Chapter 1

It was our fifth wedding anniversary.

I drove to the rooftop of The Standard Hotel with a manila envelope on the passenger seat. The October wind was sharp, cutting straight through my coat as I stepped out onto the terrace.

Music thumped from the speakers. Sparklers hissed against the dark Manhattan skyline.

Rhett stood by the glass railing. He wore a charcoal suit that fit him like armor. He looked rich, polished, and completely untouchable. Beside him was Milani Fisher. She held a sparkler in one hand and laughed at something he said. She wore a cream silk dress, backless and draped at the neck. It was the exact cut I used to wear for recitals at Lincoln Center. She looked like a copy of me from five years ago, just younger and hungrier.

I walked over. The heels of my boots clicked against the decking.

Rhett turned first. His smile didn’t drop. It just turned cold.

"Lorelei," he said. He didn't look surprised.

I laid the envelope on the cocktail table between two champagne flutes. "Sign it, Rhett."

He didn’t look down at the papers. He took a sip from his glass. "You drove all the way downtown for this? On our anniversary?"

"Three years separated is enough," I said quietly. "Sign them and let it end."

Rhett chuckled. The sound was low and mean. "You’re never getting my signature, Lori. You know that. Letting you walk away means letting you think you won." He stepped closer, his voice dropping so only I could hear. "You gave me this life. You don't get to take it back."

Milani slid her arm through his. She tilted her head, looking at me with big, innocent eyes. Her smile was sweet, coated in pure pity. It landed like a slap across the face.

"It really is a lovely night, Lorelei," Milani murmured. "You should enjoy the view on your way out."

I didn’t answer her. I didn’t give them the satisfaction of a scene. I turned around and walked away.

The elevator was empty on the ride down. As the doors shut, a tremor went through my body. I pressed my left hand flat against the cold metal wall. The ring finger stayed stiff, crooked from the nerve damage after the crash that killed my mother. I pressed harder, using the pain to keep my knees from buckling, and held it there until the lobby chimed.

Outside, I got into my car and locked the doors.

A sharp cramp twisted through my gut. My chest hitched. I grabbed a napkin from the glove compartment and coughed into it.

When I pulled it back, dark red stained the paper.

My stomach burned like hot coals. Stage IV. It was moving faster now. I folded the napkin carefully into a tiny square, slipped it into the bottom of my purse, and started the engine.

I drove straight to Mount Sinai.

It was my fourth round of chemotherapy. I took the service elevator up to the private oncology wing. The room was quiet, dim, and smelled of antiseptic. The nurses knew not to ask questions. The bills never went through my insurance. They vanished into an anonymized trust fund in Boston.

Dallas had set it up months ago. He never mentioned it to me. I never brought it up to him. It was the way we survived each other’s silence.

I sat in the chair, watching the clear fluid drip slowly down the plastic tube and into my vein.

That night, my phone buzzed on the nightstand.

I picked it up. "Hello, Dallas."

"Hey," his voice came through, steady and deep. "Are you home?"

"I'm in bed."

"How are you holding up?"

"Managing," I said.

A quiet pause stretched over the line. Dallas knew what "managing" meant. He had seen the medical charts before I even agreed to look at them. But he didn't push. He never pushed.

"The legal team finished tracing the Hargrove fund transfers," Dallas said, shifting into business. "Every single document Conrad Hale signed leads straight back to Williamson seed capital. Rhett used your family's collateral to float his entire tech acquisition. We have enough."

I looked at the ceiling. The room was dark, save for the streetlights outside my window.

"We have enough to take it all back," Dallas added softly.

"Then we start building the exit," I said.

Neither of us mentioned the clock ticking in my abdomen. We didn't have to.

Three days later, I met my team.

We didn't use the family firm's offices on Park Avenue. Rhett had private investigators watching those doors. Instead, Dallas rented a plain conference room in a nondescript corporate building in Midtown.

I sat at the head of the glass table. Across from me sat Marcus Vance, my mother’s lifelong estate attorney, and a corporate strategist Dallas had flown in from Chicago.

I laid out the files. I was wearing an oversized wool sweater to hide the fifteen pounds I had lost since August. My skin looked pale under the fluorescent lights, but my voice didn't waver.

"My mother set up a legal firewall around the core trust before she died," I told Marcus, sliding a leather-bound folder toward him. "Rhett thinks he bypassed it through our joint accounts. He didn't. Every transfer Conrad Hale executed is legally voidable under the fraud clause."

Marcus adjusted his glasses, scanning the pages. "If we file this, his credit lines freeze within twenty-four hours. His lenders will call every note."

"Not yet," I said. "We don't file until the divorce papers are signed. We prepare the trap. We draft every injunction. The second his name is on that line, we close the door."

For two hours, we went over every bank account, every shell company, and every forged signature. I didn't cough once. I kept my back straight.

Under the table, hidden from view, I pressed my scarred left hand into my thigh, squeezing until my knuckles went white, anchoring myself to the earth.
