Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, but I didn't know it yet.

I was in the pack medical wing, hands blood-soaked up to the wrists, when the border-road report reached me. The words came through the mind-link in fragments—rogue attack, torn femoral artery, crushed ribs—and then the healer's voice cut through, sharp and clinical: "Only an Alpha-blood transfusion from a direct parent can stabilize her long enough for wolfsbane-extract treatment to begin."

Lily. Five years old. On a surgical table.

I pulled Silas through the mate bond with everything I had. The tug was desperate, raw, the kind of call that should have brought him running. I felt the bond stretch taut between us, felt the moment he registered the urgency—and then felt him slow his pace deliberately, like a man deciding whether to answer a phone.

When he finally arrived at the medical wing, I was standing outside the observation window, watching the healer work. Lily's small body was open on the table, ribs spread, the surgical lights making her skin look translucent. Her wolf hadn't awakened yet. She had no accelerated healing. She was just a child, bleeding.

Silas stopped beside me. He didn't touch me. He looked through the glass for three seconds, maybe four, and then he said, "No."

I turned to him. "What?"

"I can't." His voice was flat. "Owen documented a silver-taint in her bloodline. Contact with her blood would poison an Alpha."

I stared at him. "That's not—Silas, she's your daughter. Your blood can save her."

"I said no."

The healer was calling for the transfusion setup. Lily's heart rate was dropping on the monitor. I could see it from where I stood—the green line flattening into something too slow, too shallow.

"Please." The word came out broken. "Please, just—"

Silas's eyes went cold. His Alpha tone dropped into the space between us like a stone into water, threading directly down the mate bond and locking around my throat. "Do not ask me again."

The compulsion hit me like a fist. My mouth opened. Nothing came out. I tried to push past it, tried to force the words up through the biological cage he'd just built inside me, but my wolf whimpered and curled in on herself and I couldn't—I couldn't speak.

Silas turned and walked away.

I stood there, hands still red, throat closed, watching through the glass as the healer worked alone. They opened Lily again. They stitched her again. They stabilized her pulse with emergency measures I didn't understand, and I pressed my palm against the observation window and counted her heartbeats through the surgical-bay glass until the rhythm steadied to something survivable.

She didn't wake that night.

I sat beside her bed in the recovery wing, holding her hand, feeling the faint warmth of her pulse under my thumb. Her hair was matted with dried blood. Someone had cleaned her face, but they'd missed a spot near her temple. I wiped it away with the edge of my sleeve.

Silas didn't come.

I pulled at the bond twice more—gently, testing—and felt nothing back. He'd severed the mind-link. Not permanently, just enough to stop hearing me.

When Lily's breathing evened out and the healer told me she was stable, I left the recovery wing and walked to the pack archive. It was late. The hallways were empty. My hands were still shaking.

I requested Lily's full bloodwork files.

The archive attendant—a young Delta named Carla—looked at me for a long moment, then nodded and pulled the records. She handed them over without comment, but her eyes lingered on my face. I wondered what she saw there.

I took the files to an empty records room and spread them across the table.

Two panels. Same blood sample. Filed eleven days apart.

The first panel was flagged with a detailed silver-taint finding: elevated reactivity to Alpha-dominant blood proteins, documented cellular degradation upon contact, a full page of medical terminology I had to read three times to understand. The second panel recorded the same sample as entirely unremarkable. Clean. Normal. No abnormalities detected.

I stared at the documents for a long time.

Then I pulled out my phone and photographed both panels. I copied them into a personal folder I didn't previously have reason to keep. I filed the originals back exactly where I'd found them.

I said nothing to anyone.

My wolf stirred faintly—the first real movement in years, a low growl that started somewhere deep in my chest and then stopped abruptly, choked off by the residual weight of the Alpha-tone command still sitting in my throat like a stone.

I walked back to the recovery wing. Lily was still asleep. I sat beside her bed and watched her breathe.

Silas's scent was nowhere in the room.

I looked down at my phone, at the photographs I'd taken, and something behind my ribs went very cold and very still.

I didn't know what I was going to do with them yet.

But I knew I wasn't going to forget.
