Chapter 2

The first hint of dawn painted the Manhattan skyline in shades of lavender and gold as I stood at our bedroom window, unable to sleep after last night's humiliation. My phone still buzzed occasionally with notifications about my "husband for sale" listing—a moment of rebellion that had provided fleeting satisfaction but solved nothing. The city was waking up, but Michael hadn't come home after the party. I knew where he was. With whom he was.

I twisted my Sterling family signet ring, the weight of it suddenly unfamiliar on my finger. Eight years of marriage, and for what? To be kissed aside like yesterday's newspaper?

The soft ping of my phone interrupted my thoughts. A notification from our building management app—something about property documentation. Probably routine maintenance forms Michael handled these days. I opened it absently, then froze.

There, in sterile legal language, was a transfer of deed. My childhood townhouse—the last physical connection to my parents—was being signed over to Natalie Brooks as "business collateral."

Time seemed to suspend as I stared at the document, the timestamp showing it had been processed just twenty minutes ago. My throat constricted. The townhouse had been my sanctuary growing up, filled with memories of my parents. The Japanese maple in its rooftop garden was where my father had taught me about patience, about roots and growth.

"Business collateral," I whispered to the empty room. My family home, where generations of Sterlings had lived, now belonged to the woman my husband couldn't stop kissing at our dinner party.

I spent the day in a daze, searching our home office for any trace of paperwork related to the townhouse. In the bottom drawer of Michael's desk, buried beneath tax documents, I found it—the original deed transfer, waiting for final processing, his signature bold and confident across the bottom.

I was still holding it when Michael returned home that evening, looking refreshed and unapologetic. I'd prepared dinner—an absurd domestic gesture given the circumstances, but routine had become my anchor in the storm.

"What is this?" I asked, sliding the document across the dining table as he poured himself a glass of wine.

He barely glanced at it. "The townhouse paperwork. It's just a formality for the new expansion."

"You're giving my family home to Natalie."

"To the company," he corrected smoothly, cutting into his steak. "Natalie's name is on it as the executive handling the transaction. We discussed this months ago, Victoria."

"We absolutely did not." My voice remained steady, though my hand trembled around my water glass.

Michael set down his knife and fork, giving me that patient look I'd once found endearing. Now it seemed patronizing. "We did. In February, after the Tokyo merger. You agreed it made sense to leverage the property for the expansion."

"I would never—"

"You were distracted that night," he continued, his tone gentle but firm. "You'd had two glasses of that Cabernet you love. I'm not surprised you don't remember clearly."

I searched my memory desperately. February? The Tokyo merger? Had I agreed to this in some forgotten moment of weakness?

"This is my family home, Michael."

"It's an asset," he corrected. "One that's been sitting empty for years. This way it serves a purpose."

The confidence in his voice made me doubt myself. Had we discussed this? Was I losing my grip on reality along with my marriage?

The next morning, I returned from my therapy appointment to find the front door propped open, the hallway filled with workers carrying boxes and furniture. In the center of the chaos stood Natalie, clipboard in hand, directing traffic with practiced authority.

"What's happening?" I asked, though the answer was painfully obvious.

Natalie smiled, that same demure expression she'd worn before kissing my husband. "Just some redecorating, Victoria. Michael thought it was time for a refresh."

I pushed past her toward our bedroom—my bedroom—only to find it transformed. My antique vanity, passed down from my grandmother, was gone. The Sterling family portraits had vanished from the walls, replaced by abstract canvases splashed with bold colors. Each bore a small signature in the corner: N.B. Natalie Brooks.

My jewelry box sat open on an unfamiliar dresser, half-emptied. A worker was carefully placing my mother's pearl necklace into a storage container labeled "Donations."

"Stop!" I lunged forward, snatching the pearls from his hand. "These aren't donations. This is my bedroom."

"Actually," Natalie's voice came from behind me, honey-sweet and venomous, "Michael thought the master suite would be better utilized as a combined office and relaxation space. Your things are being moved to the guest room. Don't worry—we saved anything that seemed... valuable."

I clutched my mother's pearls to my chest, watching as strangers systematically erased every trace of my existence from the space I'd called home. On the bedside table, a framed photo now stood where mine had been—Michael and Natalie, laughing at what appeared to be a company retreat, his arm around her waist in a gesture of casual intimacy that spoke volumes.

She wasn't just taking my husband. She was taking my home, my history, my identity—piece by piece, smile by smile.

And I was letting her.
