Chapter 2

Sarah POV

I gave myself exactly two hours.

The house reeked of damp hockey gear and Mark’s neglected business files, a suffocating blend I had tolerated for over a decade. I dragged three oversized suitcases from the basement and dropped them in the center of the master bedroom.

I bypassed the section of my closet dedicated to maroon team hoodies and practical waterproof jackets. Instead, I reached for the silk blouses, the tailored blazers, and the sharp dresses I had shoved to the back after Ethan’s diagnosis. I packed the clothes of the woman I used to be.

Next, I walked to the bottom shelf of the bookcase. Before I became the unpaid team manager and full-time medical coordinator, I ran a top-tier public relations firm. I grabbed the heavy leather binder containing my core client Rolodex. The business cards of fifty high-net-worth clients went straight into the first suitcase.

I moved to the wall safe hidden behind the bedroom door. I punched in the six-digit code, pulled out the bank certificates registered solely in my name, and tossed them on top of my sweaters. It was exactly half of our liquid assets.

The first suitcase zipped shut with a sharp, metallic sound.

Carrying the bags downstairs, my socks slid quietly against the freezing hardwood. I stopped in the kitchen, dropping the handles.

I stood in front of the stainless-steel refrigerator. Taped to the center of the door was the document that kept this family functioning: the "Ethan’s Tournament Logistics and Allergen Management Schedule."

It held three pages of meticulously charted medical history. Twelve columns of data detailing peak flow meter readings, albuterol dosages, and safe restaurant chains across three states. If Ethan ate heavy dairy before a game, reflux aggravated his coughing. If he missed his evening controller medication during tournament weekends, he spent the night fighting a tight chest. The sheet was my personal shortcut, not Ethan's only medical record; his asthma action plan also lived in the pediatric portal, at school, and in Coach Miller's emergency binder.

I grabbed the top corner of the thick cardstock.

The tape tore with a loud rip. I crumpled the schedule into a tight ball and tossed it into the trash can.

At exactly midnight, the front lock tumbled.

Mark pushed the door open, bringing a gust of freezing wind and the heavy stench of brewery beer into the foyer. Ethan trailed right behind him, his face flushed with adrenaline and exhaustion.

Mark stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes darted from me to the three massive suitcases lined up by the console table. He loosened his tie, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth as he leaned heavily against the doorframe.

"You locked the business account," Mark barked, his voice echoing in the quiet hallway. "Maya tried to pay the deposit at the steakhouse and the waiter declined the card in front of the entire coaching staff."

"I reported unauthorized activity," I said, standing my ground. "She is an administrative assistant, Mark. Not a financial signatory."

"She was hosting a championship dinner!" Mark yelled, pushing off the doorframe. "You embarrassed her. You embarrassed me!"

"You let a twenty-two-year-old swipe a corporate card to buy a private dining room," I countered. "I just stopped the fraud."

Mark scoffed, waving a hand at my luggage. "And what is this? A midnight packing strike? Are we pretending to run away now?"

"Move out of the doorway, Mark," I said.

"You are acting like a child," he continued, letting out a short, mocking laugh. "You threw a massive tantrum on the ice, caused a scene, and now you want to play the victim? You really think this little stunt is going to make me apologize?"

Ethan stepped around his father. He clutched a brand-new, carbon-fiber hockey stick, the glossy finish catching the hall light.

"Maya was crying because of you," Ethan muttered, glaring at me. "But she still bought me this with her own money. She actually knows what I like."

I stared at my twelve-year-old son. "That stick is three inches too long for your height. It will ruin your posture on the ice and strain your back."

Ethan rolled his eyes, gripping the shaft tightly. He jutted his chin out, mirroring his father's exact arrogant stance. "You just hate that she bought it. It’s way better without Mom annoying me all night anyway."

Mark nodded approvingly at our son. "Go put your gear in the garage, buddy. Let me handle this."

Ethan stomped past me, purposely knocking his shoulder against my arm as he headed for the kitchen.

Mark crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at me. "I am not playing this game with you, Sarah. If you want to drag those bags out to your car to prove some ridiculous point, go ahead."

I grabbed the handle of the second suitcase and zipped it shut.

"But hear me now," Mark warned, his tone dropping into a condescending drawl. "When you come crawling back here at six in the morning to make his rehab breakfast, do not expect me to carry those bags upstairs for you. I am done catering to your manufactured drama."

I reached into my coat pocket. My fingers brushed against the cold metal of my house key, the edges worn smooth from twelve years of turning this exact lock.

I walked over to the mahogany dining table. I placed the greasy key flat in the center of the polished wood. The metal clacked loudly in the silent room.

"I will not be here at six," I said.

Mark rolled his eyes again. "Right. You'll be back by five."

"Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock," I stated, keeping my voice entirely flat. "My attorney, David Lawson, will send an email directly to your corporate inbox."

Mark frowned. His arms dropped to his sides, his posture stiffening. "What email?"

"A divorce petition," I answered. "Along with my proposed temporary parenting schedule and communication boundaries for Ethan."

The smugness drained from Mark’s face instantly. His jaw locked, his eyes darting frantically from the key on the table to the suitcases by my feet.

"You are insane," Mark snapped, though his voice lacked its previous confident boom. "You cannot just walk out over a pizza party!"

"It was never about the pizza," I said.

I grabbed the telescopic handles of my suitcases, yanking them upward. I dragged the wheels across the hardwood, walking right past him.

"His asthma action plan is in the patient portal and Coach Miller has a copy," I said, stepping onto the porch. "The refrigerator schedule was my labor. Managing the plan is yours now."

"Sarah!" Mark yelled, taking a frantic step toward the threshold. "Get back inside right now!"

I pulled the heavy oak door shut, the deadbolt snapping into place and locking them inside a house I would never clean again.
