While I Carried His Pup, My Mate Chased Her Novel Cover

While I Carried His Pup, My Mate Chased Her

At exactly 10:14 PM during the festive Pack Banquet, my world fractured. The sacred mark on my neck turned freezing and hollow, leaving an agonizing void I couldn't comprehend. Looking up, I saw Ava Evans standing at the entrance in a striking, blood-red dress. She released a sweet, intoxicating floral scent designed to captivate everyone in the room—and it was aimed directly at my mate. While I carried his unborn pup, he chose to chase her instead, igniting a tale of betrayal and forbidden paths.

Chapter 5

I walked to Colt's office at midday.

The pack house corridors were busy. Warriors passing to the training grounds. She-wolves carrying linens toward the guest quarters. No one stopped me. No one asked where I was going. I was still Luna. For now.

I pushed open the door to the pack law archives without knocking. The room smelled like old paper and dust. Rows of leather-bound volumes lined the walls—centuries of pack law, mate bond precedent, sacred accords no Alpha had challenged in generations.

I found the bond-severance petition in the third volume from the left. Standard form. Two pages. Blank signature lines at the bottom.

I pulled it free, folded it once, and walked out.

Colt's office was at the end of the hall. His door was open. He sat behind his desk, reviewing border patrol reports. He looked up when I entered.

"Sophia," he said. His voice was careful. "I was going to come find you—"

I walked to the desk and slammed the petition down in front of him.

The sound was sharp. Final. He flinched.

I looked at him. My voice came out low and unhurried.

"Speak the rejection vow," I said. "Or I petition the Lycan Council myself. You have twenty-four hours."

His face went white. Then red. He stood.

"Sophia, you can't—"

"I can," I said. "The Sacred Mate Accord is very clear. A pregnant Luna retains the right to petition directly. No countersignature required."

He stared at me. His mouth opened. Closed.

"The pup," he said finally. "Pack law binds us through the child. You can't sever—"

"You severed it the moment your canines touched her neck," I said. "Sign the form or don't. Either way, this bond ends."

I turned toward the door.

His Alpha aura slammed into the room.

It was a wave of dominance—thick, oppressive, designed to drop a wolf to their knees and force submission through sheer hierarchical weight. Every wolf in Nightveil had felt it at some point. Most couldn't stand under it.

I stopped walking. I did not kneel.

I turned back to face him.

His eyes were wide. Gold bled through the edges—his wolf surfacing, confused, because the aura should have worked. It always worked.

I met his gaze without flinching.

"You cannot command," I said quietly, "what you already abandoned."

The aura wavered. Fractured. He took a step back.

I walked out of his office and closed the door behind me.

---

I went back to the Luna's quarters and began to pack.

One bag. That was all I needed.

I laid it open on the bed and filled it with the only things that mattered: the inoculation journal, five years of healer records I had kept independently, the legal correspondence from the Lycan Court. I added a change of clothes. My identification documents. The cash I had saved from my personal stipend.

I left the jewelry box on the dresser. I left the gowns in the closet. I left the framed photograph of our mating ceremony on the nightstand—Colt's hand on my waist, my smile genuine, both of us pretending we had chosen each other.

I took nothing that suggested I had ever tried to make this place a home.

Because I hadn't. Not really. I had tried to make myself useful. I had tried to earn what should have been given freely.

I zipped the bag closed and set it by the door.

Then I sat at the desk and opened the journal one last time.

I wrote the date. The time. What I had said in Colt's office. What he had tried to do with his Alpha aura. What had happened instead.

I turned to the page with the Lycan Court's letter and read it again.

*Any formal petition may be filed directly with his office.*

I closed the journal. Placed it in the bag.

Then I sat in the chair by the window and waited.

---

Colt came that night.

I heard his footsteps in the corridor before he knocked. Heavy. Uneven. He had been drinking.

He opened the door without waiting for permission.

He stood in the doorway, his shirt half-unbuttoned, his hair disheveled. His eyes were bloodshot. He looked at me, then at the packed bag by the door.

"You're not leaving," he said.

I didn't answer.

He stepped into the room. Closed the door behind him.

"The pup binds us," he said. His voice was rough. Desperate. "Pack law—"

"Pack law," I interrupted, "does not supersede the Sacred Mate Accord. You know that. You've always known that."

"Sophia." He crossed the room toward me. His hands were shaking. "I made a mistake. I know that. But we can fix this. For the pup. For the pack."

I looked at him.

"You didn't make a mistake," I said quietly. "You made a choice. You've been making it for days."

He reached for me. His hand closed around my wrist.

Not hard. Not violent. Just desperate.

I looked down at his hand. Then up at his face.

I said nothing.

The silence stretched. It filled the room like water rising. It pressed against his chest, his throat, until he couldn't breathe under the weight of it.

He released my wrist.

He took a step back.

"Please," he said. His voice cracked. "Don't do this."

I still said nothing.

He stared at me for another long moment. Then he turned and walked out.

The door closed behind him.

I sat in the chair and pressed my fingers to the mark on my neck.

Still cold. Ice-cold now. The bond was a hollow channel transmitting nothing but static and the distant echo of his wolf howling for someone else.

I did not sleep.

---

Before dawn, I picked up the bag and walked out of the Luna's quarters.

The pack house was silent. No one saw me leave.

Outside, the sky was black and the rain was freezing. It soaked through my jacket within seconds. My breath misted in the air.

I walked toward Nightveil's border.

The road was empty. The trees on either side were skeletal, their branches clawing at the sky. My boots crunched on gravel. The rain drummed against my shoulders.

I reached the border marker—a stone post with Nightveil's insignia carved into the face.

Beyond it, the road continued into neutral territory.

I stopped.

There was a vehicle idling in the dark. Black SUV. Lycan Crown insignia on the door, subtle but unmistakable.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

Tall. Dark coat. His posture was controlled, his movements deliberate. He stood in the rain without flinching, his eyes fixed on me.

Even from a distance, I felt it.

The pull.

Not through the bond—that channel was dead. This was something else. Something older. My skin prickled. My breath caught.

He walked toward me. Stopped three feet away.

His scent hit me.

Dark cedar. Cold iron. Something underneath that I couldn't name but my body recognized anyway.

Home.

The word came unbidden. Impossible. I had never had a home.

His eyes were gray. Steady. Unreadable.

"Sophia Voss," he said. His voice was low. Certain. "Luna of Nightveil."

I didn't ask how he knew my name.

"Not for much longer," I said.

His gaze dropped briefly to the bag over my shoulder. Then back to my face.

"I'm Travis Kensington," he said. "Lycan Crown envoy. I'm conducting a sacred law audit in this region."

I nodded once.

He studied me for a long moment. His wolf was close to the surface—I could see it in the faint gold bleeding through the gray of his eyes.

"I can offer you shelter," he said finally. "The Lycan Court maintains an estate nearby. You'd be under Crown protection."

"Why?" I asked.

His jaw tightened. He looked at me like he was deciding how much to say.

"Because my wolf won't let you walk past," he said quietly. "And I don't ignore my wolf."

I looked at him. At the Crown insignia on the SUV. At the lights of the estate visible through the trees beyond the border.

I thought of Colt's hand on my wrist. Ava's triumph. The cold mark on my neck.

I thought of the journal in my bag and the evidence it contained.

"I have my own terms," I said.

Travis Kensington's mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile.

"Name them."

I walked toward the SUV.

He opened the door.

I got in.

The door closed. The engine purred to life. Through the rain-streaked window, I watched Nightveil's border marker disappear into the dark.

Travis slid into the driver's seat. He didn't start driving immediately. He turned toward me, his hand resting on the wheel.

"You're carrying a pup," he said. It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

"And the father?"

"Is about to lose everything," I said.

His eyes held mine. Then he nodded once and shifted the car into drive.

We pulled away from the border.

I pressed my fingers to the mark on my neck one last time.

Still cold.

But the pull toward the man in the driver's seat—the pull I couldn't name and didn't understand—was warm.
