Chapter 2

The Marcus Chen deal consumed me like a fever. For two weeks, I lived on coffee and determination, crafting the most comprehensive proposal our company had ever seen. Marcus was notorious for his impossible standards—three other firms had already failed to win his business. But I had something they didn't: desperation wrapped in professional excellence.

I called in every favor, leveraged every connection from my seven years in the industry. Late nights blurred into early mornings as I refined projections, analyzed market trends, and prepared for every possible objection. My small notebook, usually reserved for tracking Drake's broken promises, became filled with client research and strategic notes.

When Marcus finally signed the contract—a hundred million dollars over three years—I felt something I hadn't experienced in months: genuine pride untainted by the need for Drake's approval. This wasn't routine work. This was the kind of deal that changed companies.

I practically floated back to the office, the signed contracts tucked safely in my briefcase. For once, Drake would have to see me. Really see me.

He was in his office when I knocked, Jane perched on the edge of his desk like she belonged there. Her laugh tinkled through the glass door—light, educated, everything I apparently wasn't.

"Drake," I said, stepping inside without waiting for permission. "I need to speak with you."

Jane slid off the desk with practiced grace. "Oh, I should let you two discuss business. Drake was just explaining the theoretical frameworks behind market penetration strategies." She touched his shoulder briefly before gliding past me. "So fascinating how academic theory applies to real-world scenarios."

I waited until she left before placing the contracts on Drake's desk. "Marcus Chen signed. All of it. The full hundred million."

Drake's eyebrows shot up—the first genuine reaction I'd gotten from him in weeks. He flipped through the papers, his expression shifting from surprise to something that might have been admiration.

"This is... incredible, Viv. Marcus Chen never signs deals this size without months of deliberation."

"I know." I straightened my shoulders. "So about that dinner—"

"Absolutely." Drake stood, actually smiling at me. "This calls for a proper celebration. La Maison, tomorrow night. Eight o'clock."

My heart lifted for the first time in months. "Really?"

"Really." He came around the desk and, for a moment, I thought he might embrace me. Instead, he patted my shoulder like I was a valued employee. "You've earned it."

I spent the next day in a state of cautious optimism. I bought a new dress—deep blue silk that brought out my eyes—and made a reservation at the salon. For the first time in months, I felt like Drake's wife instead of his forgotten colleague.

At seven-thirty, I was ready. At eight, I was waiting by the door. At eight-fifteen, my phone buzzed.

*Can't make dinner. Emergency business conference with Jane. Important client relations. Rain check? - D*

I stared at the message until the words blurred. Emergency business conference. I opened Instagram, my fingers moving with muscle memory I wished I didn't have.

Drake's latest post was from two hours ago: a photo of him and Jane at what was clearly a luxury resort, complete with palm trees and sunset views. The caption read: "Strategic planning retreat. Sometimes the best ideas come from getting away from the office. #TeamBuilding #Innovation"

Jane had commented with a heart emoji.

I set my phone down carefully, my hands surprisingly steady. The blue dress suddenly felt like a costume for a play I was no longer auditioning for. I walked to my closet and changed into jeans and a sweater, hanging the dress in the back where I wouldn't have to look at it.

The next Monday, Jane's transformation was complete. She glided into the morning meeting with new confidence, settling into the chair that had been mine for three years—the one next to Drake at the head of the table.

"I've been thinking," she announced, her voice carrying the authority of someone who'd spent the weekend strategizing with the CEO, "about the theoretical foundations underlying our client approach."

Sarah Mitchell shot me a look across the table, her expression carefully neutral.

"Viviana's work with existing clients is certainly... practical," Jane continued, "but I wonder if we're missing opportunities for more sophisticated relationship building. My background in behavioral economics suggests we could leverage psychological frameworks to—"

"That's brilliant," Drake interrupted, leaning forward with the kind of attention he used to give me. "What do you propose?"

I watched Jane outline a strategy that was essentially my own client relationship model, repackaged with academic jargon and presented as revolutionary innovation. She spoke about "theoretical foundations" and "behavioral paradigms" while describing techniques I'd been using for years.

"Perhaps," Jane said, her eyes finding mine with calculated sweetness, "I could take point on some of Viviana's larger accounts? Bring a fresh theoretical perspective to relationships that might have become too... comfortable?"

Drake nodded enthusiastically. "Excellent idea. Viviana, you can focus on the smaller accounts while Jane handles our major clients."

My hundred-million-dollar deal—the largest in company history—and I was being demoted to "smaller accounts."

I smiled and nodded, my voice steady when I spoke. "Of course. Whatever's best for the company."

But inside, something crystalline and fragile finally shattered completely.

The illusion shattered at 2 AM when Evertt walked in smelling of Chanel No. 5-the signature scent of his mistress, Adda. Without a word of apology, he dropped divorce papers on the table, demanding I sign them immediately so he could finally be with the woman he truly loved. He looked at me with pure disgust, flicking a five-million-dollar check toward me as if he were paying off an incompetent employee. He told me it was more money than anyone from my "trailer park" background would ever see and ordered me to hurry because Adda was waiting in the car downstairs. He didn't care that I had spent years nursing him through illness and tolerating his family's insults; he only cared about his own convenience. The sheer arrogance of his payout and the blatant disrespect of bringing his mistress to our home was the final blow. I realized that the man I loved never actually saw me, only the submissive shadow I had forced myself to become. I signed the papers with a fluid scrawl he didn't bother to check, then I fed his millions into the office shredder. I pulled a hidden, encrypted device from a kitchen drawer and dialed a number I hadn't called in three years. "Brother," I said, my voice finally steady. "Come get me. The game is over." Evertt thought he was discarding a penniless nobody, but he was about to find out that he had just declared war on the Stafford empire.
