Chapter 4

I woke up in a room that smelled like bleach and something metallic I didn't want to name.

The ceiling was white. Acoustic tiles with tiny holes. I counted them. Twelve across. Eight down. Ninety-six total.

There was an IV in my left arm. A monitor beeping somewhere to my right. A blanket tucked too tight around my legs.

I didn't move.

A nurse came in. Middle-aged. Kind eyes. She checked the monitor. Adjusted the IV drip. Leaned over me with a practiced smile.

"How are you feeling, honey?"

I didn't answer. I kept counting tiles.

She waited. Then she touched my shoulder gently. "I'm going to get the doctor. You just rest."

She left.

I stared at the ceiling. Ninety-six tiles. I started counting again from the beginning.

The doctor came in an hour later. Or maybe two hours. Time felt strange. He was young. Tired-looking. He stood at the foot of the bed and spoke in the careful voice people use when they're delivering bad news they've delivered before.

"Mrs. Hoffman, I'm very sorry. We did everything we could, but the trauma to your lower back caused significant internal complications. We weren't able to save the pregnancy."

I blinked. Once.

He kept talking. Something about monitoring. Something about follow-up appointments. Something about grief counseling resources.

I didn't hear most of it.

When he finished, he waited. I think he wanted me to cry. Or ask questions. Or do something.

I turned my head toward the window. The blinds were half-open. Gray sky outside.

He left.

The nurse came back twice that afternoon. She brought water I didn't drink. She asked if I wanted to call anyone. I shook my head. She made a note on her clipboard and left again.

I heard her talking to someone in the hallway. Her voice was low, but I caught fragments.

"Non-responsive to emotional support. Alert but non-communicative. Appears to be in controlled dissociation."

I closed my eyes. Opened them. The tiles were still there.

Camden didn't come.

---

The second day, I was still in the room.

They'd moved me out of the recovery wing into a standard patient room. Pale green walls. A single chair by the window. The IV was still in my arm, but the monitor was gone.

I was sitting up when she walked in.

Meilani Castro.

She stood in the doorway for a moment, like she was waiting for permission. Then she stepped inside. She was wearing a cream-colored sweater. Dark jeans. The bracelet caught the fluorescent light.

She closed the door behind her.

"Alaya," she said. Her voice was soft. Measured. "I hope it's okay that I came."

I didn't answer. I just looked at her.

She walked to the foot of the bed. Folded her hands in front of her. She looked composed. Sympathetic. Like she'd practiced this.

"I wanted to talk to you," she said. "I think we should be honest with each other. No more pretending."

I still didn't speak.

She took a breath. "Camden told me everything. About the marriage. About how things have been for a long time." She paused. "He said the pregnancy felt like a trap. That he didn't know how to tell you he'd already moved on emotionally."

I watched her mouth move. The words came out smooth. Rehearsed.

"I'm not here to be cruel," she continued. "I just think you deserve to know the truth. He's been unhappy for years. You both have. Maybe this—" She gestured vaguely toward the bed. Toward me. "Maybe this is the clarity you both needed."

She tilted her head. The bracelet slid down her wrist.

"At least now you both have clarity," she said.

I looked at her. Really looked. At the careful tilt of her head. At the faint curve of her mouth. At the way she stood just far enough back to feel safe.

She shifted her weight. "I'm sorry about the baby."

The smile that followed was small. Controlled. And unmistakable.

I reached for my phone on the bedside table. My hand was steady. I unlocked it. Opened the notes app. Started typing.

Meilani watched. Her smile faltered.

I typed the date. The time. Her name. Every word she'd just said. The bracelet. The sweater. The way she'd smiled when she said *sorry*.

I saved it.

Meilani took a step back. "What are you doing?"

I didn't answer. I just kept looking at her.

She waited. The silence stretched. Her composure cracked at the edges.

"I should go," she said.

She turned. Walked to the door. Opened it.

She looked back once. I was still watching her.

She left.

I locked my phone. Set it down on the blanket.

Then I lay back against the pillows. Closed my eyes.

And I felt something inside me that had been broken and bleeding begin to harden into something cold and sharp and absolutely unbreakable.
