes from the hangers: my coats, my warm sweaters, my jeans. I went to the dresser and pulled open the bottom drawer, reaching all the way to the back where I kept my metal lockbox.

Inside was my mother's hand-bound recipe journal, its leather cover worn soft at the edges. She had copied my grandmother's recipes into it before adding her own. I held it against my chest, then packed it with her smaller yellow notebook, my passport, birth certificate, and bank cards.

Underneath the lockbox lay a small white folder.

I opened it. Inside were appointment reminder cards from the fertility clinic downtown. Date after date, stamped across two grueling years. Every single card had Ethan's name crossed out in pencil because a supplier meeting or an investor lunch had taken priority.

I had sat in those sterile waiting rooms by myself, endured blood draws and ultrasounds alone, while carrying the quiet guilt that my body was failing him.

And all the while, he was giving Tessa what he claimed he was waiting to build with me.

I slid the appointment folder into the bag. Those were my records, and I wasn't leaving them for anyone else to read. I was done making excuses for him.

"You're making a terrible mistake," Vivian's voice came from the bedroom doorway.

She stood there with her arms crossed over her tailored cardigan, watching me zip the duffel bag shut.

"Ethan called Julian last night. So you stayed at his apartment?" Vivian asked, her tone dripping with disapproval. "Do you have any idea how that looks? Brothers turning against each other over you? People are going to talk, Nora. You're turning this entire family into a joke."

I picked up the duffel bag by the straps and walked toward her.

"The thing making this family a laughingstock wasn't done by me," I said, looking her dead in the eye.

Vivian flinched, stepping back just enough to let me through.

I walked down the hallway into the living room. Ethan stepped forward to block my path, reaching out to grab the bag's strap. "Nora, stop. We haven't agreed on anything yet."

"Get out of my way," I said.

He met my eyes. I held his gaze until he slowly lowered his hand.

I stopped at the refrigerator for the small jar of starter I kept as a backup, wrapped it in a clean tea towel, and tucked it upright into my shoulder bag. Then I walked out, pulling the heavy wooden door shut behind me. The latch clicked into place, severing five years of my life in a single second.

Julian stood waiting by the elevator at the end of the hall, wearing his dark leather jacket. The moment he saw me carrying the heavy canvas bag, he stepped forward and lifted the strap from my shoulder without a word.

We stepped inside the elevator together. As the doors began to slide shut, the adrenaline that had kept me standing suddenly drained from my limbs. My knees gave a slight tremble.

I reached out, burying both hands into the heavy leather of Julian's jacket, leaning into his solid frame to keep myself upright.

Julian didn't pull away. He waited until my weight settled against him before wrapping one strong arm around my back, pulling me securely against his chest. His chin rested gently against the top of my head, shielding me entirely from the open hallway.

"Nora!"

Ethan's voice echoed through the corridor as he rushed toward the elevator. "Nora, wait..."

Ethan skidded to a halt just outside the narrowing gap of the elevator doors.

He started to reach for the rubber sensor, but his hand froze in midair.

His eyes dropped from my face down to the collar of my winter coat. In my hurry, the top buttons had pulled apart, fully exposing the dark navy fabric underneath: Julian's heavy button-down shirt, noticeably oversized, resting against my bare throat.

Ethan's gaze snapped up to Julian's face, then back to my collar.

The color completely drained from Ethan's face, replaced by a sudden, ugly shock of disbelief and fury. His jaw tightened, his chest heaving as his gaze fixed on the shirt.

Before Ethan could say another word, the heavy steel doors slid shut between us with a final, resonant thud.
