Chapter 1

The cathedral bells of St. Patrick's still echoed in my ears as I stood in the marble foyer of the Williamson estate, my wedding dress trailing behind me like spilled cream. The reception had been everything New York society expected—crystal chandeliers casting rainbow prisms across silk-draped walls, champagne flowing like golden rivers, and guests whispering their approval of the match between the Montgomery heiress and the distinguished Scott Williamson.

But now, in the sudden quiet of our new home, something felt terribly wrong.

A wave of exhaustion crashed over me, so sudden and complete that I had to grip the marble banister to keep from falling. My legs trembled beneath the weight of my gown, and a strange coldness began spreading from somewhere deep in my chest, as if winter itself had taken root in my bones.

"Mrs. Williamson?" Faith appeared at my side, her weathered hands steady as she helped support me. "You look pale, miss. Perhaps the excitement of the day—"

"I'm fine," I whispered, though the words felt like lies on my tongue. The coldness was growing stronger, creeping through my veins like ice water. "Just tired."

Scott emerged from his study, loosening his silk tie with practiced ease. His dark eyes swept over me with what I had once mistaken for passion but now seemed almost clinical. "You should rest, Winter. It's been a long day."

There was no warmth in his voice, no tender concern for his new bride. The man who had whispered sweet promises during our courtship now spoke to me as if I were a business arrangement to be managed.

Over the following weeks, the mysterious weakness only worsened. I would wake each morning feeling as though something vital was being slowly drained from my very soul. My reflection in the mirror showed hollowed cheeks and eyes that had lost their spark. Faith brought me countless remedies—warm broths, herbal teas, tonics from the finest physicians—but nothing helped.

Then came the morning that shattered what remained of my world.

I was taking breakfast in the sunroom when Faith burst through the doors, her face ashen. "Miss Winter, your father—they've come for him."

The teacup slipped from my nerveless fingers, shattering against the marble floor. "What do you mean?"

"The authorities. They're saying he stole money from his business partners. Embezzlement, they called it." Faith's voice cracked. "They have documents, miss. Evidence."

The world tilted sideways. My father, Marcus Montgomery, was the most honorable man I knew. He had built his fortune through honest work and treated every employee like family. The accusation was impossible, absurd.

I found Scott in his study, calmly reviewing correspondence as if nothing had happened. "Scott, you must help me. Father's been arrested on false charges. Surely you can speak to your connections, hire the best lawyers—"

He didn't even look up from his papers. "The evidence seems quite compelling, Winter. Perhaps it's best to let justice take its course."

His indifference hit me like a physical blow. "How can you say that? You know my father's character. This is clearly a mistake, or worse—a deliberate frame."

"Business can corrupt even good men." Scott's tone remained maddeningly neutral. "I won't risk my reputation defending someone who may well be guilty."

I stared at this stranger wearing my husband's face, searching for any trace of the man who had courted me so ardently. "He's my father, Scott. Your family now."

Finally, he raised his eyes to mine, and what I saw there chilled me more than the mysterious cold in my veins. There was no love, no compassion—only calculation. "Some battles aren't worth fighting, Winter. You'll understand eventually."

That evening, as I sat alone in our vast bedroom, Faith brought news that my father had collapsed in his cell. The shock and shame, the doctors said. Within days, he was gone, taking with him any chance to clear his name.

I wept until no tears remained, curled on the Persian carpet like a broken doll. The coldness inside me spread further, and I began to understand with growing horror that my suffering was no coincidence. Someone wanted me weak, isolated, vulnerable.

It was then that I heard voices drifting from the garden below—Scott's deep murmur and a softer, feminine response that made my blood freeze.

Rosalie.

I crept to the window, my heart hammering against my ribs. In the moonlit garden, I saw them together beneath the rose arbor. Scott cradled his stepsister against his chest with a tenderness he had never shown me, his fingers stroking her pale hair as she trembled in his arms.

"Soon, my darling," his voice carried on the night air. "Everything will be yours soon. I promise."

Rosalie lifted her face to his, and even from my window, I could see the triumph glittering in her eyes. "And Winter?"

"She's already fading. The ritual is working perfectly."

The words hit me like arrows, each one finding its mark in my breaking heart. Ritual. My mysterious illness, my father's convenient death, Scott's calculated cruelty—it was all connected, all planned.

I sank to my knees on the cold floor, finally understanding the true nature of my gilded cage.
