Chapter 1

My husband used to save the first warm croissant for me. On our bakery’s anniversary, he saved a chair for the intern carrying his baby. She laid an ultrasound beside my cake. “You couldn’t give him a child. At least give us the bakery.” He said I could stay as their baker.

Then his younger brother walked in, saw Ethan gripping my wrist, and punched him. “Are you coming?” For once, I left the mess behind.

Now I’m sleeping down the hall from the man I used to hate, wearing his shirt and trying not to notice how carefully he keeps his hands to himself. He remembers how I take my coffee. He tells me I don’t owe him breakfast. And when I finally ask if he still wants to kiss me, he says, “I never stopped wanting to.” The guest room is starting to feel like the wrong bedroom.

NORA'S POV

I adjusted the gold topper on the five-tier honey-vanilla cake and pushed the wheeled cart toward the front display window. Beyond the glass, Boston shivered through the morning of January sixteenth.

The bell above the entrance chimed over a room packed with morning regulars, suppliers, and staff. Five years ago today, Honey & Hearth had opened with two secondhand ovens, maxed-out credit cards, and forty dollars left in our joint checking account. Today, the line stretched down the block, and the display cases were filled with recipes I had spent my entire adult life perfecting.

"Speech, Nora!" someone called from near the espresso machine.

Before I could wipe the flour from my knuckles, the crowd parted near the doorway. Tessa stepped through, her designer wool coat open over a silk blouse, her glossy hair styled to perfection. Ethan had hired her as our pastry intern the previous spring. Lately, she spent more time in his office than at a mixing bowl. She didn't offer a greeting or glance at the anniversary spread.

She walked straight to the glass case, pulled a glossy black-and-white strip from her designer handbag, and slapped it onto the marble counter right beside the cake.

It was an ultrasound scan.

"I'm pregnant with Ethan's baby," Tessa announced, her voice carrying clearly across the silent shop. "When are you moving out?"

The bakery went dead quiet. The hum of the refrigeration units sounded suddenly deafening.

I stood frozen behind the counter, staring at the faint gray curve on the photographic paper. For a split second, my brain refused to process the words. I looked past Tessa toward the register, waiting for Ethan to step out, laugh, and tell everyone it was a sick joke.

Ethan walked out from behind the counter, his face pale.

He didn't look at me. He didn't deny it.

Instead, he rushed straight to Tessa's side, pulled out one of our wooden dining chairs, and guided her into it with gentle care.

"Nora, what are you doing?" Ethan snapped at me, his tone sharp and irritated. "Don't just stand there staring. Get her a glass of ice water. You know she shouldn't be standing right now."

My voice caught in my throat. "Ethan... what did she just say?"

"You heard me," Tessa said, crossing her ankles and settling into the chair Ethan had provided. She reached into her bag again, producing a stiff manila folder, and tossed it across the marble surface. "This is a buyout and ownership transfer. Sign over your share of the bakery and agree to leave the apartment."

I looked down at the documents. The bold header at the top read *Proposed Membership Buyout and Lease Release*.

"Ethan and I need a fresh start," Tessa continued, smoothing her skirt with manicured nails. "A child needs a stable home, not a divided household. Ethan deserves a family, Nora. Let's be honest with ourselves: you've had five full years of marriage, and you couldn't even give him one."

A few customers near the door gasped, but Ethan remained silent. He didn't tell her to stop. He didn't flinch at the cruelty.

"Ethan," I whispered, my eyes burning as I stared at the man I had slept beside for half a decade. "Did you know about this?"

Ethan rubbed the back of his neck, refusing to meet my eyes directly. "Be realistic, Nora. Tessa has a degree in brand management. She can take the business to a regional level. If you transfer your interest in the LLC and cooperate with the lease changes, we won't leave you empty-handed. We'll keep you on as head baker."

I stared at him, unable to fathom what I was hearing. "You want me to work for you?"

"It's a generous offer," Ethan insisted, stepping closer to the counter, leaning in so the remaining customers wouldn't hear every detail. "You keep your salary and your kitchen. You love baking anyway. You won't have to deal with the taxes, the administrative headache, or the marketing. You get to do what you do best, and Tessa will manage the storefront."

The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow.

They didn't just want my husband or my home. They wanted the entire business I had built from nothing: my grandmother's pastry recipes, my fourteen-hour shifts, my blistered hands. And they wanted me to stay in the back room, baking the bread that would pay for their new life together.

"You're out of your mind," I said, my voice steadying under a sudden wave of cold fury.

I took the legal papers, shoved them hard across the counter, and sent them sliding right into Tessa's lap.

"I bought the first oven with my inheritance," I said, looking straight at Ethan. "I developed every single menu item. I worked eighty hours a week while you took credit at networking events. I am not signing anything, and I am not giving you my bakery."

Ethan's face flushed red with anger. He stepped around the partition, reached across the counter, and clamped his fingers tightly around my wrist.

"Stop acting crazy," Ethan hissed through clenched teeth, squeezing until my bones ached. "You're humiliating us in front of our best clients. You will sign the papers, Nora. Don't make this uglier than it has to be."

"Let go of me!" I pulled back, but his grip only tightened.

"I said let go of her, Ethan."

A deep, commanding voice cut through the tension.

Julian stood inside the front doorway, wearing his dark leather jacket and heavy work boots. He had come to pick up his standing weekly order of sourdough loaves, but his dark eyes were locked entirely on Ethan's hand wrapped around my wrist.

Ethan scowled, not releasing me. "Stay out of this, Julian. This is between me and my wife. It's family business."

"She told you to let go," Julian said, closing the distance between them in three long strides.

Ethan finally dropped my arm, turning on his younger brother with sudden aggression. He shoved Julian's shoulder. "Get the hell out of my shop!"

Julian didn't stumble. He barely moved.

Ethan drew back his fist. Julian moved first, driving a right hook into Ethan's jaw.

The crack echoed through the bakery. Ethan stumbled backward, crashing into the pastry display cart. The five-tier anniversary cake shook violently before tipping sideways, collapsing onto the tiled floor in a heap of buttercream and crushed sponge.

Tessa screamed, jumping to her feet and rushing to Ethan's side as he sprawled on the floor, clutching his bleeding mouth.

Julian didn't look down at his brother. He stepped squarely between me and the two of them, blocking them entirely from my sight. His broad frame shielded me from the stares of the whispering crowd.

He looked down at me, his gaze steady and intense. "Nora. Do you want to stay here, or are you coming with me?"

I looked past his shoulder. Ethan was glaring at me while Tessa dabbed at his lip with a linen napkin.

There was nothing left for me in this room.

I reached behind my back, untied the strings of my flour-dusted apron, and pulled it over my head. I folded it neatly and set it on the clean counter. Then I reached into my pocket, pulled out the bakery's heavy ring of master keys, and set them down with a sharp clink on top of Tessa's ultrasound scan.

"I'm not signing your buyout," I said, my voice clear enough for every witness in the room to hear. "And I'm done running this place for you."

I took my coat and shoulder bag from the staff hook. My phone, wallet, and apartment keys were still inside. Then I turned toward the side exit.

"Nora!" Ethan shouted from the floor, his voice frantic as reality set in. "Nora, get back here! What about the four o'clock bake tomorrow? We have forty dozen croissants due for the corporate catering order! Who's going to make the dough?!"

I didn't answer. I didn't even look back.

I walked out the door with Julian beside me, the morning air hitting my heated face like a shock of cold water.

Julian unlocked his heavy black truck and opened the passenger door for me. I climbed in, my knees trembling the second the door shut. The adrenaline was fading, leaving me completely drained.

Julian climbed into the driver's seat, started the engine, and pulled smoothly out of the parking lot onto the main road.

I stared straight ahead at the asphalt, my hands shaking in my lap. "I don't have anywhere to go tonight. My name is on the apartment lease, but I can't go back there."

Julian clicked the dashboard dial, turning the heater up until warm air filled the cab.

"Come to my place."
